:PIWYR: Electrifying Motorcycles

A Tesla refugee is building an all-electric superbike. Can it be a business, too?

Hogs roar. Ninjas scream. The Mission One just flies.

A fledgling San Francisco company called Mission Motors unveiled an all-electric motorcycle Wednesday at the TED conference in Long Beach, Calif. Called Mission One and designed by hotshot Yves Behar and his firm, fuseproject, the bike is both beautiful and fast. At a top speed of 150 miles per hour, it would be the fastest production electric vehicle of any type.

If, that is, it gets to production.

Mission Motors was founded in 2007 by a bunch of smart Silicon Valley types with the hope that they can take on heavy industry and change it. If this sounds familiar, it's because this has been the mission of Tesla Motors, the electric car maker founded by PayPal founder Elon Musk.

Tesla has found the road bumpy. It has struggled to turn a technically cool idea into a business: Its management has been in disarray. The car launch was delayed several times. Tesla also recently laid off 20% of its workforce and raised more money.

Mission Motors' founder, Forrest North, understands these problems in detail: He started Mission a few months after leaving Tesla, where he helped engineer battery packs. But North is not at all daunted.

North says that because motorcycles are far more simple than automobiles, Mission Motors won't get bogged down like Tesla has. Its staff will stay small and nimble: It has a staff of about 12 right now. His engineers' "to do" list will also be shorter than the one at Tesla, North insists, as manufacturing bikes doesn't involve as extensive assembly lines as the auto industry. Bikes are less complex than cars and made in smaller volumes.

:OLD: Larry there might be a market for pipes that make motor noise for those. Then people might like them better and feel more natural on them. Like maybe small mp3 players in the pipe.

MISSION MOTORS WEBSITE HERE

FEATURES

  • 100% Torque without Shifting
On a motorcycle, torque is a visceral feeling. It is the rush of powering out of a curve with your knee sliding on the ground. It is the pull in your gut when you are coming off the line at full throttle. On gasoline bikes, torque means shifting gears, matching speeds, and dropping the clutch. On the Mission One, there is no clutch. There are no gears. There is just 100 foot-pounds of torque, available anywhere between 0 and 60 mph. >>

  • Top Line Components
We have complimented our groundbreaking powertrain with the best components money can buy. The Mission One is a superbike in all aspects of the word. The 2010 model comes equipped with: Ohlins inverted front forks, 43mm TiN coated tubes, Ohlins fully adjustable shock, Brembo 4 piston monobloc calipers, Marchesini wheels, and race compound tires.

  • Regenerative Braking
The Mission One recaptures the kinetic energy of the motorcycle during braking and turns it into electrical energy stored in the batteries. By recapturing energy, the Mission One goes further on a single charge. The Mission One also allows riders to tune their regenerative braking to fit with their riding style.

  • Recharge Anywhere
The Mission One's onboard charger allows riders to recharge from any standard wall socket. Recharging from empty to full takes 2.5 hours off of a 220V outlet (8 hours off of a 110V). In California, which has the 11th highest electricity prices in the US, "filling up" your bike only costs you $1.96.

  • Real Time Data Acquisition
The Mission One's data acquisition feature allows riders to capture ride data in real time. Riders can record ride data, such as speed, location, or lean angle; or bike data, such as motor current, battery voltage, or efficiency. Riders can take that data to their computer to analyze their performance, brag to other riders, or prepare for their next ride.

  • Wireless Enabled
The Mission One is the first wireless enabled motorcycle. It introduces riders to a new way of connecting to their motorcycle. When going to work on their bike, a Mission One rider will take a computer more often than a wrench. Riders will be able to download ride data, check bike status, and update bike settings in a matter of seconds through a seamless user interface.

  • Low Maintenance Costs
The Mission One lacks a combustion engine. That means no oil changes, no gaskets, no timing belts, no valve replacements, or spark plugs. The list goes on. The Mission One powertrain will cost less to maintain than any comparable gasoline sportbike. The battery pack on the Mission One is modular, allowing for individual sections to be replaced if they fail.

Mission One's Jeremy Cleland talks to Gizmag from the Isle of Man TTX electric motorcycle race

Entrants in the TTX Electric Superbike GP have laid some of their cards on the table at the Isle of Man - but according to Mission One's Jeremy Cleland, the first TTX practice session was all about safely making it around the track and recording battery capacity data - race pace, he says, will be significantly faster. We spoke to Cleland just before the second TTX practice session at the historic Isle of Man TT circuit - hear his thoughts on the Mission One bike, the TTX races, the future of electric racebikes and the challenges of racing in this new category in our exclusive audio interview after the jump.

Jeremy Cleland is product manager for Mission One, an ex-racer and in charge of the Mission One team at the TTXGP. In our audio interview he discusses:

Setting up and adjusting an electric racebike
The balance of speed and battery conservation that dominates setup and race practice
The Alpinestars datalogging system mounted in rider Tom Montano's leathers
The Mission One racebike's adjustable regenerative braking system
How the electric bikes are being accepted at the Isle Of Man event
The historic nature - and exciting future - of electric roadracing, including shorter circuit racing
Team AGNI's impressive showing in practice session 1
Progress on the Mission One roadbike

Mission One Motorcycle
by Yves Behar

Unveiled at TED 2009, the Mission One EV Motorcycle was designed as a collaboration between designer Yves Béhar of fuseproject, and Forrest North, CEO of Mission Motors.
Posted Image
The motorcycle is significant in that it’s 100% electric and has a top speed of 150mph with a range of 150 miles. Not to mention it looks like sex on two wheels.

“This project was a dream come true: a statement about how design can make performance and sustainability come together without compromise,” said Yves Béhar. “I believe Mission is an icon for a new era of efficient and exciting vehicles. Designed to express speed and efficiency in it’s overall sharp lines, the Mission bike is also highly detailed with special attention to a riders needs, bringing a high level of product design and ergonomics to a new generation of performance transportation.”

This bike’s is remarkable in that it dwarfs any electric bike on the market both in speed and range, making it much more usable to the average person. See more information and photos after the jump.

This is the first project for Mission Motors, and if they can sell these things, there’s sure to be more exciting projects on the horizon. Why ‘if’ you ask?

Mission Motors is taking $5,000 deposits on bikes which have a starting price just under $69,000.

That’s not exactly cheap, making this sort of the Tesla Roadster of the sport bike world. As with the Tesla and other early electric vehicles, early models are expensive but tend to lead to cheaper, more mainstream products down the road. I look forward to seeing what else Mission has up its sleeve.
