The Sumo EX-V7 - just one glimpse of a future motorcycle.

A Hybrid electro-magnetic motorcycle. Don’t get confused by the Hybrid part – it’s not like a Toyota Prius. It is entirely electric. The Hybrid terminology in this case means that the drive motor is a hybrid of technologies. There is no mechanical drive system to turn the wheels. Huh?

When you take two magnets and put their North poles together, they oppose each other, right? And if you rotate one of the magnets so you have the North-South poles facing each other, then they attract. Imagine if you had permanent magnets in a wheel and then you were able to electrically alternate the magnetic polarity of a fixed point on a motorcycle’s frame next to that wheel. You could induce wheel rotation. This is, in fact, how the linear induction motors work on those Magnetic Levitation (Maglev) trains in Europe and Asia.

You are beginning to understand how the Sumo works, even though it’s more advanced than that. The motor is inside the hub of the rear wheel and that is where the alternating of the magnets takes place. The outer ring of the wheel has the permanent magnets. By alternating the polarity of the motor’s magnets, the wheel turns. No chain, no shaft, no belt, no friction and no noise.

As if the motor drive system wasn’t enough, even the styling and riding position is borderline revolutionary, though it does bear some similarities to the old Honda Helix.

Like I said about the Zero, you may not like the Sumo and I may never buy one, but it is an interesting glimpse into the future of motorcycles. I predict there will be a market for it and one day it will occupy a recognizable portion of the motorcycle landscape. All they need to do is get it featured in a movie….. sort of a Star Wars meets Wild Hogs.
