DIY Solar Flyer motorcycle tearing around:
Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix area resident and motorcycle enthusiast Richard Gryzch got tired of gassing up his bike all the time, and he decided to do something about it.

Rather than getting a fancy electric motorcycle, he modded one for himself -- making an electric bike that is seemingly covered in solar panels. The motorcycle uses no gas, goes up to about 90 miles per hour and has a range of around 50 miles.

There are very few details about the inner workings of the bike, so we're loathe to say it's 100 percent solar, but Richard does plan on extending his bike's range of 300 miles. Hit the read link to watch an extremely tiny video of Richard and his bike.

Richard Gryzch has never filled the gas tank of his motorcycle.

That's surprising considering he rides it everyday.

"People look at me at the stop light and just say, 'What is that?" Gryzch said. "I just shrug my shoulders and tell them, 'it's solar powered."'

That's right. His bike runs entirely off the sun and it's a project the Apache Junction man has been working on for more than two years.

"No gas, just hit the throttle and go," he said. "It's always been a dream of mine to build this bike."

Gryzch believes it's the first solar charged electric motorcycle in the world.

He's even given it a special name: The Solar Flyer.

Gryzch said he named it after the Radio Flyer, the popular red wagon from his childhood.

But his bike is far more sophisticated.

It tops 90 mph and can travel up to 50 miles at a time.

Not too bad, Gryzch said, but still admitting that he thinks he can do better.

"I've got a 300 mile plan," he said. "I'm not quite there."

Gryzch has given up a lot to build the bike, including selling a home and other motorcycles to finance the project.

"Everyone told me I was crazy for doing it," he said. "But I'm riding it and it works. And it could change everything."
