Did some work on My Suzuki C50...; ....bike trip to Key West and Daytona...

So I am trying to get the bike ready for the bike trip to Key West and Daytona Beach Florida next month. I changed the oil today and swapped the stock handlebars and grips for something new... :)

The stock C50 bars were basically like beachcomber bars - they were very low-rise (6") and were very wide (36") which would make my shoulders ache after long rides. So I swapped them today for a new Z-bar style apehanger. Its got 10" of rise and is only 30" wide. Much more comfy for me. I was afraid that the 12" rise would've been too tall and require new cables and brake line, so I opted for the safe 10" one. I also installed some gel-filled rubber grips. They are gray which matches the bike and the little gel pockets all over the grips are in the shape of small skulls - so that was cool too. :)

The ride is sooooo much nicer now. I was able to mount my drink holder on the handlebar and also installed some hardbags. The hardbags I got about a week after Achie got his first pair. I got the same ones (the smaller ones) in silver and opted not to hook up the lights. I'm not liking them much - never been much of a "bagger-guy". But - for the purpose I need - it works.

When I get back from the trip next month - I am finally getting to do some work on the C50 in ways of customizing. I intend to make full dresser fenders (similar to the old Indian Chief fenders) and repaint the bike. I'll ditch the saddlebags at that time and just run with a magnetic tank bag instead.

Tomorrow I am installing a 12 volt socket so I can charge my cell phone during the big ride and power the air compressor I bought as an emergency.

I took pictures but I need to buy a cable in order to download tehm from my new camera. SO be patient... :HAPPYRIDER: [redit]added discription to title....[/redit]

I ditched the stock windshield the day I bought the bike. I swapped the handlebars for 10" z-bars, new grips, Mutazu LN hardbags, sissybar, alarm system, 12 volt socket, and a chrome drink holder :)

Looks good Dave. Buddy of mine has a C50T. Bags are a GREAT convenience.... but.... OK, I took mine off again. I can't help it. Looks so much better without. I think that's why I need 2 bikes. 1 commuter and 1 for looks and enjoyment. :SIGH: someday. Seirously though the bags and the bars look great. Too bad you ditched the windshield though. (you may ride through a few patches of those pesky bugs on your trip... I'll have the garden hose and soap bucket ready! :LOL )

Looking pretty sharp Dave. And somehow in silver/grey those cases don't look like the back-end of a Buick either. :HANDCLAP: :HANDCLAP: :HANDCLAP:

haha - I have sworn myself to never ride with a windshield on my bikes. Never found one that looked ok to me - on any bike. Just me.

As for the bags - when i sold the ratbike chopper and bought this bike it was so the wife and i could ride together. Since that was the argument I used to buy another bike, I was saddled with the "this is the daily driver - you have other bikes to customize" so this once has had to remain stock since I bought it in January. 3,000 miles later and I am starting to change things, but have to come up with reasons... the bars made my hands go numb and hurt - so I bought new bars. new bars = new grips. Had to have the rechargeability for my cell phone on the long trip next month - so i got to install the bags and 12 volt outlet. Alarm to keep the bike from getting messed with, etc...

When I get back from the trip tho - I will have added several thousand miles in 8 days of riding and I intend to make the fenders I want and then repaint it. No excuses - I just want to - I figure I ride the thing everyday practically - I should have something more "me". bwhahahaha

and as far as the lovebugs - holy crap - I made a run to pensacola from Mobile during my lunch break wednesday (office got together for a lotto run) - I had the best gas milage and it was a beautiful day - so off I went. 124 miles in 2 hours with a 30 minute wait at the lotto station. I hit so many bugs I couldnt see thru the helmet's visor. haha.

I had passed a douche bag on a $30,000 chopper, a half shell skid lid and tshirt on the interstate. As I passed him in my jacket, bagger, and fullface helmet - he sort of gave me a grunt like "sissy". 2 minutes later we hit a wall of lovebugs - my jacket is permanently stained with remains and my helmet required a good scrubbing. That dumbass - hahahaha... true justice :)

 That is why I can't knock the functionality of a shield. No, I don't like the way they look either, buuuuuut...

I've observed something about love bugs. If you're on the road any other time except between 10 and 2, you're ok. If you ride in that time frame you will be pelted.
