While there will never be an official rule book for the OHM, the movement is founded on some very basic principals which all followers should try to adhere to as best as they can.

1) No reckless drinking, no tobacco, and no drugs.

These were the original principals behind the Straight Edge Movement of the 1980s. It should be noted that the founder of the SXE movement, Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat, didn't mean that you couldn't have a beer or two on occassion. The idea was to stay as poison free as possible, with the worst poisons being tobacco, street drugs, and excessive drinking.

Eventually, people started to add in their own stipulations. In addition to absolutely no alcohol ever, many people have extended the SXE mentality into their food, becoming vegetarian or vegan in the process.

The Outer Heaven Movement goes back to the original idea behind Straight Edge, which is to keep a clear mind and stay healthy. If you want to add a vegetarian diet to your idea of heaven, go right ahead, but that isn't part of the core OHM cornerstones.

Another reason why you should limit or do without these excesses is that they are a liability you don't need. In case of an emergency, nobody is going to want to put up with an addict of any kind, and the last thing you'd need is to be scrambling around for a pack of smokes or a fifth or Jack when you need your mind as clear as possible.

2) No promiscious sex.

This was another one of the founding principals of Straight Edge. The idea then was that STDs were a major concern, and sleeping around remains a great way to catch some godawful disease. Not only that, but it also stressed that people should respect one another, rather than objectifying each other like animals.

These are fantastic points when used with a survivalist mentality, as you won't be obsessed with having sex when you need your act together the most, and you'll be able to stay healthier if you avoid unnecessary risks.

3) Get off government aid.

If you collect Social Security, welfare, or disability payments, and you really don't need to, then stop it!

Being reliant on these things makes you weaker and vulnerable to government control and collapse. Some people have no choice because of dire circumstances, but the fact is that many people take this handout just because they can. Not only is this selfish behaviour harming everyone attached to the system, but you also become a real liability for them as well.

4) Become aware that people are out to get you.

Laugh now, but give it some thought and it doesn't seem all that crazy or paranoid. The fact is that no matter how much respect you have for your fellow man, they are under no obligation to return the favor. There are many predators out there, and because of that, there's a real need to learn how to protect yourself.

Stay within the law on this one. Countries all over have different laws on self defense, and its your job to know the law where you live and where you travel.

In the event of an emergency, man's most primal instinct, survival, kicks into overdrive, and if you have something they want because you prepared ahead of time and he didn't, it's all up to you to protect yourself.

Arm yourself with whatever means legally possible. For some people in the more draconian countries, that means knowledge and skills instead of tools.

5) Divorce yourself from the grid as much as you can.

The "grid" refers to the often federally or state maintained basic needs system most of us are utterly dependant on. Things like natural gas, electricity, water, sewers are all things that are subject to their control, and in most cases, their neglect.

If you have the means to get yourself off of any of these systems, go for it.

6) Be ready at a moment's notice.

Whether or not you believe some unnamed disaster of epic proportions is inevitably going to wipe out modern civilization will always be subject to personal analysis. However, there's never a good arguement against being prepared for even mundane emergencies.

The Outer Heaven Movement's idea of being prepared stresses mobility, meaning that you should be able to escape most any situation with little or no notice and still have AT LEAST the most basic of necessities with you.

This idea revolves around a staple of the Survivalist Movement- the Bug Out Bag.

One's Bug Out Bag should include basic provisions like drinkable water, food, a supply of vital medications you may need, a first aid kit, a means of self defense (if applicable), a multitool, maps, a small stash of cash, and other vital needs you'd be able to carry by yourself.

7) Family First.

Most of us here still live near our family, or have started one of their own. It should go without saying that you should make sure your family is as prepared as you are if possible. This includes making sure they have their own Bug Out Bags, are aare of critical escape routes and meeting places, and are capable of defending themselves when you're not on hand.

8) Stay Updated.

While you don't necessarily have to be politically active to be a part of the movement, you should stay up to date with current events as much as you can. Even events that are seemingly unrelated to you may end up having a profound effect on your life. That's why it is absolutely critical that you dedicate some time each day to take a look at what's going on in the world.
