"I heard him mention interest in kendo club." answered Michiko. "He's also quite fond of Shakespeare...but you didn't hear that from me. He'd never forgive me if word got out."

Michiko sighed. "I've been worrying about him even more ever since people started talking about magic users roaming the city. I know it's just me being paranoid, but I can't help but wonder things like 'what if he gets into a fight with one of them' or 'what if he's one of them'?"

"Kendo club? That fucking punk."

Takashi felt a little surge of anger bubble up. Damned kid just had to chose kendo. Just had to. he sighed, shaking his head. "Shakespeare, huh? He's just a playwright. Nothing to be ashamed of reading." He left the last barb of his thought out. Unless Shakespeare means "pornography" in this modern day and age.

"So, tell me what would happen if he was a magic user, hm? Would it make him any less of a human being?" Takashi said, cocking an eyebrow. He fucking hated ethics, but this was a valid point.

"No...I just wish people would stop talking about them, that's all. They're still human beings right...but why do you ask?" replied Michiko.

"It was rhetorical. Not like it would be particularly bad for Shinta if he was. If you really want to know, then ask the man himself. Not that it would change much," Takashi shook him head. "He's doing a damn fine job of getting himself into trouble even when you drop the magic out of the equation. I understand that he'd get into deep shit if he got tangled up in the witch-hunts, but you would be the first to know if he got himself into a fix, right?"

"I wish that were true." sighed Michiko. "Usually he brute-forces his way through his problems...it's worked so far, but I'm worried that one day he'll go off and fight out of his problems but won't come back, and I'm afraid of that more than anything else..."

"I'll bet," Takashi said, nodding gravely. He didn't like to think that the boy was hopeless, but he certainly wasn't doing a very good job of wising up. "So. How the hell to change him? I hesitate to support him in getting into any martial arts. As much time as it would eat up, it'll only serve as a distraction. It wouldn't teach him to stop dicking around. All it would do is teach him the formalities of being violent."

"...I'm not sure..." replied Michiko. "He's just angry all the time. I guess he's just upset with his father." The word 'father' was spoken with a hint of bitterness behind it.

Daddy issues. Purebred Nagashima history. No surprise. "Well, if he's got that resentment, then he'd better find a better outlet for it and quick. I have no doubts that the environment in this town is going to get even worse now that the shit has hit the fan. I'm sure he has issues; every person in this goddamned town has been in an orphanage, lost a parent, seen their parents or friends killed, been slighted by criminals, or whatever. Being here means that you've seen serious shit. I don't see why they never just fence off the city. Call it quarantined.

"My point is that effective right now, my patience has run out. I can yell all I want, but it won't change Shinta's mind or anything. I know that you've been trying, and this would be so fucking easier if the little shit were here in person right now, since he's the one who fucking needs to hear this, but I want to see reform. Immediately. He and his pals... I don't want to see or hear any mention of the Stampede from here on out. They can hang out for all I care- I can't fucking stop them from hanging out- But his role as their 'gang leader' needs to go."

"Yeah, my coworkers have called this town the Sodom-and-Gomorrah of the modern world." replied Michiko with a wry grin.

"I wish I could get him to reform...but I work two jobs and I'm rarely home, and when I am, I have to get as much sleep as I possibly can just to go back to work..." Michiko laughed bitterly. "Oh, yeah, I totally qualify for parent of the year..."

"It's what we have to deal with in urban Japan. Just have a talk with him. Have fifty if that's what it takes," Takashi spoke as he pulled out a blank sheet of paper and began to write on it in pen. He folded the sheet and placed it into an envelope. After sealing it, he wrote Shinta's name on the front and handed it to Michiko. "Your certificate. For parent of the year. Hand it straight to Shinta."
