Noriko flipped to a spare page in her notebook and wrote down her contact information. With a quick jerk, he pulled the page out and handed it to her conversation partner. "Here you go."

"Monsters, huh?" The teen flipped back to her previous place in her notebook, jotting down the tidbit of info with a somewhat skeptical look. Still, if that many people claimed to see monsters, they had a reason to claim so. "No records of any filming either... though that doesn't prove much for the reason you pointed out." She continued to scribble into the palm-sized pages.

Could have been related to animatronics, but there would be traces of it. It's unlikely to have been the helicopter, because there have been more than enough reports about that being present too. Not to mention they would have had to get it into the park, and as many people there who had seen the disaster unfold, SOMEBODY should have brought up cranes or the like in their testimony. Hallucinogenic effects from chemicals might explain it, and all it'd take are a few people screaming about monsters to convince the others there was one there if it was nasty enough. She slowed to a stop. As reluctant as she was to even consider it...

Going by face value, though, a monster- more likely some sort of strange animal- would presumably be more direct in its attacks than a random explosive, which could explain the odd bell curve. People who got too close, and people smart enough to stay back, just not far back enough. But where did it come from? How did it get into the park without anyone noticing it? I'd be willing to write this off as Nagashima being Nagashima, but this isn't quite like the other times, if only because of the disturbingly large body count and the silence from authorities on the manner. The rumors spreading so quickly... there's gotta be a reason for it happening now when it hasn't caught on like this over any other incident I've seen.

The blond resisted the urge to grind her teeth on the rubber of her eraser- she'd been trying to quash that habit for some time. "I can't avoid it- there had to have been something that convinced people they were seeing a monster. Special effects, hallucinogens, a really big animal... the first begs the question of how nobody saw the cranes or other proverbial strings, and the last asks where the thing came from, where the explosions came from, and how it took this long for anyone to see it- the park is big, but not that big."

"Hallucinogens from a chemical weapon is technically possible, but the odds of every single one of those witnesses seeing a monster isn't too great... how consistent were the descriptions of the monster? If they're not very, then the mass hallucination theory gets some support, but if they're fairly similar, then it kind of blows a hole in it." Noriko rubbed her temples, trying to mull it over.

Rio relaxed a bit. If she focused more on the "monster" part and less on the "Russian Helicopter" part, maybe she wouldn't get abducted. Wait a minute.

That could lead her to that rogue. Whatshername. Monto.

She entered the girl's e-mail, and began to collect files off of the hard drive, picking each carefully, giving the girl maybe a third of her information. Nothing that outright stated what had gone on, but enough to tantalize her.

"I haven't really heard much. Maybe if you could track down some people who were there, you could find out more? I know there were a bunch of Taiyoutono students who were there, either while it happened, or shortly afterward."

Rio took another bite of the sandwich, thinking over that. Yes, it would be better to get her to talk to people who had been there. If they were familiar with her, they could more easily track her down once she inevitably awoke. And they'd be more interested in doing it.

"Okay, I'm going to send this to you. You send me what you find out, and if any of the requests I've got prove fruitful, I'll forward them to you. Now, mind, I'm not sure there's going to be much here that wasn't in the article."

She paused for a moment.

"Just out of curiostiy, how are you thinking of starting the investigation?"

"Probably the way you suggested- looking for witnesses and seeing if any of them are willing to talk. Small details, especially the kind only one or two of them might have been in position to notice, can often change the entire picture. After that... well, there are a few leads. The park is still closed off to the public as far as I know, so that's a no-go. The scene's probably been analyzed and picked clean by now."

"The Russian-slash-Japanese company thing is a bit of a loose theory and I'm not sure I'm going to stick my nose into that stuff without an inkling of what's going on, but I could probably do a general web search for info on any in the area. Probably a dead end without anything pointing to one in specific." She rubbed her, jaw, resisting the urge to stand and pace. Noriko began flipping through her notes.

"I'll also look up info on explosives for anything that would produce an injury bell curve with minimal shrapnel. That leads to terrorist implications and other unhappy places, but when a body count is involved that's kind of unavoidable." She briefly considered asking her father about details, but swiftly dismissed the idea. He would worry, she would get nothing, and she didn't think she could bring herself to continue if he forbade her from looking into it further. He had enough to worry about with his increased workload, anyways.

"...I dunno. The lack of official records, the almost cliche 'gas leak' excuse- I get the feeling the police might not know much about this either. This is... really unusual. I'm starting to see how all this buzz has popped up." Noriko bit her lips. "That's kind of frightening. There's SOMETHING that killed all those people and scared the crap out of the rest, and as far as I know, it's still up and about." She sighed wearily. "So much for getting to bed early tonight- I'm not gonna be able to sleep until I've looked this over closer."

"Well, you know, at this school, I can think of at least one student and one teacher who know about explosives. It wouldn't be that hard to get some information on that angle, and wouldn't take any information requests."

She looked down at the files she had sent, and briefly checked to make sure none had an origin that pointed to Bedlam. That would be embarrassing.

"And it is a bit of a doozy, isn't it?" she asked, "It's bad that those people were hurt, but it leaves an excellent puzzle. Sadly, it's hard to focus on solving it when there's a moral obligation to solve it, isn't it?"

She leaned back again, and began to work on her sandwich again. Despite the fact that she was eating, her stomach gurgled as if she were hungry. Maybe Charmaine was beginning to rub off on her? Rio dismissed the thought. That woman had to have a tapeworm, or something. No way she could ever match that ravenous hunger.

"So, how about you try to have something written up in a week. Maybe aim for a thousand words. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out, and don't worry about getting it exact. Under, over, we can work things out."

"Ah..." Noriko nodded. "Raleigh-sensei is the teacher, right? Who's the student, though?" She wrote down a note to speak with the chemistry teacher at some point to see if there were any explosives her knew of with the proper effects.

Rio's question gave the teen pause. A look of guilt flashed over her expression. "Yeah... thinking about it, it's kind of horrible of me to be treating this like a puzzle." Sorrow faded to determination. "More reason for me to solve it, though- I can't just let this lie, if only for the sake of the victims. Someone or something needs to be held accountable for their actions."

Noriko's stomach interrupted her bout or self-righteousness by echoing Rio's, earning an embarrassed chuckle from the blond. "I'll have something by the end of the week, then. I'll make sure to send you any evidence I find in the meantime, too." Smiling, the teen stood and bowed. "Thank you for your time, um..." With a blink, the teen came to a realization.

"Ah... we never exchanged names. I'm Noriko Tsukino."

"The student council president. I think I heard a while back that she was related to a special effects artist, so she might have information on that angle, too--" not to mention, she had actually been present, and so might be able to ease the girl into the full terrible knowledge with a bit more grace than Rio could, "--but it might be best to talk to Raleigh-sensei first, and see if he knows anything that works, there."

Rio nodded.

"Rio Matsushita," she said, shooting upright, and reaching across the desk to shake the other girl's hand, "but if you're writing for the paper, you can call me 'Kaicho' like the rest. I tried to make them call me 'Onee-san', but the third years didn't like doing that. And I guess I'll be counting on you, from now on, Tsukino-san."

She waited for the girl to leave, then called up Bedlam. It might be a good idea to let people know what was going on.
