Kiyoko was studying. In fact, almost everyone in class 3-3 was studying. They had a huge test coming up, and none of them wanted to fail. If they failed, that meant that their results would go up in front of everyone, and no one wanted to appear dumb, Kiyoko especially so. It didn't help that it wasn't exactly her best subject, but she was tearing through the book regardless. The library was utterly quiet, yet filled with the kind of silent tension that one usually finds at dinner parties between in-laws. Not a word was spoken, but the same message was going through almost everyone's mind: 'STUDY.' Some of the students would likely lash out if disturbed, possibly going postal and killing everyone in the room. Kiyoko, however, wasn't that kind of student. But it wasn't like anyone would come sit at her table and start pestering her with some conversation. No, of course not. That would be ridiculous. |

Wow, this library was packed. Was every third year in here? Christ. Joe could barely maneuver himself and his guitar around the tables to get to one of the only seats he could find. Also, everyone looked serious as a heart attack staring down at their books. What the hell was going on here? Oh right, there was a test coming up, wasn't there. Joe sighed. He didn't understand what the point of studying was. If he could pass these tests off of memory of the lectures alone, most of them probably could, too. Hell, he didn't even listen during class and he still got at least a 70 on every test. What, did everyone else just go to sleep along with the teacher when they got to class? Joe sat down across from some red-haired girl and threw his sheet music down onto the table. He still couldn't think of anything, but he didn't feel like being a whiny bitch today either, which meant there was hope for a new piece. If things went according to cliches, he'd have his opus by the end of the month. For now, though, he was stuck with a shitty ballad-ish piece, with an awkward drum beat that was in a different time signature from the guitar and bass, which alternated between two measures of 3/4 and one of 5/4. He should probably just stick with common time for now, he thought and frowned. He glanced across the table at the girl studying. Yeah, she didn't look too busy. This would only take a minute. 'Yo,' he said at a his normal volume. 'You know how to read sheet music?' |

Someone sat across from Joe, and Kiyoko glanced across the table for all of a second. They weren't talking, so she had no real motivation to talk back, at least for the moment. Her eyes flitted across the pages, attempting to absorb far more information than she actually was capable of doing in one sitting. The last thing she needed was a distrac - Kiyoko practically jumped with Joe addressed her. She looked up at him, surprised. "Um..." She needed to study, but he was asking nicely. Music was sort of a language, so she at least knew how to read simple melodies. "Y-yes. Why?" This guy was talking loudly. "And I think you need to whisper. Everyone's studying." |

The stack of books in Kuzuki's hands tottered as he made his way through the crowded library, and he steadied them for what seemed like the fourth time that day. The library blurred as he looked up, turning everything into colored smudges-- the red of blazers, the browns of books and tables-- until he didn't even know what was what. His head throbbed and whirled by turns, and his legs felt like to slip out from under him. As he staggered, his shin caught the edge of the nearest table, and he grit his teeth at the jolt of pain in his leg. "Oi!" he heard a voice from behind him. "Watch it!" "Sorry." Kuzuki waddled off, hating the pain and the summer heat and the way his head felt like it was full of cotton. Every step brought a fresh wave of dizziness through his head, and he clenched the books tighter, reluctant to let them fall. The noise from that would be unsightly, he knew from experience. Today was Wednesday, Kuzuki remembered inanely. Wednesday meant kendo practice and a two-hour trek through the Ruins to sharpen his and Grani's skills. After a week spent sleeping less than four hours a night and chugging black coffee twice a day (Father always took his black, he remembered), he didn't feel in any shape to be wielding a sword. If anything, he wanted to simply go home, curl up on his bed, wrap the blankets around him and sleep for days and days. But there was a big difference between what he wanted to do and what he had to do. Kuzuki's feet nearly gave out as he navigated a narrow space between chairs, and he hissed. Weakness disgusted him, made him feel sick. Weakness was not something to show to others. Steady, Kuzuki. He took a tentative step, then another. One foot forward, then the other. Every step jarred his head and made the dizziness worse, but he could cope. Keep those books from falling. Try not to bump into any chairs. No noise. Yeah, that's it. That's right. Step by step by step. And before he knew it, he was at the rearmost table. It was empty save for two others: a red-haired girl and another guy. The thing that caught his attention was the guitar balanced against the back of his seat and the sheets of music in his hands. "Pardon me." The words came out as a hoarse croak. "May I sit here? I have to study." As he laid the pile of books on the table, he covered his mouth to stifle a yawn. |

Joe blinked. What did him whispering have to do with people studying? Could they somehow not study unless everything was absolutely silent? Well, a couple of people seemed to be staring daggers at him, so he decided to lower his voice a bit. 'I want to see what you think of this,' he said. He frowned at the piece of music one more time before sliding it over to Kiyoko. The thing he didn't like most about it was that it was actually pretty good. Nothing groundbreaking, but if he played it in a set, the audience would definitely enjoy it. But it wasn't anything amazing. Good was where he started, why couldn't he get anywhere else? Just as he past the sheet music, a boy carrying books came and sat at the table. 'Er, yeah, sure.' He eyed the newcomer. 'You alright, man? Sounds like you're choking on gravel.' |

He asked her to look at the music, and Kiyoko was rather nervous. She could read it, kind of, but she wasn't particularly skilled at it. She had never taken a music theory class and cripes, she needed to study. Regardless, her politeness prevented her from refusing, and she pulled the piece of paper over to herself. Just then, someone else walked up. Kiyoko blinked, still whispering. "Oh. Harada-san." The two were acquaintances, as they were in the same year. She agreed with Joe's comment. "You don't sound quite right. Is something wrong?" She looked down at the music, playing it in her mind. It was... good? She shook her head. "It sounds pretty good to me. What are you asking me to do?" |

Now that he was closer, Kuzuki recognized the two of them. The girl was in the same year level as he was, although they were probably a section apart. The other one, the boy with the bleach-blond hair, was in the same class as him. From the way he had looked at the sheet of music before passing it on, he was probably studying for a test. Does Music class even have tests? Kuzuki wondered. For that matter, do we even have music class here? Oh, yeah. Right. They were asking him about his voice. He sincerely hoped he wasn't sick. Kuzuki cleared his throat. "Yeah, I'm fine, Watanabe-san. Just a bit tired, is all." He sat down and fumbled for his Math and Science books, taking out the flash cards inside them. "By the way," he said to the blond boy, "you're in the same class as I am, right? You look kinda familiar." Edited by Icarael, Apr 8 2012, 01:52 AM.

Joe sighed. That was about the reaction he had expected, also the one he didn't really want to hear. No one seemed to understand what he was going for. What was the point of writing music if you weren't trying to change the world somehow? 'Or, hell, maybe it's just me...' He muttered to himself. He smirked at Kiyoko. 'Nah, I just wanted a second opinion, maybe some suggestions. I might be overthinking it, I don't know. Maybe I'm messing around too much with time signatures...' He trailed off for a moment before shaking his head. 'Yeah, probably overthinking things.' Now that the boy mentioned it, Joe did recognize him from class. He was also pretty sure he saw him at one of those persona meetings, but that was hardly a surprise nowadays. 'Yeah, I think we are. The name's Kaburagi Joe, baddest rocker this side of the Pacific. And you're the VP of the school, right? Kazuki or something like that? What would someone of your stature want with a plebe like me,' he said jokingly. After a moment's thought, Joe slid some of the music over to Kuzuki. 'While you're here and not thumbing through books yet, think you can give me an opinion on this piece?' |

Harkens meanwhile was there to find a book that by all means he should have checked out long ago. Lugging it with him, he saw the nearest table and plopped it down. "Who knew a book on Freudian Psychology could be so dense?" He pulled up a chair only to find that the table was already occupied. "Erm, whoops. Sorry." Edited by Vect, Apr 9 2012, 04:34 AM.

Kiyoko frowned. "a bit" tired? Kuzuki sounded like he smoked a dozen packs a day, but Kiyoko didn't say much in regards to that. Still, she couldn't just not say anything. "Take care of yourself. Town's too dangerous these days to be sick or sleepy." Immediately, thoughts of Kyoishi came to mind. He should have been studying as well, but he was off... doing whatever he did. She shook her head. She'd find him later. They had the same class next. She turned back to the musician, who was apparently named Joe Kaburagi. Taking a look at the music again, (and not her textbook, dear lord she was going to fail) Kiyoko pursed her lips. "It is a complicated piece... maybe you are over-thinking it?" She glanced at Joe, unsure if she was being rude. "Music should come naturally... at least, that's what I hear. You should try and relax, I think." Someone else joined the table and Kiyoko sighed. "It's fine." Welp, she wouldn't be getting any actual studying done, it seemed. |
