First ride: The return of the Yamaha XJ6 Diversion
MCN REVIEW

Senior Road Tester, Michael Neeves is in Sydney, at the world launch of Yamaha’s new XJ6 Diversion and the naked XJ6, here are his first impressions:

“The new XJ6 Diversion slots in under the Fazer as Yamaha’s entry level, new-rider-friendly all-rounder. Although it carries an old name, it’s a new bike from the ground-up, featuring a tubular steel frame, a snazzy underslung exhaust and a detuned version (by 20bhp) of the in-line-four-cylinder engine you’ll find in the current FZ6 Fazer, which in turn is an old-school R6 lump.

“Riding it through the busy city streets of Sydney and ridden hard out on twisty outback roads inland, the Diversion is superb mix of practicality and fun. It’s comfy, has good wind protection, is agile and will turn in a serious turn of speed when you fancy it. It’s less peaky and buzzy than the FZ6 Fazer and there’s more power at lower revs, which makes it just as fast in all but the most extreme conditions.

“Chassis and suspension are basic, but the XJ6

Yamaha patents turbodiesel motorcycle engine

Yamaha appears to be developing an inline-four intercooled and turbocharged diesel engine, filing a patent application for various technological solutions related to such an engine. Foremost among those solutions appears to be an intercooler located above the engine or concealed in the frame and a turbocharger mounted adjacent to the cylinder head. Such an arrangement would make the turbocharger and intercooler less vulnerable to damage, reduce turbo lag and improve packaging for a more compact design.

While this patent application doesn't indicate that such an engine is destined for a production bike, it does provide a sneak peak into the kind of technology Yamaha is researching. The entire application is embedded HERE and despite being a bit arduous to read, it's full of fascinating ideas.

By Basem Wasef,
Yamaha Star VMAX Accessories: Shy Need not Apply
Wednesday July 15, 2009
Star Custom Accessories apparently understands the excess-prone personalities of VMAX buyers, as evidenced by their new aftermarket rear wheel which allows for tires as thick as 240 mm-- coincidentally, the same rubber thickness found at the rear of Harley's V-Rod Muscle, Suzuki's M109R power cruiser, and the front of the custom Intel/OCC Chopper. Yamaha's $769.95 accessory wheel requires a $75.95 bearing kit, and according to the manufacturer is for "closed course use only." Yeah, right.

Also available for the power-hungry, VMAX-buying general public are CNC machined billet aluminum bits by Jeff Palhegyi, which were first seen on this tricked-out show bike that happens to be wearing over $11,000 of custom parts. Among the black anodized and reverse cut pieces are cam shaft covers, swing arm pivot covers, clutch and crankcase covers, and exhaust tips. Each are sold separately, and priced between $57.95 and $549.95
