A scooter commuter By LUKE APPLEBY - The Wellingtonian Last updated 05:00 14/05/2009 SNUBBED: David Edmonds feels he is on to a winner with his electric scooters but Meridan Energy remains unmoved. Alternative energy champion Meridian Energy isn't interested in the electric scooters that David Edmonds has been importing from China. Edmonds, a moped enthusiast, has been impressed with the reliability and cost-effectiveness of the 48-volt electric scooter that he imported last year, but hasn't been able to rouse Meridian's interest. In reply to an email sent by Edmonds to promote the scooters, Meridian Energy electric vehicle programme leader K-J Dillon said the company was focusing on four-wheeled vehicles, not two-wheeled, because more New Zealanders were likely to use them. "Meridian has in the past evaluated a very small number of electric scooters, but isn't actively pursuing this research area at present," said Dillon. "From a marketing and promotional perspective, our focus is very much on educating consumers about the possibilities of safe four-wheel passenger electric cars." Meridian Energy spokesman Alan Seay confirmed that the company did not consider the scooters to be a viable way of reducing New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions. "One of our objectives at the moment is to look at the bigger picture," said Seay. Although the electric mopeds would be interesting to some people, most New Zealanders needed a reliable large car and not a scooter to commute or to do the shopping with. Edmonds remains optimistic, however. He said he was impressed by the number of electric scooters in China and thought to himself: "Fantastic! I'll have one of those." Now he is trying to sell them in New Zealand with limited success under the brand name Silent Scooters and through the internet trading site Trade Me at a price of about $2400. He said the advantages of an electric vehicle were numerous, one of the biggest being the sealed lead-acid battery that did not emit greenhouse gases. The scooters were also comparably cheaper to run about one cent per kilometre, compared to four cents per kilometre for scooters using petrol. However, the scooters have limitations. They require a covered area in which to charge the battery, which takes about eight hours, and have a range of up to only 60km on a full charge. "I also suspect the ongoing maintenance will be much less because there are fewer moving parts," he said. Electric scooters are classified in the same way as petrol scooters in New Zealand, with both requiring a minimum of a learner's car licence to drive. While they won't win any drag races, the scooters are capable of handling Wellington's hills at 50kmh.
