>WEB SITES 6 VIDEOS <

-- Zero Motorcycles, the leading electric motorcycle manufacturer, plans to announce at this year's Alternative Energy and Transportation Expo (Alt Car Expo) that the company's 2008 Zero X electric motorcycle has sold out. This success is a landmark moment for the electric vehicle and green movement. For the first time a vehicle with a 'light footprint' has blazed a discernable new path. Adding to the excitement is the world debut of Zero Motorcycles' 2009 Zero X. Zero will be displaying the pre-production model of its all-electric dirt bike at Alt Car in Santa Monica, California, on September 26-27th. In addition to the exclusive preview, media and interested consumers are invited to demo the 08 Zero X at the event.

The 08 Zero X exceeded all expectations for the first American-Made dirt bike and the 09 is already doing the same. Even before the announcement, the company has hundreds of people waiting for the next model. Fortunately, they will not have to wait long. The 09 Zero X will ship next month, October 2008.

"Zero Motorcycles is excited to unveil the 09 Zero X pre-production model at the Alt Car Expo because it's the perfect venue to share our products' evolution," said Neal Saiki, inventor and founder of Zero Motorcycles. "After the hugely successful launch of the 08 Zero X dirt bike, we challenged many of our current customers and industry experts to suggest ways to make it even better. All of this culminated with the latest upgrades reflected in our 09 version."
This latest iteration of the Zero X is designed to be stronger, faster, and more durable in the most demanding terrain. Improvements start with a beefier drivetrain and work their way out from there. To handle the more aggressive riding opportunities that the 09 Zero X opens up, they have made upgrades to the brakes, handlebars, front and rear suspension, rear wheel and more.

The Zero X Electric Motorcycle is a no-compromise dirt bike that utilizes lithium-ion technology to deliver surprising power and explosive acceleration. With a 23 horsepower electric motor and a total weight of 145 pounds, the Zero X can keep pace with a conventional 250cc off-road motorcycle -- without the conventional problems of noise and pollution. Using the Zero X, riders can enjoy their surroundings without trashing them. This is made possible by using advanced electrical technology and by leaving a minimal physical footprint on the trail.

The Alt Car Expo will take place at The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, September 26-27. Guests in attendance will have an opportunity to demo the 08 Zero X first-hand and be the first to view the production model of the 09 Zero X.

Eligible for 10% Federal Tax Credit -

Zero Motorcycles Helps Deliver Tax Credits for Electric Motorcycles

-- Zero Motorcycles, the leading electric motorcycle manufacturer, today announced the company's upcoming line of street legal electric motorcycles will be eligible for the just passed 10% Federal tax credit for plug-in vehicles. This announcement comes just prior to Zero Motorcycles' official launch of its all-new Zero S Supermoto Street Bike.

Zero Motorcycles took the lead in working with Plug-In America and a coalition of other electric motorcycle companies to ensure the plug-in tax credit would be expanded to include all plug-in motorcycles. Standing together with companies coast to coast, the coalition rallied Congress to take action and expand green jobs in this exciting new industry. Zero customers and fans weighed in as well, sending thousands of letters to Congress in support of the expanded plug-in tax credits.

"Tax credits for electric motorcycles are not only an effective way to create jobs, but they are also an investment in green technology. We think that America can and should lead the world in green technology," said Neal Saiki, inventor and founder of Zero Motorcycles. "The fledgling electric motorcycle industry is rapidly responding to our country's need for affordable and environmentally responsible transportation. We're pretty excited to combine our passion for motorcycles with something that benefits everyone."

The stimulus legislation also provides for almost two billion dollars in advanced battery manufacturing funding. This will help revolutionize the American battery industry and assist Zero's efforts to build better and more powerful lithium-ion power packs.

Zero Motorcycles "Zero S" Electric Motorcycle Released

April 7, 2009 – Zero Motorcycles today revealed its new high performance electric street motorcycle, the Zero S.

This highly anticipated launch marks Zero Motorcycles’ official entry into the street legal category. The company’s new flagship motorcycle uses Zero’s proprietary "Z-Force" power pack and aircraft grade alloy frame to make the Zero S "the quickest production electric motorcycle in its class", according to the company.

Zero Motorcycles claims to have already booked substantial pre-orders for the Zero S without sharing details or images and now anticipates a soaring demand. The Zero S will begin shipping to customers in the next thirty days.

“Our goal from the beginning was to engineer a high performance electric urban street motorcycle that would change the face of the industry. The Zero S is a revolutionary motorcycle that is designed to tackle any city street, hill or obstacle,” said Neal Saiki, inventor and founder of Zero Motorcycles.

“The innovation behind the Zero S is what separates it from the competition. The Zero S is a high performance motorcycle that also happens to be fully electric and green. The fact that it’s electric means not having to get gas and reduced maintenance.”

Developed to aggressively take on urban environments and encourage the occasional detour, the Zero S integrates what the company calls a "revolutionary technology with innovative motorcycle design".

Instant acceleration and a lightweight design combine to form a power-to-weight ratio that is claimed to increase the motorcycle’s range and handling abilities.

At only 225 lbs, the company claims the Zero S has a range of up to 60 miles and a top speed of 60 MPH. With 31 peak horsepower and 62.5 ft/lbs of torque, the Zero S is "designed for optimal performance off the line, in sharp turns and while navigating obstacles", according to the company.

In addition to its performance and maneuverability, the Zero S uses a completely non-toxic lithium ion array and the majority of the motorcycle that the company says is fully recyclable.

The "landfill-approved" power pack is said to recharge in less than four hours while plugged into a standard 110V or 220V outlet. "Eco-friendly with zero emissions, the Zero S is also economy-friendly with an operating cost of less than one cent per mile or kilometer", according to Zero Motorcycles.

At $9,950, the Zero S is comparatively priced and also qualifies for the recently approved 10% Federal plug-in vehicle tax credit, a sales tax deduction, as well as other possible state-based incentives.

The company says that this may reduce the final cost of purchase by a minimum of approximately $1,000.00.

The Zero S was developed to comply with all street and highway motorcycle standards and apparently can be licensed for the road in most countries. It is available for purchase through the Zero Motorcycles website.

The company says "Zero Motorcycles is the next step in motorcycle evolution and represents the ultimate electric motorcycle technology. Unencumbered by conventional thinking about (how the company will) design, manufacture, and sell high performance electric motorcycles, they are on a mission to turn heads and revolutionize their industry by combining the best aspects of a traditional motorcycle with today’s most advanced technology. The result is an electric motorcycle line that’s insanely fast and environmentally friendly".

Zero Motorcycles first entered the motorcycle category with the launch of the 2008 Zero X electric dirt bike. The Zero X sold out in late 2008 and blazed the path for the long awaited launch of the Zero S Supermoto motorcycle.

Visit the Zero Motorcycles website for more information about the Zero S Supermoto motorcycle and general information the company.

Zero surprise with all-inclusive UK price for electric Supermoto
By Guy Procter - New bikes 22 May 2009 15:01
US electric bike manufacturer Zero says it’ll ship its Zero S supermoto to your door for £8,874. It certainly puts the four-wheeled equivalent – the similarly leading-edge but £65,000 Tesla roadster – in perspective.

The Zero S has a top speed of 60mph from its 62.5lb-ft / 31bhp motor, a commutable range of 60 miles and running costs of less than a penny a mile.

It only weighs 100kg and our first ride impressions suggested it’s good for supermoto-style jumps and fun to ride thanks to its always-available GSX-R750-rivalling torque.

The dirt-bike Zero X versions costs £6,492. More info at: http://www.zeromotorcycles.com

Zero Motorcycles
launches new MX model

Zero Motorcycles has just released another new electric bike for 2009, and this one's meant specifically for the track. While we found the standard-issue Zero X to be a solid performer in most situations, the demands of a motocross track are are bit too much for the stock X's front and rear suspenders. In light of this, Zero has equipped the new $8,250 Zero MX with a fresh set of 48 millimeter upside-down forks along with a beefier rear shock. Further, a new 19" front rim joins the 17" rear hoop in getting new and more aggressive knobby tires.
Says company founder and CTO Neal Saiki:

After engineering electric motorcycles for urban areas and off-road trails, we recognized the need to design a motorcycle with the motocross rider in mind.

Aggressive track riding requires a motorcycle with a high power-to-weight ratio and an advanced suspension system.

The Zero MX delivers both without the noise of a typical gas motorcycle. This makes riding possible in areas that are usually off-limits due to noise restrictions.

If even the standard MX model isn't enough, Zero also offers a few upgrades in the form of a 10-percent more powerful permanent magnet motor and an upgraded Marzocchi inverted fork. Hit the jump to see a short video of the new 2009 Zero MX in action along with the official press release.

PRESS RELEASE:

Zero MX Brings Revolutionary Electric Motorcycle Technology to the Track -

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., June 9 -- Zero Motorcycles today announced the latest addition to its electric motorcycle fleet, the Zero MX. The Zero MX is made specifically for track riding and motocross. The fork, shocks, wheels and tires are new for the MX. The Zero MX is high-performance, lightweight, low-maintenance and silent. It opens up local track riding possibilities by eliminating the loud noise associated with a traditional gas dirt bike. It is available for purchase beginning today.

"After engineering electric motorcycles for urban areas and off-road trails, we recognized the need to design a motorcycle with the motocross rider in mind," said Neal Saiki, founder and CTO of Zero Motorcycles. "Aggressive track riding requires a motorcycle with a high power-to-weight ratio and an advanced suspension system. The Zero MX delivers both without the noise of a typical gas motorcycle. This makes riding possible in areas that are usually off-limits due to noise restrictions."

Designed for bigger jumps on the track, the Zero MX uses a new high-performance motorcycle suspension system. It includes a beefier front-end and a newly developed custom rear shock that gives riders a fully adjustable spring preload and easily tuned damping. The Zero MX has also been fitted with an aggressive 19" front wheel and tire package that will accommodate any motocross tire.

The Zero MX is available for purchase through Zero Motorcycles' website and priced at $8,250. For more information on the Zero MX visit: http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/mx.

Zero Motorcycles is the next step in motorcycle evolution and represents the ultimate electric motorcycle technology. The result is an electric motorcycle line that's insanely fast and environmentally friendly.

Zero Motorcycles first entered the motorcycle category with the 2008 Zero X electric dirtbike. Exceeding all expectations, the Zero X sold out in late 2008 and blazed the path for the Zero S supermoto motorcycle.

Test Drive: Zero Motorcycles' Electric Zero S
The latest contender in the burgeoning zero-emissions all-electric motorcycle field is here--how does it stack up against the competition?

It’s shaping up to be the summer of the electric moto--in addition to Brammo’s Enertia, which we drove last month, Zero Motorcycles has just begun shipping their Zero S all-electric bike. How does the latest battery-powered ride compare? We took one for a spin to find out.

  • First Impressions
At first glance, both Brammo’s Enertia and Zero’s S cut a thinner, trimmer profile than your average internal combustion motorcycle. The Zero S is a bit thicker through the knees than the Enertia in order to accommodate its custom-built battery pack. And while this heft was designed with a “more is more” consumer mentality in mind, it doesn’t exactly contribute to a, “Boy, this sure is comfy” feeling on the bike.

The Enertia is considerably more refined in this department. Aesthetically, the fairings, framework and electrical layout all contribute to some very clean lines, where the Zero S has a raw and unfinished quality reminiscent of something out of Mad Max. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just depends on your personal style.

  • Power
Both posses Cheshire-grin-inducing pickup that only an experienced rider could differentiate. But there is a difference: Boasting 20 more pound-feet of torque than the Enertia, the S’s front end could easily come up on a rookie rider with a lead fist. The Enertia’s horsepower, while ample, is no threat to buck its jockey.

The Zero S also boasts a top speed of 70 mph vs. the Brammo’s 55 mph, making the S more highway-friendly. This can come in handy for avoiding those 4-wheeled monsters on the road who won’t necessarily hear you coming up behind them.
    Handling

Both bikes are extremely fun to throttle in a straight line. The Zero S’s power helps you pull away quicker from danger but the Enertia’s superior handling ability creates a more secure-feeling riding experience.
The Zero S weighs 225 lbs vs. the Enertia’s 280. However, the Enertia’s weight is so well distributed that it feels like a feathery 100 lbs. while in motion. The position and bulk of the S’s battery pack gives the overall sensation of added pounds making it less responsive during evasive maneuvers.

  • Cost
Both bikes are priced a bit higher than a traditional 600CC Japanese machine or a more petrol-friendly scooter. The Enertia, listed at $11,995, is $2,000 more than the $9,950 Zero S, but it does come with the support of Best Buy’s Geek Squad. Overall maintenance costs on the Enertia couldn’t be calculated at this time.

For 10% above the sticker price, the Zero S comes with a 2-year, no-fault warranty. This “anti-waste” warranty, in addition to covering the basic mechanical parts, also covers the batteries (which are not user-swappable). If your Zero S’s battery becomes obsolete within that 2-year span, you can buy the upgraded battery at 50% off. In addition, software upgrades on the S are currently free.

Both are eligible for a 10% federal tax credit as well as state and local benefits.

  • Green Factor
Both motorcycles are fully electric and produce only the indirect emissions via the electricity necessary to charge them. The Brammo Enertia uses a more “off-the-shelf” lithium iron-phosphate batteries, while the Zero S’s Lithium-manganese battery is custom-built and accounts for 50% of the machine’s overall price tag.

Brammo claims a life span of 75,000 miles, depending on usage, for each of their six power packs and in addition to being recyclable, Brammo believes that each unit could be utilized in another electrical power format afterwards.

Zero’s battery cell technology is encased almost entirely in copper, which disperses cell-damaging heat 5 times more effectively than most steel housing units. This pricey engineering decision leads to a longer cell life-span, Zero hopes. In addition, Zero is claiming 100% recyclability and landfill approval in the U.S., Canada and Europe.
    Final Decision

All told, there is something for everyone in each of these machines. Personal taste, rider experience and economics are all important factors when considering either.

As for me, this city-slick art director must side with his aesthetic sense and the Brammo Enertia. The Zero S’s is just a little too rough around the edges, corners and my posterior, but it’s a great lead into what is quickly becoming a nicely fleshed out category of bikes.
