Flames burned bright as Kumori placed a kettle over the open flame, coughing slightly at the fumes emitted from the tar-like shadow-stuff. He closed his eyes and sensed the air around him, nodding when he confirmed that the area was still safe. Time enough for tea.

"...Making tea with the remains of the slain? I'm surprised that it doesn't put a poor taste in your mouth."

"You again?" Kumori said, noting the sudden appearance. Judgment Arcanum, to be certain. Speaking in his own voice as well. "I apologize if it seems a bit barbaric to you. Using your own kind that way."

"You think I'm your shadow? I thought you already worked out those issues."

Kumori looked down at his veins, nodding when he saw the same black of the shadows coursing through his veins.

"That's right. I accepted my shadow. Then you are...?" Kumori trailed off, prompting an introduction.

"You know who I am. As for my name... I can't say. It's your journey of self-discovery. Your job to find me, not the other way around."

Kumori smiled, resisting the urge to look back.

"Good. You can hold yourself back."

"I wouldn't want to disappoint you."

He felt the pressure of a hand on his shoulder. The words held more weight now. The person standing behind him seemed more real. "Keep up the good work, then. I'm looking forward to the day that you find the truth. I wonder where your current path will take you. Longer shadows go with a strong light."

"Yeah..." Kumori stared down at the darkness spreading through his arm. His lip twitched into a smile. "Longer shadows."

The archery club's shooting range was not used very often. The actual team was small and the number of dedicated archers was even smaller, so the range was infrequently borrowed by other clubs for their own devices. However, Kumori was the only person in attendance at the moment.

He shot an arrow halfheartedly and sighed when it hit close to bull's-eye. About two centimeters away from his intended target. It could hardly be called an achievement now. It was child's play. There was no thrill behind it; targets never moved. He set his bow off to the side and tugged at a paper bag that he had brought along with him, pouring out its contents onto the floor. Purple pieces of wood, a good sixteen centimetres in length, collected from Fog Trees in the ruins and minimally processed.

Kumori picked up the pieces one at a time, imbuing them with some weight through basic Gry spells. Roughly weighted the same as throwing knifes. With precise flicks of the wrist, he sent them spiraling towards the target. After ten throws, he took stock. None of them hit as close as the arrow did. Some of them didn't hit the target at all.

Patience. Progress doesn't come in leaps.

I know.

He waved his hand to recall them, making use of the residual gravity magic in the sticks in conjunction with another Gry to bring them to his hand. Kumori swung his arm and grabbed them in one motion.

Treo made his way into the archery range, a full size bow around his shoulder. The Teen was dressed in full archery gear and got himself ready to fire. Noticing Kumori, he quickly fired the arrow he had drew back, scoring mere centimeters from the bullseye. He sucked his teeth. "You know, if I had used my gun, I probably would have made that."

Giving a small sigh he decided to postpone his practice for a moment, sitting back on the floor. "Kumori-san? This is quite rare. I haven't seen you outside of the ruins for a while. Are you practicing for something?" Treo sat on the hardwood floor and sighed, his bow resting in place next to his quiver. It could wait for now.

"I feel more driven to learn new things recently..."

"Ashdown-san," Kumori greeted his friend with a nod when he felt the presence of the wild card. He tossed one of his makeshift projectiles at Treo's target. A thunk accompanied the impact of wood against wood. The angle of impact was poor, causing the stick to merely glance off the lodged arrow.

"Practicing? I suppose so. It's been a bit troublesome to make my own arrows considering how labour-intensive the process is. I was thinking about more efficient alternatives.

"As for being in the ruins... I make a point not to miss school. The air in there is not the best in the world. And the captain should be dedicated to his club, no?"

Kumori set the wooden knives onto the floor and walked over to Treo. "It's good to learn new things. I've heard that you have joined the boxing team, but the archery club would always welcome a new member."

[Sorry, coming in late]
Michi was unhappy again. She was finding it harder to be happy lately, despite her carefree life. There were no problems (excluding the kidnapping and experimentation, but Midori had that under search by her American friend), and yet Michi was walking around the archery range. It wasn't spectacularly safe to do so without checking to see if any arrows were being shot, but that was why Michi walked there when she was upset.

She noticed two boys her age, probably older, in the range. Both had bows, but one seemed to be throwing short purple poles. Weird.

She blinked as she realized that she knew them. One was Kumori, one boy she met in the backstreets. The other was Treo, who had awakened in the Ruins with Michi. She felt glad to see another Persona user around.

I wish I could say something.

The Wildcard gave a smirk. "Well throwing knives are a bit different to arrows." He stood up again, drawing his bow, noticing Michi walking in. "Hargrave-san? Are you alright?" After letting his question settle he turned back to Kumori. "Throwing knives are used with your arm. A Bow has extra force behind it." Firing another arrow he pleased himself with a dead center shot.

Treo picked one of the throwing knives up, charging his hand with a Zan. The knife flew at high speed to the target, but missed the bullseye. "Course. You could always cheat." As Kumori mentioned that the Archery club would welcome a new member he grinned, scratching his head slightly. "Well Kumori-san if you'd have me, I'd love to. Boxing is on different days so I can cover both."

"I'm already quite good with arrows. The best around, you might say. But if you try to make your own arrows, you'll notice that they're very sensitive to how evenly weighted they are. Definitely doable, but a bit of a pain. Knife-throwing is a more spur-of-the-moment thing," Kumori said, picking up another knife and weighting it.

As he threw it, he spoke quietly, "...You can't cheat when you're silenced and surrounded by shadows, Ashdown-san. You might have noticed, given that one time when you and Kameko-san found me."

The knife hit Treo's arrow and knocked it out of its place in the center of the target. "That's why I practice. To make sure that I always have a backup."

Kumori picked up another one and began to twirl it experimentally. "Well, then. Welcome to the Archery Club. I'd introduce you to the other members, but they aren't here right now. I assume you know Hargrave-san."

He nodded towards the girl as he mentioned her name. "Not feeling too well?"

Shit, they saw me.

Michi jumped a little at being addressed directly. How many people called her Hargrave-san and actually looked at her when they said it? Not many, and frankly Michi wasn't used to people actually looking and speaking to her, much less speaking to her. She regained her composure quickly, trying to look like her normal self.

"And here I thought I was being sneaky. Not trying to spy on you two, just trying to avoid civilization in general."

That sounds absolutely stupid Michi, you're walking around the school grounds.

Treo nodded. "Weight of an arrow is a complex art. If its too light, the air will affect it too much, too heavy it won't fly far enough." His retort at the Teen's almost joking manner was met with a nod. "That's why I perfected fighting hand to hand. If they want to break my tools, I'll use the only thing they can't take."

Going back to his original point he lifted up one of the knives, balancing it on his finger. "What I was trying to say was arrows are affected by the force of the Bow itself. Your pullback on the string. A throwing knife..." He held the wooden stick in his hand, sharpened edge pinched between finger and thumb. Hurling the blade, it span towards the target, hitting the second ring. "Is affected by how you throw it."

Turning back to Michi he tilted his head. "Why do you want to avoid civilization? Did something happen?"

"A bit self-evident, but true," Kumori said, imitating Treo's movements as he flicked another one of the knives towards the target. He nodded when it hit close to where Treo's own knife was. With a snap, he called the thrown knives back, charging them back up with the gravity spell. He began to toss them again, slightly changing the course every time to try and work out the technique.

"...Let us know your problem, please. I'm sure we can work something out."

Michi felt a little left out, since she had nothing to add to their conversation.

...

Wait, what?

She shook her head. Left out? Why would she feel left out? She was avoiding people, so why would she want to be included in anything?

"It's nothing. I prefer staying alone, like usual."

Liar.
