"So..." Charmaine raised an eyebrow at the frazzled-looking nurse. A car sped by, slowing down to the legal speed limit at seeing the police cruiser parked nearby. The woman suppressed an urge to glare at the driver as they passed. You would think people would respect the speed limit this close to a hospital, especially at this late an hour. Turning back to the young adult who had called, the officer tapped the tip of her pencil against her note pad, her tone as soft and comforting as she could manage. The person she was interviewing was obviously a bit shaken. "I want you to take your time. Try to remember with as much detail as you can, and speak slowly. I need to write this down for future reference." "Um..." Swallowing, the nurse leaned in conspiratorially, a gesture the officer returned. "This is gonna sound crazy, alright? So please, promise to hear me out first." Charmaine chuckled. "Ma'am, I'm solidly convinced this entire city should have padded walls. I won't judge you." The food lover gave her best reassuring grin. "You've already called this in, you might as well get your story out." With a slow nod, the woman began. "I was finishing my shift when it happened." She took a deep breath. "After checking on my patients one last time, I left the room and started walking down the hall towards the exit." The nurse paused to let Charmaine catch up. Once the albino woman had written it down, she continued. "The next thing I knew, one of the doors flew open, and a pink blur sped by and into the room across from the one it had left." "I almost dismissed it as a trick of the light- something caused by a lack of sleep- when I realized I had forgotten my phone. It took me a few minutes to find it. When I came back out with phone in hand, the blur appeared again and rushed by me into the room I was just in, closing the door behind me. It scared me out of my wits." Charmaine noticed the nurse glancing up at her every few moments, as if trying to gauge her reaction. "I... there have been a lot of rumors going around about what happened in the park. Demons, monsters, magic- my coworkers love gossip, so I'd heard it all." She shuddered, missing the very slight cringe from the officer in front of her. "My mind immediately went to the worst case scenario. I didn't want anything to happen to the patients, so I ran in after the blur." Charmaine blinked. "You tried to follow it?" The nurse flinched. "I know, I know- it was really stupid of me, but I was half asleep and in a panic. If I had been more alert, I probably would have gone for help instead. If it was related to what happened in the park, I could have been killed." She shifted in her spot on the bench. "Whatever I was expecting, it wasn't what I saw when I walked in." "Standing right next to the sleeping patients was a person. They were a bit on the tall side- probably a man, but I'm not sure- and dressed almost completely in pink. The exception was this light blue mask with darker blue spots and a white horn sticking out from its forehead. The outfit covered up any features I could've made out." Despite the spurt of confidence, she hesitated again. "This is... this is the part the story gets really crazy. They were standing over a patient. His arm had been broken the day before by some thugs who jumped him, and he was still covered from head to toe in bruises and cuts from when he came in. At the time, he was sleeping." Swallowing, the nurse closed her eyes and took the plunge. "His bruises and cuts were shrinking away to nothing, and his arm was making these popping noises. It looked like his body was putting itself back together." Hearing the sound of the pencil scratching against a note pad stop, she looked up at the police officer, expecting the older woman to berate her for wasting the police's time. Instead, Charmaine motioned for her to continue. Momentarily stunned, the nurse had to spend a minute to collect herself. "The masked person had their hands on his chest. There was some kind of weird glow around her arms, sinking into him. I just stood there for a minute trying to comprehend it. Before I knew it, they had finished whatever they were doing and noticed me. Muttered something sharp- English, I think? Definitely a curse word- and vanished into thin air." "I fainted." She looked embarrassed to admit it. "When I woke up, my coworkers were all clamoring over me and checking the patients. It turns out that everyone in that room and several of the other ones had made a massive step towards recovery A few patients that had only just arrived were almost ready to leave. A few other people had seen the blur too, but assumed they were seeing things. Nobody else saw them in detail like I did." "The security cameras in the halls didn't get a good look at the person- only blink and you'll miss it distortions on the film. There wasn't any footage of the person actually leaving the building, either." She sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I know, I know it sounds crazy. My bosses don't believe me either. They insisted there was a mistake somewhere in evaluating the injuries of the people that were coming in, and that I was suffering from sleep deprivation and needed a few days off to recuperate, starting tomorrow." "My coworkers and the patients are certain it has to be connected to the park event. It's the best explanation we can think of." The nurse looked up to Charmaine, concerned. "The others don't want to call the police; they're afraid they'll get thrown in the nut house, or they believe the person is trying to help and don't want to get them in trouble." She bit her lip. "I don't want anyone to get hurt. A friend of mine was at the park when the incident happened; she was all they way on the other side of it, thank goodness, but it still chills me to think how close she came to ending up as one of the people who were killed. If someone connected to that IS sneaking into the hospital... All I want is to know my patients and my coworkers are going to be safe." Looking genuinely shaken, she turned to the police officer. "Please, tell me there's something you can do about this." Charmaine closed her eyes in thought. "I believe you," the food lover began, "But I don't think I'll be able to start an investigation on this. My superiors aren't any more likely to accept this story than yours." Seeing the despair cross the nurse's expression, she hastily continued. "What I can do is tell you that from what you described, you have nothing to worry about. This person's presence is clearly helping, and if they had intended to cause harm, they would have done so before you'd caught them." The nurse lowered her head. "I... see. It's not much, but I guess it's better than seeing all those people stuck in the hospital for weeks." She closed her eyes. "Heh. Maybe this means some of them are on our side, if the rumors are true? That'd be comforting if it weren't so terrifying." With a shuddering breath, she stood. "That's all the information I have, officer. If there's nothing else, I need to get going and get my mind off this." Charmaine nodded, flipping her notebook closed. "Take it easy." She stood up along with the concerned woman, trying to smile in a comforting manner. Something was tugging at her to do something else to help, but what? "Let me know if you need anything else. I can't help on a professional level as is, but..." Reluctantly, she scribbled down a number at the bottom of her page and tore it from the pad. "This is my personal number. If something comes up, feel free to call me." The nurse seemed genuinely relieved, if only just. "Thank you." |
