Noriko grimaced, writing down Yuzuki's testimony. There went the most probable theory. "I... see." In retrospect, her research into the helicopter should have told her it wasn't possible- the kamov line was focused on small but speedy helicopters. Since there weren't any available rooftops nearby, and no witnesses reported seeing anything of the like on the ground... "Ugh." Noriko rubbed her temples. There was the migraine. No matter where she looked there was a dead end. Taking a moment to collect herself, she looked up to Yuzuki. "Do you know what caused those explosions, Yuzuki-chan?" The words left a sour taste in her mouth. She felt like she was cheating, like skipping to the last chapter of a mystery book to find out how it ends. "I..." She quickly interjected as if to take the question back, only to stop herself. This wasn't a game- people were dead. Finding out the exact details could help prevent it from happening again, or at least afford those who lost loved ones some closure. "I've heard a lot of rumors about monsters being at the park. Did you see anything like that?" Now she felt flat out ridiculous. "I'm trying to figure out what people saw that started that bit of gossip." |

"Of course I know what caused the explosions, Detective-chan," Yuzuki nodded. She broke out into a grin afterwards. "But what would be the fun in that?" She wheeled around a pointed a finger dramatically at her as she put one hand on the bill of her hat. "Your role is detective! Your objective is to find the truth hardboiled! You won't be cheating on my watch!" She took off her hat and tossed it with a flick of the wrist. if it landed where she aimed it, it would fall neatly onto Noriko's head, albeit at an angle. "Nori-chan, I can tell that you didn't want to ask that question. For you, it must be the same as being defeated. So take it back! From today onward, as the President of the Student Body, I ordain you to be the Prime Investigator for this mystery of Ruwashi Park! It will be your duty to figure this knowledge on your own!" With that, she finally sat back down in her seat. "The hat is your badge of office. Feel free to return it whenever you figure everything out~!" She kicked back into the swivel chair, causing her to turn in a circle. By the time that she was able to make the rotation, her smile was much more subdued. "But to get back to business, I will tell you that the cause of the entire incident is not something that I am willing to freely divulge. I'm guessing that Rio-chan was a bit hesitant to give you information too. I'll be open to questioning and I don't plan on lying, but there will be some information that you'll have to pry for. "With regards to the issue about the monsters... Well, I wonder what sort of logical explanation there is for those rumors? Certainly not mass hallucinations. I'll tell you that I've seen the alleged monsters in the park. But I will also say that they are very much human. Or seem to be, at the least." |

"Wha...?" Noriko stared as Yuzuki called her out for 'cheating', only jerking out of it when the girl's hat landed on her head. She faintly registered how cozy it was as she gingerly adjusted the piece of headgear to make sure it didn't fall off, more focused on the student council president's explanation. In spite of herself, Noriko grinned broadly. "Heh. You read me like a book, Yuzuki-chan. Fine, I take the question back. I accept the position of Prime Investigator, and will respect this hat and the authority it confides in me until such time I return it." She bowed like a showman, hand reaching up to ensure the hat didn't slide off. A part of her couldn't believe how easily she accepted the whole situation, but there was no hiding how deeply the situation appealed to her sense of curiosity and mischief. Switching back to her investigative persona, Noriko couldn't quite remove the shark-like grin on her face. She continued making notes- the cause of the incident was something neither Rio nor Yuzuki would divulge, despite both being in on it and lacking any traits that implied they would endorse such events. The newly crowned detective couldn't even begin to theorize the cause of the situation, and the fact she hadn't thought about it before was a major oversight on her part. "Understood. If I ask something out of bounds, don't be afraid to let me know." "For the monsters... the most mundane explanation would involve special effects, like animatronics or a really convincing costume, but I'm not completely sold on that. Most special effects are CGI anymore, or limited to explosions or the like. Even then, it'd be extremely difficult to make an animatronic that convincing, let alone a costume, especially when this town's propensity towards the insane means you can find cosplayers walking down the street at almost any time." The second year's face scrunched up as she considered it all. "The simplest explanation would be that the rumors are true, but that would raise a dozen more questions- where did the monsters come from? Why did it take so long for them to surface? Where did they go? How come there hasn't been a reliably recorded event like that to be found in any history books? Why did they only appear today, and not hundreds of years ago?" "One theory I've been toying with is some sort of terrorist attack or a yakuza trying to muscle its way into the city through fear. Considering some of the things lying around that students have been able to get a hold of, a particularly well funded group could probably get a hold of some convincing machinery and equipment to imitate a monster attack..." "...but that doesn't match your comment of them being very much human or at least appearing to be. Or more specifically, your ability to definitively say that. If they had been convincing enough to fool so many people, why would you in specific notice there was a human element and not any of them? And what about the rumors of people with super powers? That rumor matches your clue more closely, but it raises much of the same questions as the monster rumors." Stumped, Noriko closed her eyes and continued to think about it. "Mass hallucination is out. A chemical weapon or something of the sort would have closed the park down for much longer than it did, attracted the attention of the JSDF, and likely affected a much larger area than just one corner of Ruwashi. That, and I trust my ability to judge other people's character, and I don't think you're lying when you say it should be ruled out." The detective rubbed the bridge of her nose. She was going in circles again. "Time to think of a different angle. Motive. The park event... it was sloppy, no matter how I look at it. If it was meant to intimidate competing yakuza branches or law enforcement or... anyone, what would be the point of attacking such an area with so few people going through it compared to the rest of the city? Why remain anonymous?" "I have to think it wasn't planned, or at least went entirely off the rails of any plan there was at the start of it all. There's simply nothing to gain from this." Which left her back at no leads. Another angle. She had to have SOME source of information, if Yuzuki was so confident in her ability to figure it out- wait. "Speaking of motives... you and Rio-chan. Both of you know more than you're willing to say, but are happy to encourage me to figure things out. You're connected to this somehow." Noriko rocked back and forth in her seat. "That's the only reason to be so secretive about this whole thing." She said, slowing down to think. "I can't imagine you're the only people involved, either. You certainly wouldn't be the cause of the events in the park if you're happily admitting so much to me. So it's safe to assume the incident is counter to whatever goals or desires you have." The teen wrote it down in her notepad. Flipping through it as she thought, she quickly found her momentum dying out. Very much human, or seem to be. That had to be the key, but she couldn't piece it together. She remained silent for a moment before realizing she wasn't alone in the room. Stiffening, Noriko looked back to Yuzuki with her face tinted red. "Sorry, I got caught up in the moment." Shaking away her discomfort, she straightened and looked the purple-haired girl in the eye. "At this time, there honestly doesn't look to be a logical explanation." Noriko's expression darkened. "But I'm not giving up, either. There HAS to be an answer. If I can't find a logical explanation, then the answer simply isn't logical. This is Nagashima. The world capital of crazy. If it can happen ANYWHERE, it can happen here." The teen bit her lip in thought. "Very much human, or seem to be. That's the only explanation left; what people saw in the park wasn't monsters, it was people acting like monsters." She hesitated a moment, before burying her head in her hands. "But that makes no sense either! Why call them monsters if they were only acting the part? If they DID look like monsters, why dress up like that? If they WERE monsters, where the hell did they come from and why did they attack? What about the explosions, and just what the hell was the helicopter doing there? How am I supposed to piece this together when none of it has any connection to reality or sanity?" Noriko shook her head, taking a few deep breaths. "I'm- I'm sorry, I'm just going in circles now. I need a moment to rest." She glanced up, expression apologetic. "Sorry to bother, but would you happen to have some asprin lying around? This headache is making it so hard to concentrate." The second year closed her eyes. "So... what CAN you tell me? It's obvious I'm missing something big here... or maybe I'm over thinking it?" |

"You're right on that count about Rio-chan and myself," Yuzuki said as she nodded towards Noriko affirmatively, She brushed a bit of hair out of her eyes and closed her eyes. "There certainly is a connection between both of us to the incident. Hm. No, that's wrong. There is a connection between us and the cause of the incident. The specific explanation for what happened is pretty restrictive between those who know the root cause. "If I had to use an analogy, the confidentiality is sort of like the same secrecy that illusionists use for their stunts. To keep people from trying to emulate that sort of thing," Yuzuki concluded, nodding to herself. She frowned a bit. "Of course, there's also the fear that knowing about this specific 'stunt' would make the community of 'those in the know' look quite suspicious. We want to keep away from that sort of thing. When I use the word 'we,' I'm talking about a good number of people. Possibly in the hundreds now." Seriousness flashed in her eyes. "You could say that this is an extremely delicate situation. I will also tell you that if you fulfilled a certain 'prerequisite,' then a lot of people will be a lot more forthcoming to your investigation. As for the details of this prerequisite... It is something that you could know immediately to be the key. Unquestionably. To the point where you would likely solve the entire case just by virtue of fulfilling it." Yuzuki looked Noriko in the eye. "From experience, I will say that there is a very strong possibility that you have the Potential to pull that trump off." After that, she allowed her expression to lighten up again. "I appreciate that you are trying to understand the motive behind it~ In terms of helpfulness, it will better your understanding of how Rio-chan and I are affiliated with the situation. It might even bring you closer to understanding what powers were at work in this case. "However, if you try and quantify the reasons for the incident, you will eventually reach a dead end. In a word, I would describe the incident in the park to be 'pointless.' There is no intelligent decision at work behind it, and if you manage to come up with a reasonable motivation for the incident, then you will be on the wrong train of thought. "As for the rumours, I will say that there is a lot that you can gain from listening to them. The bulk of them are groundless conspiracy theories, but the recurring themes should speak to you. For now, I will confirm at least this much. The yakuza had no connection to this incident, directly or indirectly." She spoke the last words with an irrefutable sense of honesty. |

Noriko took Yuzuki's explanation in quietly, writing it down. "No real motive, no yakuza." That cut away a lot of explanations and potential leads. "Large group connected, possibly in the hundreds, trying to distance themselves from this event." That made sense- nobody would want to be affiliated with that kind of massacre. "The park was not planned, as I guessed. It was an act made on a whim. It was... somebody snapped." Something clicked, and the teen detective opened her eyes. "Somebody loosely connected to you and others in the same group snapped- it was sudden, it was unintended, and it was violent. Possibly even several people." There was a fragile certainty to the words, almost as if she was asking for confirmation. She repressed a shiver. The thought someone could do anything like that on a whim, lit a fire in her stomach. She found her grip on her pad threatening to crush it before she took a breath to steady herself. "That's why your group is trying to stay away from it, keeping out of the public eye- being even loosely connected to something so horrid and so recent would not end well for any involved. Discrimination, accusations, blame..." Noriko slowly settled on the thought. It fit. No contradictions she could spot; maybe not the exact details, but it seemed reasonable. "The next step is to find the connection between you and them. If I could potentially end up in the group with you, figuring that out is more important than ever." She laughed in a pitiful attempt to clear her nerves. If this was some sort of cult, she wanted nothing to do with it. The teen paused for a moment to think. "It has to be something to do with the rumors. The big four floating around are aliens, superpowers, demons, and monsters." Noriko shook her head. "Can't believe I'm actually considering this. Yuzuki-chan. Your group... The rumors are related to it, is that right?" There was a strong tone of skepticism to her voice as she continued. "Are you claiming that you're aliens or something?" Her own palm impacted her face. "No, no. That's not right." She shifted in her seat. This entire line of thinking was crazy. "Your group... it's capable of things like what happened in the park. Maybe some government technology, maybe some sort of club of illusionists, aliens, monsters, superheroes, whatever. I don't know. It doesn't matter. You can do that somehow and whatever 'that' is it makes people think you're monsters." The detective slowly stood. "That's the conclusion you've lead me to, but..." Noriko shook her head sadly. "I can't figure out how your group does it. There's no such thing as magic or super powers or monsters or demons, but everything here is implying that's the case. You just can. The fact of the matter is that I can't accept something so vague, so- I'm sorry to say this- ridiculous as 'you just can' as long as there are other possibilities to explore." Noriko paced. "I'm a teenager working off second hand information from random gossip and two people who, while reliable and kind as far as I can tell, flat out admit they're not giving me all the information. It's just far more likely I've made an error somewhere than any of those major rumors bearing the slightest resemblance of truth." She stopped, frustration clear on her features. "What am I missing?" " 'How' we do it will require a bit of belief. No, a lot of it. Have you ever heard of 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue?' Or read it? The twist ending was quite silly. An orangutan was the perpetrator. The truth is something like that. You really need to experience it in order to believe it," Yuzuki said, nodding at Noriko. It was understandable that she would be weary, particularly considering the outlandishness of the rumors. "And I'm not claiming to be anything, especially not an alien of any sort. It'll be tough for you to investigate this incident, given the lack of information about it... However, it looks like you are good at linking things together. I'll tell you this; there have been other incidents similar to this. Public damage was destroyed for unknown reasons. I can think of at least two incidents that also happened in the park. I will also tell you that I was affiliated in one of those incidents." |

"I've read it, yeah." Noriko nodded. If it was something like that, it wasn't surprising that she was having trouble figuring things out. "I assume that experiencing it myself is the 'trump' you mentioned earlier?" The blond girl rocked back and forth on her feet. "No sense keeping a secret from someone who's already seen it, after all." Yuzuki's encouragement re-lit the shine in the second year's eyes. She retrieved her note pad and started scribbling again, taking a moment to note 'no aliens'- at this point it was actually probable enough to consider otherwise. At this point she didn't miss a beat, even when she wrote down a reminder to look up other incidents with public property being destroyed in the park and other areas. "I see..." Noriko glanced up at Yuzuki. Was she capable of doing the same thing the person in the park had? Would she eventually be capable of that? It was unsettling to look at a perfectly cheery young girl and think of the park's incident- or incidents as she had just been told. ...strap a big enough bomb to a monkey and it can do that to- potential doesn't matter, what matters is what you do with the potential. Reassured, Noriko smiled and bowed to the girl. "Yuzuki-chan... thank you for all your help. If there's anything I can do to return the favor, please name it." |

"Of course I'll be asking you for favors! The office of Prime Detective isn't just for show, you know! I'll be counting on your brains if we ever run into any crises, okay?" Yuzuki grinned as she stood up and bowed back towards Noriko. She gave the girl a thumbs up. "But make sure that you figure out what's going on, alright? I have faith in you. Don't let anything drive you up a wall, since you have the Potential to get at the truth." |

"Ah, right..." Great, conscripted two interviews in a row. Despite her growing debt, the second year couldn't help but grin and return the thumbs up. "I won't give up until the case is solved. You've given me plenty to look into, Yuzu-chan." She grinned in spite of herself. The entire situation was... frustrating, it was confusing, and it was unsettling. A challenge. The first she'd had in far too long. Being declared a detective- of a highschool or not- and having both an assignment from the school paper editor and one from the student council president was a promise of adventure. Noriko laughed, imagination running wild and her carefully hidden side slipping to the surface. She quickly covered the laugh with a clearing of the throat, trying her best to look hardboiled and not cheeky like she was really feeling. "Right. My number is ###-####. I'll be waiting for you to call next time you have a case, or just want some company." A final bow, and the blond girl began making her way to the door. |
