I have not stopped by the Temecula Dealership lately...they are closed by the time I get off work, but I will check and see if they have it in the showroom - they are at least available for ordering.

that bike is massive - so very long. great look though, especially from the front. Obviously I didn't get to actually ride one so have no idea how it behaves. Also, they had the demo bike bolted upright to the floor so you could not get any idea of how heavy they feel.

I gathered that the rocker switch on the right grip housing is the auto/manual select, the grey rocker on the left grip housing is the +/- "tiptronic" shifter.[redit][/redit]

Honda has announced that it is to build its radical-looking V4 motorcycle for the road, or at least a version of it maybe more suited to the road, ready to go by 2010.

And when it does, will it owe more to the current technical innovations seen on the MotoGP grid or the technological flag-waving and chest-beating of white-coated boffins deep in the heart of Honda HQ?

Because one will certainly be used to justify any continued spending in the elite class of racing, while the other will be hard to account for in these globally cash-strapped times.

The V4 we've seen this winter being shown off at the big motorcycle shows (Cologne, Milan and the others) is a weird-looking thing. Yes, it's undoubtedly trick and very pretty, but it looks as far removed from a conventional racing motorcycle (like... Dani Pedrosa's factory motorcycle, for instance) and the average rubbish bin.

So does this bike signal the end of the modern link between MotoGP and what we're riding on the street? Was the last great batch of innovations learnt in the cut and thrust of racing really to be found on the Yamaha R6 with its fly-by-wire throttle system lifted almost directly off Valentino Rossi's M1 racebike?

If so, then what are the reasons for pushing the V4? If Honda is doing it because it can make a motorcycle have better fuel economy and smoother, more refined power deliveries then why are we restricting what happens with the motorcycles that race out on track at all.

If there's the idea that the MotoGP bikes are moving further and further away from way we ride on the street (instead of being this much promoted future-birthplace to what we can have in our garage right now)then why don't we just let the engineers have their free run in the premier class?

Originally, the reduction in engine size was meant to be for safety reasons, before that the switch to four-strokes was meant to help (among other things) cut down the amount of crunching highsides so common in the premier class.

But we're still getting crashes. It's still a world of MotoGP racing where highsides happen and riders lose the front going into a corner. So what's the benefit of going from two to four-strokes, of going from 990 to 800cc? It can't really be cost because the 800s are as expensive to build and run as the 500s ever were.

So now, with Honda punting the V4 idea forward for the road as an ideal road bike, maybe we could just all stop this pretence that MotoGP gives us huge strides forward and benefits us on the road. If we as a motorcycling world accept that we get lots of development via the World Superbike Championship and that the MotoGP boys really should just stay as the prototype class then let's have the rules lifted and let the elite riders and engineers go nuts.

It'd be great to see what they come up with.

New Honda chopper, Fury, making waves

“The Fury opens the door to the most extreme level of custom looks,” the company said at the unveiling. “But once you’re rolling, the Fury experience is all about that special bond between rider and machine: the unmistakable big V-twin pulse, the characteristic Vee engine note and the no-nonsense riding stance bring you back to the core elements of riding.”

The bike will be available in March or April and will retail for “around $13,000, according to Bill Savino, manager of motorcycle press at American Honda.

“The reaction from media and consumers alike has been great,” said Savino, who did the introduction at the show.

And although he hasn’t had the chance to ride it himself, Savino said that the company’s test riders have said that “the neat thing about the motorcycle is it gives you that sense of going back: It’s simple; it works; and it handles well.”

He also pointed out that for those who want to customize the bike, Honda will offer an array of accessories for doing so, and outside companies such as Cobra are already “making chrome goodies for it.”

What remains to be seen is whether motorcycling enthusiasts embrace a chopper made by Honda, or merely consider it a poseur. Honda, for one, isn’t too concerned about the latter being an issue, or its relevance in the current marketplace.

“You always have the naysayers,” Savino said, “but the funny thing is, what we’ve heard the most, is, ‘Why (make) a chopper now? It died off five years ago.’

“We don’t believe that. We believe the chopper market in the $20,000 to $30,000 range has tapered off. But a chopper has never been made by a major manufacturer and it’s never been made at a reasonable price. There is this younger generation that has a CBR600 or 1000 in their garage and wanted a weekend cruiser. Now we are giving them something to go after.”
