Rio sat on a bench in the shopping center, listening to the canned music that played over the speakers. Directly in front of her were the windows of an electronics store, displaying a bank of televisions on which "My Neighbor Totoro" was being played.

She had gotten an orange soda from a nearby vendor, and watched, seemingly hypnotized by the visuals. Occasionally, she would slurp on the soda, and return to watching. She was thankful for the fact that the goggles obscured her eyes, because a trip to the bathroom had revealed that her irises had all but disappeared.

Of course, as her consciousness sizzled under the effects of the "fungal remedy" she had taken earlier, and her face was expressionless, eyes locked on the screens, her persona pulled information in to her skull. He muttered and hummed, weaving flows of information into a tapestry that was difficult to interpret, but somehow aesthetically pleasing.

She caught snatches of information that indicated the presence of nearby persona users, but she didn't bother to interpret the information.

There was a ninja in the window.

He almost seemed like a ninja statue, he was standing so still. Some of the other people passing by were noticing, but none stopped to really examine him. Mask Furai was standing in the window, striking a dramatic, almost shakespearian pose, one that was worthy of at least 7 oscars.

And he was looking right at Rio. It was hard to determine when he had appeared there, but it seemed as though he had been there for all of eternity. Of course, Rio was focusing a lot more on the televisions than him, so Furai just casually walked out of the store and tapped her on the side of the head.

"Oi. Ooooi."

Rio flinched when the man in the glow-in-the-dark ninja getup tapped the side of her head.

She looked at him, then back at Totoro, then back at him. Did he just come out of the television?

No, that was impossible. There's no way someone could come out of a television. They'd have to have been put in there to begin with, unless they were broadcast, or something. Or perhaps there was a whole other world behind the screen.

Nah. That was the drugs talking.

"What?" she said, by way of greeting.

He sighed. Kids these days. "You know, that's no way to greet your elder!" He paused. "... N-not to insinuate that I'm old. Because I'm not. At all." Kids these days. Always assuming things. Furai shook his head, getting onto the point.

"You, uh, you're that kid who helped with the german kidnapping crap, right? The administrator of that forum thing?" Being defender of the city was great and all, and he could easily take control over the minor riffraff and even a couple of ninja clans, but supernatural german kidnappers were a bit out of his league, at least in the information department.

So, he resorted to asking high school students. God, personae made everything complicated.

She was fixated on the screen. It had gotten to the part with the cat bus. The goddamned cat bus, which was awesome as all hell. And the ninja was still talking, insinuating that he wasn't old.

"Oh, sorry, ojiisan. Please don't ask me to bow, my balance isn't that good."

Narrowing her eyes, she scanned him, wondering what the results would be. She slurped on the soda, to cover the pause.

"Huh? Oh, yeah. I run the forum. I see that you're a ninja. Fascinating. There're things I've always wondered about ninja. Why don't you have a seat?"

Furai felt like smacking his helmet against the wall, but there was a time and place for that. "Don't call me Ojis - you know what, forget it, you kids can do what you want." He stood there for a moment, grumpy and annoyed like all old men ninjas, until Rio started talking again.

Her scan would reveal... mundane results. His arcana was that of the hanged man, and he had, rather predictably, lightning and wind spells. The wind spell was designed to push rather than to hurt, and there was a spell that served little purpose other than casting both a wind and a lighting spell at once. He resisted physical attacks and wind, but was weak to earth and water.

He paused for a moment before shrugging, casually taking a seat next to Rio. A small child pointed at him, and he waved, but the mother shooed the child away. Furai snorted. Kids. "And there're things I've always wondered about the germans." He decided to be polite. "Why don't you ask first?"

She glanced up at him, then back at the televisions. She'd slipped the employees at the shop 2,000 yen to play "Pinnochio", next, so like hell she was missing a second of any of this.

"Just normal stuff, mostly. Like how is your voice not muffled when you speak? I always thought those masks would make it difficult to understand what anyone was saying."

Hanged Man, eh? She wondered what that meant. Maybe she should ask him, but it would be impolite to ask him about that so quickly.

Then a thought occurred to her.

"Or is it just not on that tightly? Wouldn't that make your head look...shapeless."

She was getting really into the stuff on the television. Ever since starting his ninja life, Furai hadn't really had much time to relax and watch or read any kind of media. He took the rare chanced and watched Pinnochio along with Rio, not even glancing at her while they spoke. Or he was, and it was impossible to see under the mask. You couldn't really tell with a ninja.

He shrugged. "Ninja secret." As if to baffle her further, he made a small neck movement, and then spoke again. This time, his voice was muffled. "I can do this too, if I want." He adjusted his helmet, and was back to regular speaking volume.

Furai shrugged again. "Ninja secret." He couldn't tell her how tight, or not tight, the helmet was on. That'd be, like, cheating. Ninja cheating. "Any more questions, little lady?"

Of course, Rio didn't know much about ninja. That was, mostly, the whole point of the ninja lifestyle, she figured. The anonymity and secrets. Also clandestine assassinations. But that was beside the point. She wracked her mind, trying to figure out what to ask next.

Watching several dozen iterations of Pinnochio without sound was ruining her concentration, but she was enjoying it. She glanced over at him when he made the "little lady" comment. That was, if anything, more unpleasant than being called "Rio-chan."

"Is it true that the staff of the emperor's garden are ninja? I heard that somewhere, and it sounds strange enough to be true."

Furai paused. There was a question he wasn't expecting. He'd actually gone there, once. Infiltrated it, in fact. That had been a long, long, and very messy day. He hadn't expected to have to rescue so many rabbits, but hey, it ended well. Except for that one rabbit. That was the messy part. At least he'd gotten dinnner for another day.

He pursed his lips before remembering. "Only on weekends." Whether or not he was lying or being completely serious was completely up to Rio's imagination. "Chop chop, little lady. Hurry with the questions. I've got questions to ask and ninja things to do after this.
