LOCATION: 50 miles from the coast of the state of Louisiana, USA (also affecting the shorelines of other Gulf states, and may affect the Atlantic coastline and Africa's western shoreline) TYPE OF EVENT: Ecological Disaster with Severe Economic Effects DURATION: April 20th, 2010- Ongoing If ever there was a subject that perfectly suited the OHM mentality, its the ongoing saga of the BP oil spill, though the aftermath of 2005's Hurricane Katrina may tie it. Basically, an explosion on the deep shore oil rig, Deepwater Horizon, killed 11 people, injured many more, and more importantly, partially destroyed a semi-complete pipeline into an estimated 50 million barrel oil resevoir in the Gulf Coast. As a result, the oil has been spewing out of the Earth ever since, at an estimated rate of 12,000- 100,000 barrels a day. It has been estimated that a total of 18-40 million barrels have saturated the Gulf by now, and with no real solution in sight, all that is certain is that this is a disaster of the highest magnitude. The oil has already severely damaged the local environment, and its long term effects are certain to be extremely devastating for years to come. Along with this devastation comes the economic fallout- entire industries wiped out in a matter of weeks. The Gulf fishing industry is effectively non-existant, and won't recover for a very long time (we're talking years here). Along with the fishing industry, the Gulf states' tourism industry has also ground to a complete halt, probably because people aren't keen on spending a lot of money to visit a beach that may be saturated in oil. Combine this with a very fragile national economy, and we're talkin' an economic perfect storm, with thousands of people who were just barely getting by to begin with now completely without hope or options. And unfortunately, the majority of these people probably don't have a secondary skill to their repitoire, let alone a plan in case of such a scenario. This effectively means that they'll have to start completely over, and will very likely need assistance from the government in the form of cash. This is another huge strain placed on the unemployment program. The OHM Way: What if the OHM ideal were more present in this world when this happened? As learning secondary and more skills is a key to the OHM way of thinking, treating skill sets like Pokemon (gotta learn 'em all), followers of OHM would already be in a better position. Secondly, mobility is another key, meaning when you need to, you can take your skills with you onto greener pastures. It'll be a VERY long time before the fishing industry recovers, along with the tourism industry, which means that these people will now saturate the unskilled workforce until they can either return to their industry or learn a new skill (or remain an unskilled laborer from here on out, which is actually the most likely). They will also be more likely to move inland and perhaps West, into Texas. The OHM follower would need to be able to anticipate these trends, and go to where their skills are in demand. More than likely, this means moving out further than the rest. But in order to survive, and live comfortably by your own rules, it HAS to be this way. You HAVE to be willing to travel with your skills when the situation demands it. Waiting it out is not an option here, unless you want to work for BP or the feds in the clean up effort. Chances are, you wouldn't. That is, unless you are truely valiant and have some skills that will help in the clean up effort. Not all of the intelligent people in Louisiana and the other Gulf states should necessarily flee, but a good share of them will be far better served elsewhere. The main key here would be the ability to analyize the situation and follow your instinct. Unfortunately, many people these days have a severely diluted instinct, and are extremely reliant on what other people explicitly tell them to do instead of thinking for themselves. Rediscovering your instincts is a definate bullet point. Going through life on auto-pilot makes you a slave to circumstance. Master the situation, and you master your life, and come closer to becoming a complete human being who knows the meaning of life. That is our point. |
