The Calculation of the Energy cost is quite simple really.

Energy is decresed by 4 factors.
- Damage the move does.
- The effort to move takes.
- Outside element interferance. (eg. boxes, rocks, spikes, etc.)
- Recoil Damage.

Energy is like hp, Oran berries restore a little energy. HP restoring items restore energy the more powerful they are, we cross out HP and replace it with energy. The 3 most common items that restore energy are Berries, Lemonade and Coffee, because caffine gives you energy. Others are things that have sugar in them. Potions restore energy, as does sleep.

Okay, so here is a basic calculation of energy loss.

:PKMN
:Energy : 50%
(Used Quick Attack)
against.

:PKMN2
:Energy : 50%
(Hid behind a sturdy wooden box)

Quick Attack is normal typed. So it does average damage against Mudkip the Water type. About 10-15% Energy.
The box was hit hard and made of sturdy wood, causing recoild damage at about 15-20% Energy.
Moving, depending on the power needed, costs 1-5% Energy. Spikes or anything that can harm a pokemon on the ground or around the feild, such as a ground type in the rain, raises this to 5-10% Energy.

So calculating the energy Riolu and Mudkip lost.

Riolu...
- Used Quick Attack (-3%)
- It hit a sturdy wooden box hard enough to break it (-20%)

Mudkip...
- Ran behind a box (-2%)

So Riolu should be about 27% Energy and Mudkip about 48%.
