Q: What is this "Outer Heaven Movement"? A: Basically, it's an attempt to get people to take on more self-responsibility and self-respect, rather than relying on a government or any other entity for all of their needs. Q: Okay, so why do I want to do that? Sounds like a lot of work. A: It can be a lot of work depending on who you are, but the reason you want to do this would be to ensure you're not caught totally offguard in case there's some sort of extenuating circumstance that shuts down the groups you'd normally be reliant on. Think of what went on in the days after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans of 2005. Our ideal goal would be to survive such situations without being caught completely by suprise. Also, it also has the benefit of being more socially responsible, as you'd be one less strain on the system that many people have no choice but to be completely reliant on. Q: Well, how do I become a member of this movement? A: You don't. There's really no official roster or list of people who are in. Either you want to be active or you don't. But to more aptly answer what you want to know, all you have to do is start weening yourself off of the systems you may or may not have been taking for granted. Q: This is starting to sound like some sort of survivalist militia. Is it? A: Again, there's no official roster, nor do we even need to meet face to face, so it isn't a militia, but it does take inspiration from both the Survivalist Movement and the Straight Edge Movement. Q: The what? A: The Survivalist Movement is a trend towards making sure one's self is absolutely prepared to survive some of the harshest conditions imaginable, usually under the pretense of a large scale emergency. This includes stockpiling provisions and useful goods, becoming more atune to the need for self-defense, and in many cases advocates getting off the "system". The Straight Edge Movement is a completely seperate scene born from the punk music scene of the early 1980s, which went against the typical excesses of rock n' roll (excessive drinking, drugs, and promiscious sex were the original corner stones). The intent was to keep a clear mind and a healthy body, which went against the music scene of the era. While these two movements seemingly have little in common, they share a common thread; one that places a high emphasis on personal responsibility. The Outer Heaven Movement merely combines the basic ideas of these two movements. You don't have to believe the government is going to completely collapse, nor do you have to listen to Minor Threat on a non-stop basis in order to follow the Outer Heaven Movement. Q: What is the Outer Heaven Movement's political stance? A: There is no official stance. You don't even have to be politically active in order to follow the movement. People from all walks of life should feel comfortable in the OHM, as our one uniting factor here is the desire to be as independant and self-reliant as we can realistically be. Different people will have different interpretations as to what this means, and that's okay. Q: What does "Outer Heaven" mean, anyways? A: Its shamelessly ripped off from the Metal Gear video game series. It was originally the stronghold for a loose cannon mercenary guild that threatened to take over the world with nuclear weapons, but the concept of Outer Heaven evolved as the series continued. The Outer Heaven Movement has little to do with the Outer Heaven featured in the video games. Its just a cool name. If you want to assign meaning to it, think of it as being outside of the typical heaven most people expect of the world. Our aim is to be outside of the mainstream system, and that's where our heaven lay. The skull and snake logo was also borrowed from a doodle by lead Metal Gear artist Yoji Shinkawa. Again, it was picked because I thought it looked sweet, rather than for any specific reason. Q: Are we supposed to hole up in some sort of Unibomber shack in the middle of nowhere waiting for the bomb to drop? A: You can if you want, if that's where your idea of heaven is. But most of us are just going to try and gradually ween ourselves off the system as we take on more self-responsibility. Again, everybody is going to have their own idea of what this means, so by all means, live in that shack if that's what you wanna do. |
