Queensland Transport says a zero blood alcohol limit for motorcyclists is one option being considered as authorities look at ways to reduce the road toll.

Motorcyclists are about 30 times more likely to die on the state's roads than other drivers.

A spokesman for Queensland Transport says there would need to be extensive consultation before any alcohol ban was introduced for motorcyclists.

The Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson says 54 riders and pillion passengers have been killed on Queensland roads this year compared with 28 five years ago.

"Motorcycles represent only 4.5 per cent of the vehicles on Queensland roads but 22 per cent of the fatalities," he said.

Other options being considered include a minimum clothing standard for riders, and electronic devices so motorcyclists can be identified by speed cameras.

The state's peak motoring body says something radical needs to happen to reduce the high rate of motorcycle deaths.

The RACQ's Gary Fites says more changes are welcome.

"Whether that be a reduction in the alcohol limit or perhaps a stronger enforcement of the current 0.05 limit - which in global terms is a pretty low limit," Mr Fites said.

"I think you wouldn't rule out the option of raising the profile of enforcement - not just for motorcyclists but across the board for all road users."
