Rio's eyebrows shot up, though with the hat and goggles, it might be hard to notice.

She glanced away, and reached into her pocket to get the cigarette holder she had hidden there. She put it in her mouth, and thought things over.

"Well, okay, that is a lot like the sort of wounds I've been seeing...but, tell me, what were you doing with a camera in the park?"

"M-my art c-credit. Ph-ph-photograph-phy. I-I was taking pictures of ch-ch-ch-chrys- flowers," the boy said as he produced another set of photographs which certainly were of chrysanthemum flowers. Turning them over would reveal that the timestamp was on the day of the incident. He practically melted into a chair, drained with the effort of having to talk.

"W-well...?"

Rio looked down at the photos. Chrysanthemums. Why was he photographing those? If ever a flower could look arrogant, it was a chrysanthemum. She just imagined them laughing derisively behind a petal used like a hand. God.

"Ah. So, what? I mean, you act like you're trying to prove something, but I've already written the article, and I'm not sure we can print pictures like this. Here, I'll make you a deal, hand me the monster pictures, I'll go scan them in, and if we get permission to use them, we'll give you a byline, sound fair?"

Not bothering to wait for an answer, she hopped upright, dived past the desk, and snatched the pictures from his hands. In the process, she knocked over an orange pill bottle spilling its contents on the desk top and causing the bottle, itself, to drop to the floor, the sound of it falling masked by Rio's footsteps.

She stepped outside of the office, leaving the stuttering boy alone in her office with a large pile of brightly colored pills.

"I j-just wanted to know w-what that wa-"

Then Rio grabbed all of his pictures and sped out of the room. He somehow managed to slump deeper into his seat as if trying to weld himself against the back of the chair. He breathed out heavily and shuddered, completely drained by what little interaction he had with the editor.

What he really needed was sugar. Instant energy. He had to eat when he was stressed like this. He dully noted the colorful pills and took little time in grabbing some by reflex and swallowing them. He frowned. That didn't taste like candy.

"Scan these and call Fujimoto back. This guy gives me the creeps," Rio said to Rin, and turned back toward her office.

"Why do I have to work the scanner?" Rin asked.

"Because I have to talk to our friend in there."

Rin smirked.

"Oh. Have fun with that."

"Ostrich woman," Rio said, going to the most common insult Rin heard. The other girl grimaced and turned away, and Rio headed back into her office.

"Here, my assistant is scanning those photographs in. Why don't you tell me exactly what you saw?" she said, sliding back behind her desk.

"Um... Well, I was just photographingandthen..." Oriyama said, blinking slightly at his eloquence. With the small bubbles of warmth that seemed to be flowing through him, it seemed like he could speak without stuttering. Rio would hear the boy speaking normally, but the boy certainly heard something different. It seemed like he was blinking more often. "Wellyousee. There was thiscommotion allofa sud den. I think that there was a girl withoutany li m b s. But afterthatI ha ve no id

"Right, monsters. Can you tell me anything more?" Rio said, trying to remain patient.

She had a bored expression on her face for a moment. Then she spotted the pill bottle. Did he...? Had he...?

Oh, shit.

No part of Rio's face, other than her widening eyes, indicated that anything was wrong.

He's going to freak the fuck out. I should do something!

Reaching into her desk, she turned on her digital audio recorder. She had to get a record of this.

The boy could distinctively smell the dark red of his uniform. He breathed in deeply, breathing in the colours of the room, the browns and blues and yellows and whites, as a well of tingling heat washed through his system. He blinked at the room and frowned. Maybe he was sick?

He heard Rio's question in a crescendo, building up from her speaking tone to a stormlike rumble. The boy winced and slid his chair away from the soundquake, closing his eyes and tensing his jaw as the Godzilla voice shook the world. And then her question came again in a whispering echo.

"The monsters... One was a bird-like thing... It cried, mostly." He began to worry when he heard his voice warble, turning itself inside out with fantastic pitch bends. He tried again. "...It cried, mostly." Normal. Good.

"And the other one was... Uh... M-melting limbs. And someone else was firing off wind..."

Wait...if one of the few people who thought something unusual was going on freaked out, perhaps he would be too embarrassed to come back and cause trouble.

"So, we've got a sobbing bird and...Firing off wind? What the hell does that mean?"

A thought struck her.

"Can a bird even cry?"

She opened up her laptop, and went to youtube, typing in "crying bird" and found a video of a parrot imitating a crying baby.

"Something like that?" she asked, turning the computer for him to look at.

"A-ah?" Oriyama asked as Rio's words zoomed past him with a rattle. He didn't catch her first two questions, but he did see her expression. A lightbulb in her head had clicked on and he winced at the light that poured out from it. No. It was in her lap. And there was some distorted green blur there crying at ear-bleeding volume.

"W-what? No, make it stop!" he said, clamping his hands over his ears. He could hear his blood flow with the rumble of an avalanche. He echoed, "W-what?"
