One of the major parts of the Outer Heaven philosophy deals with survivalism, but we have to discuss what exactly is meant by "survivalism" here. In modern times, the term survivalism is mostly associately with people who believe the world as we know it is on an unchangable course towards collapse, and that eventually people will be forced to concentrate on surviving the harshest conditions imaginable. That isn't necessarily what our aim is here. While it is extremely preferable to be prepared for even worst case scenarios (hence the practice of keeping a Bug Out Bag at the ready, and honing skills that don't serve much of a purpose outside of tradtional survivalist scenarios), what is meant by "survivalism" here is a bit more grounded and accepting that the world may not fall apart at the seams in our lifetime. There are shades of gray; different levels of degredation that we may have to endure. Hence, the OHM concept of survivalism also deals with surviving in the modern, civilized world as it stands and evolves, while at the same time accepting the possibility that things may go south in a hurry. What this really means is adopting more street sense than most people possess, and expanding your skill set to be best prepared for unexpected economic twists and turns. In other words, realizing that the world we live in is not, and never will be, perfect, so our idea of heaven will always be outside of the norm. When it comes to modern, city-based survivalism, what you need to realize is that even the best laid plans don't always go the way you want or need them to, and bitching about it won't do much to help you. Instead, it is important to adopt a mentality that allows flexible, quick thinking that borders on the overly cautious, perhaps paranoid level. It is essential to learn patience in this fast food, ADD-adled world. All of that is becoming a lost art, leaving many people completely unprepared for all manners of disasters. Make back up plans for your back up plans, and back up plans for those as well. Our nature is defensive, rather than offensive. However, we're proactive instead of passive, taking charge of our own lives and refusing to leave it in others' hands. |
