Noriko nodded. "I understand. Whatever happened in the park was big, and there are so many rumors going around that the facts have been lost in the shuffle." She remained standing, not willing to risk offending by taking a seat before offered (though the way the girl threw her feet up on the desk and used a letter opener to apply a spread implied she wouldn't care). "What I'm looking for... just about anything I can learn of it. I've always been obsessed with mysteries, and having this shoved in my face by gossip 24/7 means I can't bring myself to tune it anymore." She admitted. "The general overview is probably the best place for me to start, and what you can tell me about the anomalies would be a big help." |

Rio pointed the dirty letter opener at the chair, her face briefly adopting a peeved look, and nodded forcefully, implying that she wanted Noriko to sit. "Well, on a sunday a little while baack, something happened in the park. A lot of people were injured, and there was a lot of metallic wreckage. According to a police officer I was able to contact, many of them had been injured in a fashion 'consistent with concussive force' meaning that it could've been an explosive or something. Not much shrapnel, but like they were vibrated apart." "Zan" was the term that Rio knew for that effect, but she wasn't about to explain this to the girl. Or maybe she was already awake? She quickly scanned her; potential, but not awake. Might be good to steer her a bit, keep her safe until she could deal with things. "The really interesting part is that there was a sort of reverse bell curve on the severity of wounds. A lot of people with minor injuries, a lot of people with extreme injuries, who had to be put in intensive care. Not a lot of people with injuries of middling severity. Reverse of what you'd expect, honestly." Hopefully that would have her chasing records. She didn't want to mention the several persona users who had been treated for exhaustion following their attempts at healing the crowd. "And all of this is inconsistent with the helicopter crash that there are records of having occurred, there." Rio sighed, and folded a piece of toast over on itself, making a toast-and-nutella sandwich that she started to eat, holding the plate up underneath her chin to catch the crumbs. |

The look and nod had Noriko promptly plant herself into a chair. She retrieved a note pad and scribbled down the basic run through, less because she needed it and more because it would be easier to keep it all in her head that way. She immediately set to taking in the oddities of the case, gently chewing the eraser of her pencil thoughtfully in between rapid scribbling. Lack of shrapnel is extremely strange- not only do many explosives focus on that over the direct force of the explosion, any explosive built around the latter would generate some as a side effect of the casing and surrounding objects being vaporized. If it was powerful enough to disintegrate any shrapnel before it could scatter outwards, that would have been one hell of a blast... at least, from what little I know on the subject. Noriko briefly cursed her lack of knowledge regarding explosives and made a note to look up explosives that didn't produce much shrapnel. Something involving a chemical reaction was most likely. The bell curve is another strange bit, but I'm not sure how to explain that one. It could have been that the explosive was specifically targeted at those injured most severely, and the minor injuries were from people watching at a safe distance. That does support my theory of a turf war getting out of hand- the targeted victims would be the members of the opposing groups, and any gawkers would have taken some minor injuries. She shook her head at herself. Tunnel vision was a constant danger, and she needed to avoid jumping to conclusions right away. The special effects gone wrong rumor could fit that just as well, with the actors and stuntmen being the most injured. Another note, this time to look up the less injured people to ask what they saw- those closest to the blast likely didn't have time to register whatever had happened. The helicopter crash mention gave Noriko pause- that bit had been repeated several times, but it had gone over her head until now. A camera crew from the air attempting to film the scene, perhaps getting too close to the explosives? That's the most probable scenario. The special effects theory is gaining ground here. It'd even explain the aliens and super powered people comments. She added another note to look up any records of whoever was in the helicopter at the time. The teen mulled it over. Still, this doesn't add up. If it was just a filming incident gone wrong, why claim a gas leak? That does open the possibility of a terrorist attack, with the police keeping things wrapped up to avoid causing a panic... Another possibility popped into her head. Or maybe they don't know themselves? Before she could get too far with that thought, she flipped to a new page in her note pad, writing down a quick list of theories with bullet points of supporting and contradicting facts. Picking up steam, Noriko looked up at Rio with a curious glance. "What about witness testimony? From the sounds of things, there were a lot of people who had the misfortune of being too close to the event. Is there a general consensus at to what happened there straight from the horse's mouth, or has everything been the same 'friend of a friend' stuff floating around school?" She paused. "And is there anything you could find out about the helicopter, like what kind of equipment was on it?" |

"The helicopter? Russian surplus, it looked like," she cringed inwardly at revealing the 'Russian' part, "Kamov...from the descriptions and a quick wikipedia search, it looks like a ka-126, but I'm not sure. Weren't a lot of those made, but perhaps it was built with bought schematics. Hard to say. You know how alternate company equivalents are, right? Impossible to find out who made it." She took another bite of her sandwich. "I've been asking around, seeing if a flight plan was registered, but, y'know...school paper. They've got other people asking the same thing who need that information to deal with what happened. They'll probably get back to me in three or four weeks to tell me about the flight plan that was registered. If one was registered." Glancing down, she looked over the notes the girl was writing. She was good at this. |

Noriko jotted down the details of the helicopter for future research, tilting her head at the 'Russian surplus'. That's... why? I know helicopters aren't exactly something you can walk into a store and buy, but there has to be plenty of Japanese sources that wouldn't require it to be shipped overseas. If they were a film crew from Russia and it was owned by the company I could see that happening, but that just raises the question of why the hell they'd pick Nagashima, considering its infamy. Did they just have a local subsidiary in this city? Maybe it's the other way around- Japanese corporation with Russian branches? A few more notes made it to the pile- she'd search for a Russian company with a Japanese branch or visa-verse, one that would involve filming or had a shady record. As she wrote the last two words, she paused. Did she really know what she was getting into? As many vigilantes as the city had (and as many times she acted as a smaller scale version in school), she had no desire to take on an entire yakuza branch. She added an addendum that she'd need to be careful if there were any signs of foul play. "Yeah, I can see what you mean." Noriko rubbed the back of her head with a small smile. "Has any witness testimony been released to the public, or at least crossed your path? I mean, something more solid than 'I have a friend whose cousin's niece twice removed who said' word of mouth that's been going around?" She repeated the earlier question politely. |

Rio threw up her hands, or, more accurately gestured to the ceiling with her sandwich and chewed very fast to to clear her mouth. She bobbed her head once, twice, three times before she managed to swallow the toast. "Welcome to the party!" she said, "we've got all of the witness testimony. Know what the problem with it is?" The girl put the sandwich back on the plate and the plate back on her desk, and then leaned forward. "Are you really interested in looking deeper into this rumor?" Rio asked. |

Noriko blinked, staring for a moment at the sudden outburst. "All the..." Problem? There was a problem with-? "Ah. The problems I could see off hand are that the testimony is either contradictory, unreliable due to the chaos, lacks supporting evidence, or-" She paused for a second, all the crazy rumors she'd heard popping in her head for the briefest of moments. "-simply have no basis in reality. Probably a combination thereof, if not one." The blond girl stared the editor in the eye as she leaned forwards. The ominous way she'd questioned her desire to continue set off alarm bells in her head- yakuza was suddenly much more plausible in her mind. Not lowering her gaze for instant, Noriko nodded. "I am. I want to know more about this. It just seems... everything about it is suspicious, and I think this is important." "...I'm guessing from your question that this is more dangerous than I'd thought," she ventured, "And that you know more than you're letting on. I also think, though this is more of a theory, you're withholding it to protect people. Possibly including me, yourself, or both of us. Am I getting warm, or am I stone cold?" The logical part of her mind was too busy trying to reconcile everything to point out how bad an idea it was to press on blindly like she was, and her curiosity imbued her with an unnatural (even for her) boldness. |

Rio blinked twice, this girl was perceptive, but beyond the extra eye movement, Rio gave no outward sign. Her internal monologue summed it up, though: shitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshit "Er...kind of lukewarm, actually. I was just going to say that I'd like a bit of quid pro quo if you want any more of what we have on this. How would you like to write up a followup piece for the paper?" |

Well wasn't that the most specifically and intentionally useless bit of info ever? The double blink didn't help settle any suspicions, either, but it wasn't pronounced enough to nail down as a tell. Noriko thought about pressing the subject, but her sanity finally rang in and reminded her that charging on blindly into danger would only end with her hurt and no more informed than before. She instead nodded once. "Sure, I'd be delighted to write for you in exchange for more information. The less unknowns there are for people to speculate on, the less random tinfoil hat theories I have to listen to." There, a logical and non-accusatory explanation as to why she wanted to investigate further without coming off as a threat to any secrets the shorter girl held. Noriko was careful not to show how proud she was of herself for that explanation. "I do admit I'm not much of a writer, but I'm certain I can give you something workable. If not, I can work off the information by doing coffee runs or the like." She rubbed the back of her head, drifting out of detective mode and into something more normal for herself. Reporting would be an interesting experience. |

Rio took another bite of her sandwich. "Good, good. I've got some information in text form; give me your e-mail address, and I can send it to you." She put the sandwich back on the plate, thinking for a moment. "That would be better with some banana on it. Oh, fuck yes, banana would be goddamned awesome. Okay, I hate to burst your bubble, though, but one of the most consistent themes has been the presence of 'monsters,' and I haven't been able to find a record of a film shooting being registered with the government, but, well, you know how the civic government is around here." She woke up the laptop, and opened up her e-mail client. |
