"It does seem like that's all there is left, Ryoichi-kun."
Hibiki nodded back at Ryoichi.

Then Noriko snapped. Apparently the idea of something like 'magic' really set the girl off. Hibiki raised his eyebrows as she continued. Did she just not have a childhood or something? At some point or another everyone believed in magic, aliens, or something equally as outlandish. In Hibiki's case, he'd just recently started believing in magic again. After all, when faced with such recent impossibilities, the prospect of of magic people didn't seem terribly implausible.

"Of course, you're not incorrect." Hibiki began. "When you think about it though, isn't all of history itself just well founded rumors? It's all a giant game of telephone. Different biases and lies shaped generations of people and we're no different. Whoever controlled those rumors controlled the future."

He chuckled. "We're told the impossible is impossible by our elders. But really, can you prove that so many events in history weren't the works of the impossible? We weren't there. We'll probably never know. But if you can't disprove it either, there's always the possibility."

With a smile, he continued. "Though a logical answer to all this would be a bit more comforting at least. We'll just have to keep looking either way."

I'm the best! I'm the king of me! I'm gonna eat chips out of the garbage!

Ryoichi flinched away as Noriko began to unload on him and Hibiki. He wished that he could have expected a different response, but he didn't. She was a realist to a fault, and the true explanation just wouldn't sit with her in this case. It was just too unrealistic.

He began to speak in calm, even tones. "Kaerunuma-san told me once that everything, from physics to magic, has rules. Even demons and fairies and magic pixies are constrained by them."

He took a deep breath. "You made an example about an axe killer. But if it was magic pixies who killed his victim, they either had to trick the camera or take that man's form. Or maybe he was possessed. But if they didn't leave evidence that it was them, then the man was probably responsible."

He made vague handmotions. "That's the key part. If the impossible is involved, there has to be evidence of something impossible. And even then, the impossible can be persecuted. It doesn't break down anything."

He swallowed nervously, and said his next words quickly. "That's... That's what I think anyways."

"...History written by the victors, in a way." Noriko conceded to Hibiki, clearly a little distressed that she couldn't debunk his point. If she was unable to distinguish between the impossible and the possible, how was she supposed to find the truth? She did her best to give a smile in return to the one he gave her despite her discomfort. He was only trying to help by showing her the possibility existed.

The mystery-obsessed teen faintly registered Ryoichi had started speaking again, and perked up to give him her undivided attention. Small details she'd heard about 'Kaerunuma-san' from second hand sources came to mind and were bluntly ignored for the time being as the boy made his point.

It was actually something she hadn't considered before. She had always seen magic- 'actual' magic, not the stage magic she had taken up as a hobby- as anything that ignored the rules. If it could be quantified, it was just science, after all. If there were rules to whatever 'magic' was involved, that obviously meant there would be evidence left behind in its use, just like fingerprints on a gun... or craters without any debris, and patches of ice formed over a warm night.

The job of a detective isn't to say 'that's impossible', it's to say 'this is what happened'. "...I think I see your points." She nodded to the boys. "If, and I mean IF," she quickly added, not quite ready to resort to magic as an explanation even if she had conceded the possibility, "there is magic involved, there should be some sort of way to identify it, and then find the culprit through what they left behind." Noriko bit her lip. "If whatever it is has rules, then it's just a different type of science, kind of. Right?"

The teen shot them both a smile, this one genuine. "Thanks. I think I needed to get that off my chest, and you guys helped a lot." Noriko rocked on her feet, embarrassed about her outburst. "If there's something I can do for either of you, just let me know."

"But what if the evidence of magic is the lack of evidence at all?" Hibiki said with a grin. All of this was probably giving Noriko a headache. Ryoichi's comments continued to impress Hibiki though; wasn't this kid supposed to be the moron that forgot everything? Since when was he into deductive reasoning?

"It'll work out." He finally shrugged, looking back at the two of them. "Things usually work out for those deserving of it."

He wore a wide smile. "And I dunno Noriko-san, being graced by your presence is nice enough on its own."

"It wasn't a problem at all," Ryoichi said. He bowed slightly to Noriko. He was glad that he could help her figure things out a bit better. He honestly hoped that she didn't find out that it was "magic people", though. She seemed like one of the types who wouldn't react well to it.

"Um... about that help..." He dug into his pocket and pulled out a worn schedule. "I need to get to this class after lunch, but I forgot where it was. Could you help me get there?" He seemed quite flustered by this, and bowed deeply as he held his schedule out to Noriko.

"I-I'm sorry!" he said unnecessarily.

Noriko's mood dropped at Hibiki's comment, just for the faintest instant. She kicked at his nearest shin and brightened immediately after. "Again, though, thanks," the blond nodded, faintly embarrassed by the flirt. Her hands gingerly massaged her temples to kill the oncoming headache before it could take root. The whole event and the questions she was left with were weighing heavily on her thoughts when Ryoichi's timid voice broke through her concentration.

"Ah..." She turned and watched as the boy retrieved his schedule. He... forgot? Deciding not to ask, she took a quick glance at the worn slip of paper and blinked. "Oh! I didn't even recognize- I mean..." Flushing, she returned the bow. "It... appears we're classmates. Aha..." How did she not recognize him?! It wasn't like rumors about the infamous 'Ryotrio' had escaped her notice. They'd even exchanged names!

Well, it HAS been a hectic hour, and he's not really acting like the forgetful guy I remember. She forced the red from her cheeks through sheer will and grinned bashfully. "Sorry for not recognizing you earlier; I'll gladly lead you to class. If you need any help with your schedule in the future, don't hesitate to ask."

"Ow... Hibiki mumbled, rubbing his now sore shin. "Detectives are scary."

But this Ryoichi kid forgot where his class was? It seemed kind of sketchy. Wasn't this kid just acting like a detective himself just a few minutes ago? Maybe that was just a rare burst of intelligence. It didn't particularly matter though. Hopefully they wouldn't run into each other again.

Hopefully. Hibiki was starting to get a sinking feeling that that wouldn't be the case.

"Haha, good luck you two." Hibiki grinned. "Bye, bye."
