Xero is a hero of green transport

IT is a sign that green transport is finally going from clunky to funky.
While motor manufacturers race to come up with clever alternatives to the petrol engine this cool looking eco scooter will hit the market this month.

For a long time electric vehicles have all the appeal of a milk float, but along with its classic styling the new Xero scooter certainly has curb appeal.

It also has another big advantage - the price. At £1,499 it's a big hint that the electric scooter market might be the first to embrace mass market petrol free motoring.

Being electric, the Xero's makers also boast that you won't be paying for road tax, congestion charge and if you're lucky even parking in larger cities.

The 1000w motor is neatly hidden away in the hub of the rear wheel and it's powered by lead gel silicon batttery.

Meanwhile charging it up is just as easy as charging your phone. A cable under the seat plugs into a household socket at one end and a socket in the footwell at the other.

The Xero comes in two designs Classic (above) or the Urban, which has a slightly smaller battery. Best of all because it barely makes a sound which will startle pedestrians and cyclists alike

But before we get completely carried away - don't forget electric motoring is still emerging and you will quickly discover that you are making some big sacrifices on the road.

While it is claimed this has the same power as a 50cc bike, our road test showed the Xero to be painfully slow pulling away from traffic lights, which led to that cringe making feeling of pulling over to the left to let faster traffic behind you come past.

The scooter is speed limited to 30 mph and does feel underpowered and short of the extra zip you want to feel truly safe on a busy road.

The range of 50 miles is about half what you would expect from the equivalent petrol engine and means you will glance at the power gauge slightly more anxiously than you would otherwise.

The upside is easy though. You'll be surfing the forefront of a new motoring wave and can leave the showroom happy in the knowledge that you will never visit a petrol station again.

The Xero isn't yet about to become a motoring hero - but you can't help feeling it's a very brave attempt.
