Preview: 2010 Honda DN-01
Monster scooter
Posted Image

There seems to be a trend among manufacturers to design motorcycles for people who don't really like them.

No, I'm not crazy, nor is this another of my strange double entendres that will turn out to be more obscure than edifying. I'm simply stating a fact --purveyors of recreational motor vehicles are struggling to appeal to a broader audience by designing vehicles for people who otherwise wouldn't be caught dead on a motorcycle.

The first inkling of this trend was the rash of ginormous scooters that have hit our shores. Once the purview of 50-cubic-centimetre bumblebees, the scooter has recently grown into small-wheeled, 650-cc rocketships. Though technically still scooters -- retaining the traditional step-through seating and some form of automatic transmission -- they boast motorcycle-like performance. But, for the end user, they give the illusion of being easier to ride.

Taking things a dramatic step further, Bombardier recently took the wraps off its Spyder trike. Basically the rear of a motorcycle grafted on to the front of an ATV, the Spyder purports to allay that greatest of non-motorcyclist fears -- that it might fall over. Never mind that any three-wheeled cycle with such a high centre of gravity is far more unstable than a motorcycle, it feels safe when you're sitting on it in a dealership. And that's its primary sales feature -- to a clientele who wants the image of motorcycling but none of its hassle.

It's no surprise, then, that Honda, the world's largest manufacturer of two-wheelers, wants in on this nontraditional crowd. This is, after all, the "you meet the nicest people" company that virtually invented the concept of motorcycling as a mass-market pastime. Now it wants to broaden those horizons further, and it sees a niche smack dab between the loafer-wearing scooter crowd and those preening, leather-shod bikers.

Its solution is the DN-01 ($17,499). While it looks like a motorcycle (well, sort of ), it feels like a scooter, albeit a full-sized one. For instance, the seating position -- though the frame is not a scooter-like stepthrough-- is pure, easy-to-live-with scooter. The floorboards tilt at the same angle, the handlebar is all sit-up-and-beg and the low, low seat and its large rearward hump could be right off Honda's Silver Wing.

On the other hand, it has a real engine, in this case a 680-cc, eight-valve V-twin not unlike those powering many of the company's cruisers. It rides on normal 17-inch wheels rather than scooter-ish 12-inchers and 14-inchers. In fact, the DN-01's tires are sized almost identically to some of the most popular superbikes -- 190/50-17 at the rear and 130/70-17 up front. As well, there's an actual telescopic front fork up front and a well-damped single-shock rear suspension.

But, then again, it rides like a scooter. It has something called a Honda Friendly Transmission (HFT), the appellation just another one of those silly acronyms that's supposed to convince us that something terribly complicated is really not that threatening at all. Well, the HFT may be complex in its construction, but, as it has an automatic transmission, it's a doddle to use. Start up the Vtwin, then push a D (for Drive) button and the DN-01 is ready for takeoff. There's a sport mode as well that keeps the engine revving higher for greater acceleration. If you insist, you can toggle through six gears. But if you do, it's simply for your own gratification as the acceleration is little enhanced.

Said acceleration feels very much akin to that of a middleweight cruiser, not surprising considering its engine and all-up weight of 270 kilograms. It's hardly superbike-like, but, on the other hand, it's hardly embarrassing either. Ditto the handling, which is restricted more by middling ground clearance than any lack of ability in corner carving. The same also applies to the braking, as the dual front discs and single rear (all controlled by a sophisticated anti-lock braking system) is more than a match for the DN-01's speed. And, in the interests of all those nontraditional bikers, both the right-side foot brake and the handlebar-mounted lever activate both front and rear brakes.

The DN-01's downsides fall into two categories. The first is its unattractiveness to traditional motorcyclists. All those easy-to-ride scooter features -- automatic tranny, floorboards, etc. -- are a turnoff to dyed-in-the-wool traditional bikers. Besides, the DN-01's styling is so Back to the Future (sort of what a 1950s designer might have envisioned the 21st century to look like) that it's unlikely to attract many current bikers.

As for the non-traditional audience Honda hopes to capture, the DN-01's only failing is that penning the aforementioned bullet-like shape results in a very low windscreen. Considering its comfy ride and high-speed abilities, a little more weather protection would be welcome.

That's unlikely to be a deciding factor for the DN-01's success, however. Honda has taken a bold step outside the traditional motorcycling boundaries. While I'll be the first to admit that the DN-01 is not for hoary old me, the crowd that surrounded it at a recent motorcycle show in Toronto says this design will find a new audience.

Counterfeit Honda scooters attacking domestic market
17:38' 19/05/2009 (GMT+7)
VietNamNet Bridge – Counterfeit Honda scooter models are being sold openly in both Hanoi and HCM City for an average of VND16 million. The surprisingly low prices have lured customers, even though they know they are counterfeit.

The designs and colours of the counterfeit Honda scooter models (Spacy, SCR, Air Blade) are not really different than the real products being sold on the market for VND40-100 million. The scooters are advertised as having parts imported from Taiwan and assembled in Vietnam.

The products prove to be more attractive as the sellers offer a 3-year maintenance warranty and promise to send staffs to fix problems if the scooters break down. Buyers will get new scooters from sellers if the products they purchase turn out to have technical problems.

The counterfeit Honda scooters have flocked to HCM City. A rented flat at Lam Son residential quarter on Nguyen Oanh road in Go Vap district in HCM City has been advertised as a sales agent of the cheap scooters.

The sales agent has advertised in newspapers that it sells a counterfeit Honda Air Blade at VND42 million, a Victoria VND9 million, and Nouvo Yamaha VND6 million.

In a statement released on May 13, Honda Vietnam affirmed that a shop at No 135 Nguyen Tuan purporting to be a dealer does not belong to the system of Honda authorised sales agents.

Koji Onishi, General Director of Honda Vietnam, said that in Vietnam, only Honda Vietnam is authorised by Japan’s Honda to make Honda motorbikes. All products made by Honda Vietnam are distributed through its system of authorised dealers.

He said that Honda Vietnam will work with Japanese Honda Motor and legal agencies on measures to prevent the copyright infringement in case a third party assembles scooters, imitating the Honda brand name.

Trinh Ngoc Giao, Head of the Vietnam Registration Administration, affirmed that no counterfeit Honda scooters have got certificates from the agency.

According to Hoang Cong Son, Deputy Head of the 3A Market Management Team under the HCM City Market Management Taskforce, the resolution of the case of the counterfeit goods needs to follow procedures. The company which owns the trademarks which are being imitated needs to send documents to violators, asking them to stop the violations. If the violators refuse to do that, the company can file a claim with the Market Management Taskforce, police and inspection agencies. Only after receiving claims can relevant agencies investigate.

SPIED: 2010 Honda VFR1200
No racer-rep, the new model will be a supersport-touring V-4!

www.motorcyclistonline.com
By Aaron Frank[size=5
These are the first-ever photographs of the long-awaited, next-generation Honda VFR, shown here undergoing hot-weather testing at an undisclosed location in the American Southwest.

Posted Image

Continuing its evolution as an all-around, GT-style sport-touring machine (rather than an aggressive, MotoGP-derived race replica, as earlier rumors hinted), this new-from-the-rims-up VFR looks bigger and brawnier than ever before. This suggests a return to CBR1100XX Blackbird-level speed and stamina, capable of challenging the BMW K1300S, Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa and Kawasaki ZX-14 for the supersport-touring crown.

Styling closely resembles the radical V-4 concept displayed at the Intermot Show in Cologne, Germany, last fall, with similar floating fairing sidepanels that envelope the back of the front wheel, presumably to help with both aerodynamics and engine cooling. A single, X-shaped multi-reflector headlamp rests between two cold-air intakes, and a tall, broad upper fairing looks like it will provide plenty of protection from the elements. The rear subframe is substantial, both for supporting a passenger and, most likely, accessory luggage. The VFR's signature single-sided swingarm remains, but chain final drive has been ousted in favor of a shaft, further reinforcing the sport-touring nature of this new machine.

Main frame spars are massive and near-horizontal, indicating chassis stiffness in line with big horsepower (rumored to be as much as 200 at the crank) and a low center of gravity for reasonable handling. There are few firm details about the engine, but it is strongly rumored to incorporate a sophisticated, variable-cylinder operation system capable of deactivating one bank of cylinders in low-load situations to increase fuel economy and lower emissions. Expect a version of Honda's Combined Anti-lock Brake System, and possibly some form of traction control, too. Note this test mule has conventional clutch and shift levers, so this model apparently will not feature DN-01-derived semi-automatic shifting as standard, though it might be available as an option.

It's been more than eight years since the venerable VFR received its last significant update, making this makeover long overdue. We've also heard rumors of an ST1300 replacement and BMW GS-style mega-enduro based on this same platform. Expect the final production version of the VFR1200-and perhaps more concrete details on other new models-to make its official debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in October.[/size]

Press release:

Honda’s First Factory Chopper Destined for UK

Honda (UK) Motorcycles has announced an exciting and new V-twin custom model – the radical Honda VT1300CX – to the UK for 2010.

For many years the chopper motorcycle has summed-up a particular breed and passion of two-wheeled cool. Many are home-built machines - some made to quite basic specifications. But with the VT1300CX you can have all the presence and pose of a chopper, but with the reassurance of Honda’s enviable style and build quality.

The VT1300CX is a whole new breed of cruiser, showing Honda’s wild side and playing on the popular chopper genre. The machine is powered by a 1312cc 52-degree fuel-injected V-twin found in the popular VTX1300 machine, but featuring re-profiled camshafts and a new exhaust system. The single-pin crank gives the bike a unique sound which growls through the machine’s twin stacked pipes. Meanwhile, the radiators for the liquid-cooled machine are neatly tucked out of sight for a more ‘traditional’ look. It also boasts a new programmed fuel injection system, further contributing to the impressively low fuel consumption of 56.5mpg*.

For cruisers and choppers, style is king and the head-turning looks, coupled with great attention to detail of the VT1300CX, are a milestone. The overall classic profile accentuates the whole chopper look. This is thanks to the widely-raked front forks, the small, high-set 12.8-litre fuel tank which sits behind the single chrome headlight, down to the striking nine-spoke front and seven spoke rear wheels. Dominating the mid-section is the punchy V-twin motor, while the slim front tyre is exaggerated by the fat and wider rear tyre. The whole look is completed with a ‘hard-tail’ look rear-end and an LED tail-light.

The long, low chassis is lean with its stretched-out wheel base and sleek lines, which cloak a single shock rear suspension system with an aluminium swing arm and adjustable rebound and preload adjustment. This combination provides riding comfort that’s far above the norm for a chopper.

The VT1300CX – with its great package of looks, sound and feel – is effectively Honda’s first factory-finished chopper and has the longest wheelbase of any production Honda ever – a full 1805mm between both axles. But, despite this and its radical looks, it’s still a Honda, which means the ultimate in performance and poise as well as good fuel economy, with fun and easy of riding and assured handling.

For customers who want to add an individual touch to their VT1300CX and make it even more unique, a range of accessories will be available to include:

A tubular chrome backrest and optional backrest pad for pillion comfort
A wide, low screen with chrome stars for protection from the elements when cruising the streets
Colour-matched front spoiler for increased custom appearance
Chrome-plated steel rear fender to complete the solo-seat look

The VT1300CX will be available in two colours – the striking glint blue wave metallic provides an eye-catching option, while the graphite black accentuates its extravagant styling. The price of this new model will be announced later in the year.

For further information about any of Honda’s great range of scooters, off-road machines or road bikes, genuine parts, accessories, latest offers and forthcoming events, visit your local dealer who can be found using the ‘Dealer Search’ facility within the motorcycles section of www.honda.co.uk or by calling 0845 200 8000.
