Right then, firstly welcome to Nationstates, and congratulations on already taking the first step into the rabbit hole that is NS by talking to people, joining a player created region and visiting forums.

Nationstates was originally the brainchild of Max Barry, it was a publicity stunt for his book "Jennifer Government", however I dont think its wrong to say that 75% of players have never read or considered reading Jennifer Government.

In its most basic form NS is simply logging onto your nation and answering the issues. These determine whether you are a Democratic Socialist or a Pyschotic Dictatorship (with many other classifications as well). There are three classifications that your nation is judged on, "Political Freedoms", "Economy" and "Civil Liberties".

The World Assembly in its basic function does two main things.
-Acts as a "universal government" type institution. Any nation with two or more endorsments (we'll get onto them later) can propose a resolution. Each resolution needs 6% of all WA Delegates approval to reach the floor for a NS wide vote.
Whilst resolutions that are passed are technically binding for all WA nations, however in reality it makes no difference to how you play your nation with regards to the issues.

-Membership of the WA allows nations to endorse other nations, the nation in a region with the most endorsments holds the Delegate seat. The Delegate acts as the voice of the region in UN affairs, with the power to vote with as many endorsments as they recieve (therefore endorsing the Delegate greatens the regions voice).

A region is controlled from two points, the Founder, and the Delegate. If the Founder is deceased then the Delegate automatically has access to regional controls, if the Founder is still alive then they can choose whether to allow the Delegate access to the regional controls or not. The regional controls can do many things. Most notable of these are...
-Control of the World Factbook Entry (writing at top of the region)
-Whether the region is password protected or not
-Allows the ejection and banishment of member nations in the region

There are many levels to the game of NS, the simplist is answering the issues then logging off, and the most in depth takes over your entire life (seemingly) and makes you spend days upon end staring at a computer screen. Im personally somewhere in the middle and quite happy with it for the moment. Where the most enjoyment of NS comes from is through the player created offsite forums. These allow you to build a community in a region easier than simply using the regional message board (RMB). One can create governments for the region, organise foreign affairs, regional armys, have out of character debates and conversations and role play to your hearts content.

The other aspect of NS that draws people in are the "wars". I will only describe these briefly here. "Wars" are conducted between two broad groups, "Invaders" or "Raiders" and "Defenders". The raiders attempt to seize control of a region by taking the delegacy by force. They move in UN nations (usually close to game update - 7-10am GMT) and once in control of the regional controls they leave their mark. Defenders aim to stop them by supporting the native Delegate, or placing one of their own temporarily in power to eject the raiders.

Right....thats a lot of information for a new player to be taking in, my advice to increase knowledge is simply take the time to read through forums, talk to more experienced nations and give things a go. This is a game and is meant to be enjoyed!
