Self defence

I'm not sure this would be the best place to put it, but I figured I had to put this somewhere.

Self defense.

What methods of self defense do you have in case of a emergency? What do you plan on buying/learning, and why?

I'm asking this because it just might make you realize how vulnerable you might be in situation where you would need to defend yourself, say a mugging or a complete and total meltdown of society where the law of the jungle is the only law left.

I personally don't really have anything except a few good knifes (which I keep at home) and a yellow belt in karate. I always carry one of those cheap little Swiss army knife rip-offs (a knife, a nail thing, and a tiny pair of scissors) but I know it won't serve me any good in a mugging situation.

I was planning on getting a Tazer or some pepper-spray latter on (when I'd have the cash to spare) but after talking with a friendly police officer, he told me that in Ontario, a citizen cannot have a Tazer or pepper-spray. I have yet to confirm this information by searching other sources, but since it came from a cop, there must be some truth to it, maybe.

I'm also planning on having a firearm at some point (legally of course) but since I'm in Canada and all, the steps to get one are longer than in the states (or so I hear)

Right up my alley.

As you said, Canada is unfortunately pretty draconian and anti-self defense. Aside from fist fighting, you cannot do much to stop an attacker who has decided to make you a victim. Weapons of any sort will really hurt your chances of winning the inevitable court case if you survive the encounter. I really feel bad for the Canadian citizen who realizes the need for self defense, yet cannot act upon it.

Yes, tazers and pepper spray are illegal in Canada, as are knives in a self defense scenario. Tazers are also illegal in many of the United States as well.

Thusly, you are limited to your mind and your fists. By all means, further that yellow belt if you have the ability to. However, know that your mind is and always will be your greatest defense, no matter where you live.

The key to self defense is developing a street sense; knowing where you should and shouldn't be, and when you can and cannot be at these places. If you can avoid a fight, that is the best defense you can partake.

Unfortunately, there may be a time when the best laid plans fail, and you will have to fall back on your fists. That's why I strongly recommend furthering your martial arts studies. That also comes with the benefit of better health habits, so there's really no bad part in learning such a skill.

And for anyone in America or one of the few remaining gun-friendly nations, I STILL recommend some form of martial art. Not only will it help you get and stay in shape, but martial arts will always be there for you, even if your weapons aren't. Also, guns and knives are not magical devices that ward off evil automatically. Like any tool, they have practical applications that require real knowledge and responsibility in order to be used properly.

Sadly, Flare, I cannot recommend you use a pistol or any other gun for anything but sport shooting in Canada. The legal implications are just far too great, even if the attack takes place in your own home. You just won't be able to win the court case and you'll end up doing time. It really sucks, for sure.

Ya, I figured as much. For the yellow belt, well, that was a few years ago, I quick karate a while back when the instructor started to be a real ass to everyone and they weren't teaching us anything anymore, just doing push-ups and sit-ups the whole period. As for the gun, that's more for my possible job later on, and the fact that I have a fascination with guns as tools and designs.
