Scoot Over: Next Up, A Hybrid Vespa
wallstreetjournal.blog

Because slaloming through traffic on a tiny Vespa just isn’t eco-friendly enough, Italy’s Piaggio today announced its newest creation: A hybrid gas-electric scooter.

At first blush, the move seems more like green piety than anything else. Traditional gasoline-powered scooters, like the iconic Vespa, already get great mileage. Adding a hybrid engine does boost fuel economy—Piaggo talks of 140 miles a gallon–but also ratchets up the price.

Piaggio’s hybrid three-wheel scooter will retail for about $12,500, the WSJ reports. That compares with just over $7,000 for the cheaper three-wheel models sold in the U.S. The hybrid version could hit the U.S. next year.

Though Piaggio aims to boost the profile of the lowly scooter in the U.S., they remain a lot more popular in Europe, where permanently high gas prices and a penchant for death-defying stunts make them the go-to choice for urban commutes.

So what’s the point? It seems to be more about giving hybrid engine technology a test run than saving the planet one scooter at a time.

Piaggio says the hybrid scooter includes a couple of firsts. It’s powered by a lithium battery, unlike the first-generation of hybrid cars, and the gas and electric engines operate simultaneously. That combines the sharp acceleration of an electric motor with the range of a gas-powered engine. That technology could later be applied to some of Piaggio’s other vehicles, which include light trucks.

And Piaggio has also come up with a novel—and perfectly Italian—way to solve the problem of silent engines bearing down on unwary pedestrians.

The hybrid scooter will include a horn.

MILAN -- Europe's largest scooter maker by sales, Piaggio SpA, will launch the first-ever hybrid electric-and-petrol scooter on Tuesday, joining the race to manufacture fuel-saving vehicles of all kinds.

The Italian-based company, which controls 25% of the European scooter market, launches the three-wheeler in Rome Tuesday, to be rolled out across Europe by August. The company plans to sell the vehicle in the U.S. by 2010, taking advantage of 10% tax credit for plug-in motorcycles, beginning in January 2010.

The move makes Piaggio the first company to sell a hybrid scooter, ...
