Ah, that's that then I suppose, Masahiro thought, glad for a bit of quiet, yet somehow disappointed. Hearing the students throw around frivolous rumors was rather fun, he had to admit. Of course, Noriko's suggestion made far more sense, but a healthy bit of speculation never hurt. As I know all too well.

"Yakuza, you say?" Masahiro turned to Noriko, looking rather surprised. "Pardon my ignorance, but are there actually such.. er, groups of people in this place?"

"There are, pal. Quite a lot of 'em." said Torako. "I've barely escaped getting browbeaten into one of those drug bars they got. Although this one huge guy helped me out once. Fairly sure he was Yakuza as well, but less scummy."

She leaned on the desk towards Conan.

"You hangin' in there, bud?"
whispered Torako right after Kiyoko. He was most likely stressed, but it was worth a check.

"Where else are we going to go?" the girl who had been proposing the demon-centric theory said, "the cafeteria's full and the pollen in the courtyard is really irritating.

"It couldn't have been Yakuza," the alien theorist said.

"Let me guess. Because Yakuza aren't aliens," the cynic said, beginning to pack up his things.

Conan glanced down at Torako and Kiyoko.

"Just waiting for the day to be over," he admitted, tiredly, "they're talking about doing a lot of renovations to the library, but the contractors are kind of stalling. It's just kind of frustrating to come in here and see how much has been burnt out."

He moved on to Masahiro's books.

"And these rumors are really bugging me, honestly. It seems as if no one's bothering to really research the situation."

"Hmm. Hallways, roof- I know the latter is supposed to be off limits, but that hasn't stopped... well, anyone." Noriko shrugged, almost amused at the last bit.

Turning back to Masahiro, she tilted her head. "I don't know of any in the school itself, but the city's pretty infamous for its high crime rate. It's also infamous for how many times you hear about a teenager beating up some random flunky that tried to make a quick buck. I think Nagashima's the place all the groups that couldn't compete with actual competence come to find a safer territory. That or the craziness that hits on a daily basis means people who live here are made of sterner stuff."

Making sure her books were in order, she slid them into her backpack. With a reassuring smile, she turned to the librarian. "I'm sure things will get better eventually. Just hang in there. Seeing this place in its current state kind of hurts too with all my fonder memories happening around here," the day she somehow managed to steal someone's underwear off them without even realizing it stuck out in her memory, "but that's gonna make it all the sweeter when it's back on its feet."

Kiyoko blinked at the skepticism towards Yakuza. "Yakuza...?" They were questioning the YAKUZA? In Nagashima, of all places? There were much stranger things to question. Mask Furai, for example. Or maybe the sock sniffer. Either way, the Yakuza seemed almost normal in Nagashima.

Bowing gratefully, Kiyoko picked up the books and receipt and began to put them in her bag, frowning at Conan's response. "I hope the rennovations are finished soon. It isn't quite as nice walking into a burnt up library." She paused, remembering something she'd wanted to bring up earlier. "Oh, right. Conan-san, can I speak with you for a moment?"

She did need some more volunteer hours.

"So this place is a haven for the weaker groups, is that what you mean?" Masahiro said. The fact that even young people could fend off gangsters so easily in this town was a fascinating tidbit. What exactly made the people of this town so proactive and powerful?

He watched the librarian file his books. The man looked like he could break a concrete block in two with his hands. This was definitely someone not to be messed with, and yet he looked exhausted. Like he was unaware of-- or unwilling to recognize-- his own strength.

"Ignore them," Masahiro said to Conan. "They'll lose interest soon. Look, one of them left already."

Torako stayed quiet. Her impromptu firefighting saved a bit of the library, but it still left the library in a shell of it's former self. And there was still no real cause of the fire in the first place.
"Fire."

"Uhh... Mr. Conan? Would you happen to have a copy of Dante's Inferno? Or did a certain tanned retard beat me to it?" asked Torako.

"Haven't had much time for poetry, but reading some might help me catch up."

The librarian settled down into his chair.

"Hmm...the Divine Comedy?" Conan asked and checked the computer, "Well, we don't have much translated medieval Italian poetry to begin with...and it looks like the certain tanned retard does indeed have it. I'll put in a request, get it from Rokketto, should have it by tomorrow."

He glanced over at Kiyoko.

"What can I do for you?" he asked.

"Essentially." Noriko nodded. "Nagashima's known for housing some of the world's oddest people and events. There are a number of confirmed clans of ninja and samurai littered about, reports of animals that shouldn't logically exist in Japan finding their way into public places and exhibiting far more intelligence than they should... Between that and the high vigilantism rate, the big groups don't touch it." She rubbed the back of her head. Ironic that the big crime rings being terrified of the town was one of the reasons it was so rife with lowlifes.

She relaxed a bit at the lack of response from the various rumor-mongers. Either they'd taken her advice, or they were speaking quieter. Looking through her books again to make sure everything was in order, she listened as the others spoke while waiting for Masahiro's response.

Kiyoko nodded. She felt a bit nervous bringing up the question, considering how intimidating -or at least, tall- Conan was, but the present was as good a time as any. "Well, recently a period opened up in my schedule, and I was hoping to get a few more volunteer hours in." She twiddled her thumbs. The girl seemed to have a problem with eye contact. "So, I was hoping I could help out at the library during that time, and possibly during lunch?"

Not after school, though; she had a job, after all. "I asked the people in the office, and they said I'd have to talk to you about it, so..."
