"Yeah, people with super powers... crazy, huh?" Ken smiled in response, trying his best to hide any hint of deception from his voice as he tried to prevent himself from nervously laughing. If only Noriko knew about this whole 'persona' business, she might be a bit more accepting of the explanation. But he knew that telling the girl anything about it would only invite trouble, especially if some of the rumours of people dying were true. "But I can see why you're rereading the book, it is nice to go back and find all those little moments which suddenly make sense in hindsight. One of my favourite parts of reading, in fact." Then Noriko mentioned helping people find their lost things, and couldn't supress a small smile. "Ah, I see, you find people's lost possessions. That's rather kind of you, it must be your inner detective, Tsukino-san." Ken responded. He briefly considered warning Noriko to be careful if she did look into the rumours, but he knew that doing so would be odd, seeing as how he had changed the subject already. |

Being more focused on chewing her lunch for that brief instant, any tells that would have tipped her off slipped by her. "I agree. Little details are always important- its surprising how much a single one in the right place can enhance a story. In investigations, a small detail can change the whole course of a case. Life's all about the little things when you think long enough about it." Noriko smiled at his comment about her 'inner detective'. It had a much nicer ring than 'inner delinquent'. "My father's a police officer. I really hope to follow in his footsteps someday. I think I've got the mind for it, too- I like helping people, and I've always been a knack for puzzles." |

"Well, I think you'll be a great officer when you're older. Unfortunately, you must first survive the horrors of education." Ken chuckled, pulling a bottle of water out of his bag. Holding it tightly with his hand, the Brit used his teeth to grip the top and twist it off, placing the bottle on the table to remove the top from his mouth. Putting that on the table, he took a swig of his water and then began the arduous task of screwing the top back onto the bottle. After a brief moment of struggle, he emerged victorious and put the bottle back into his bag. Glancing up, he gave a sheepish grin. "Sorry, those screw tops always make it difficult just to have a drink. Anyway, did you have any more questions you wanted to ask?" |

"Thanks." Noriko matched Ken's chuckle with one of her own. She watched the boy retrieve his water bottle, and was momentarily torn on whether she should offer to help until she saw he could open it just fine on his own. Still, it made her feel oddly guilty for not doing something. Returning his grin with a reassuring one, an idea came to mind. "I was gonna ask if you wanted something from the vending machine. I forgot to bring a drink, but I always have a bunch of small yen pieces for just such an occasion, and I figured it'd be a nice thank you for the good company." No screw tops, just a pop lid. The reason she gave for offering one was even true; it was just a happy coincidence that it meant he wouldn't have to struggle with the water bottle again for a little bit. "A candy bar for desert or later on isn't out of the question, either. The school's got some weird priorities with its budgets; the vending machines have a really good selection of stuff at any given time." |

"A thank you? You're the one who came over here and provided the good company, Tsukino-san. But if you're certain, I wouldn't mind some soda please. I'll pay you back though, promise." Ken felt that refusing Noriko's offer was probably not a good idea, even if it meant he felt a slight hint of guilt and embarassment. After all, the girl had offered and it was only polite of him to accept. The Brit raised an eyebrow over the comment on the school's budget though. "Ah, but the fact is that the vending machines being well-stocked leads to happy students. Happy students are usually attentive students, or at least don't cause as much hassle as unhappy students." He reasoned, adjusting his glasses slightly. "That, or the people in charge of the budget really like their snacks." |

Noriko rubbed the back of her head a bit bashfully, but didn't decline his offer to repay her. She had basically been pushing the drink onto him after all. His last comment got a laugh from her. "As much as I would love to think it's the former, I gotta pick the latter as the more likely explanation. Still, it's nice to think there might be some responsible decision making going on here." Hurrying over to the vending machines, the girl made it back with two cans in hand, both already opened. Noriko extended a cool, if plain, cola to Ken before taking her seat. Returning to her meal, she took a bite and washed it down with a clear colored soda. "I wasn't sure what you liked, so I got a basic cola. If you prefer clear, we can always switch." |

"No no, this is alright." Ken replied, smiling as he took the offered can of cola and taking a sip. The cool, fizzing liquid made a nice change from the plain water he'd had before. Putting the can on the table, he stretched briefly, before adjusting his tie. Taking a glance at the clock, the teen blinked and let out a small sigh. "Ugh, lunch is almost over... it's gonna suck going back to class. Oh well, suppose I'm just going to have to commit, eh?" Chuckling, the Brit picked up his can and took a big swig from it. "Anyway, how much do I owe you for this?" He asked Noriko, raising his can to indicate what he was talking about. "If I can't pay you back today, I'll get it to you tomorrow. Bit new to this whole yen thing." |

Noriko blinked. Looking at the clock, she yelped, and began taking large bites of her sandwich to finish it before time was up. She paused only a second to answer his question. "It was about 100 yen- pocket change, really. I'm not sure of the exact conversion rate, but it's very small." The words were followed with a big gulp of her drink. "Anyways, I really hope you enjoy your stay here. Nagashima has it's share of problems, but it's never a dull moment at the least. If you need anything, don't hesitate to talk to me at lunch or free period or the like." She smiled, the effect of which was ruined by having a sandwich shoved into it. |

"Right, gonna have to get it to you tomorrow. Any later than that and I'll owe you a favour." Ken smiled, and then had to supress a laugh as Noriko yelped and began to hurriedly eat her food. He took a large mouthful of his drink and then smiled at what was said. "I'm sure I'll enjoy my stay, especially if I meet nice people like you, Tsukino-san. And as for any problems, I'm sure I can handle them. But uh... thanks, for talking to me, y'know? It was really nice of you, and you didn't have to and, uh... I'm rambling a bit, aren't I?" The teen turned his face away, feeling a slight heat across his cheeks as he blushed, embarassed by what he was saying. "But anyway, I'll definitely see about the soccer club thing, and I hope we can hang out during lunch some more." Ken finished lamely, his blush vanishing as he recovered his usual colour. He finished his cola quickly, and grabbed his bag. "So uh... when you're done, we can head to class, Tsukino-san." |

"A little," she nodded, "but I can handle rambling. I actually don't talk to people much, but I figured it would only be right to give someone new a friendly welcome. I'm glad I did, too." Noriko stuffed the last few bites of sandwich into her mouth, savoring it and chewing quickly. She swallowed and stood. "I'm usually available during lunch, so I don't mind hanging out more around this time. I'm looking forwards to it, in fact." The teen finished her soda and tossed her backpack over her shoulders. "Ready to go when you are. Our teacher for the next period gets a bit grouchy when students are late, and I wouldn't recommend talking in class in front of her, but she's nowhere near as scary as she first seems. Don't let the spears fool you- she takes care of her students." |
