Why not GAMEVICE? Do-it-yourself mobile gaming console

I've been thinking that mobile gaming is better today than it was years ago, and yet there are still competing mobile consoles like Nintendo Switch or Vita or 3DS. But Nintendo is as old-hat as the major game consoles, having a very insular and limited games list. And while they have the portability going for them, there is the "Nintendo tax" on games, and an infuriating lack of business interest in porting to mobile phones and mobile devices that everyone already has. You don't get all that you want and purchases aren't transferrable. Heck, you can't even get a Switch right now. The supply chain is even worse than when the Wii was hot.
Can I do better than Switch? Well, I would need something like GAMEVICE to add the dual sticks and controller buttons to the phone or tablet. OK, that's an expense but it could work. The other thing was, are game developers on board with controller. And it seems like, yeah, there is nearly a thousand credible games in their compatibility page.
Personally, I'm considering the iPad mini 4 with 128 GB storage device as a kind of dedicated gaming pad. I have ruled out using the controller on my mobile phone because it is incompatible with mobile phone cases. And besides, could use a bigger screen for games.
Has anyone else explored this idea? I know there are criticisms of the fit and finish and button actuation being poorer than expected. On the other hand, the controller collapses and stores easily. And while this can be an expensive purchase, you know that the games are less expensive on mobile, which for gamers could really lower your total cost of ownership.
