Jack was heading back home. He'd been shopping for his mother, and he found it odd to for once be able to buy whatever they wanted. The weight of the golden eggs in his purse made his hip sag a little, as he carried a bucket filled with food. He most likely looked a bit funny, but he never really noticed that kind of thing about himself. Hell, he didn't notice much of anything about himself. On his way, his head became enveloped in thought, peering up at the sky with wonderment. So much so, that he didn't notice that someone was walking in direct juxtaposition to him. Their shoulders banged together, causing Jack to lose his balance and stumble, the grip on the bucket releasing. The thing crashed to the ground, bread and apples and rolling about in dismemberment of careful arrangement. "Uuf." Said Jack, as he rubbed his shoulder. The person, whoever it was, seemed in a hurry, and hadn't even cursed Jack for bumping into him. Sighing, he shook his head about, trying to make sense of what just happened. When his head stopped shaking, he came to notice the vicinity: A dark alley. His mother had forbade him from going near these kinds of places. But he was a man now! He just killed a giant! A giant who was...Giant! Anyway, Jack bent knee to pick up his purchases. There was a bit of dirt on the bread, but no big deal. When everything was gathered up again, he cleared his throat and glanced down the alley, just in case. It was dark. That had been established. But what he really hadn't noticed before was how the darkness seemed to be moving. Were there people down there? A cat maybe? He stood before the black expanse, staring down it with apprehension... |

Little Red stood at the opposite end of the alley from Jack, unaware of his presence at all. Another pair had caught her eye and she had paused to watch their interactions, not paying attention to her surroundings. Ever since being eaten by that wolf, she had carried a knife with her everywhere, and this made her feel safer than ever before. After the engagement suddenly dispersed, Little Red looked around to survey where she was and how she would get home from here. Her eyes traveled down the alley, where she saw the shape of Jack standing opposite of her. From here, she couldn't be sure of who it was, but she did think they looked sort of familiar. So, feeling brave with her knife held tightly in her fist beneath her cloak, the girl made her way down the alley, heading straight towards Jack. Edited by Chimalmaht, Jun 14 2008, 11:08 PM.

The darkness unfurled, and revealed...Huh? What was she doing here? Before he met her in the woods, Jack had seen this girl now and again, but he'd never really known to call her anything but Little Red. Why did people call her that? He didn't seem to take note of her red attire or anything like that. Putting two and two together wasn't his forté. He stared at her. "...I wasn't expecting you there." Jack backed up slighly, looking down at Little Red with bemusement. For some reason he smoothed his hair a bit, and trailed a hand along his chest, making sure all of his buttons were buttoned. This 'man' business was odd. "Why were you in there?" |

A wave of relief washed over Little Red as the shadow proved to be Jack. Not that she would admit it, but she had been frightened of who she was approaching. She relaxed her guard and slipped the knife into a pocket within her cloak, hoping that Jack hadn't noticed her carrying it. He certainly hadn't reacted as if she was holding a knife. Little Red took in the fact that he was fixing himself up now, which made her feel a little fluttery. So, of course, she rolled her eyes at the boy. "I wasn't in there," she told him, making it sound like the most obvious thing. "I was standing at the other end, and I saw you down here, so I thought I should come say hi." It was basically a lie, but he didn't need to know that. She felt bad lying to him. But she couldn't tell him that she was afraid. "What are you doing just standing here?" He watched her put the knife away. He hadn't even realized she'd been holding it. He supposed it was because she always seemed to have it whenever they'd meet. That was also most likely why he didn't feel the need to scold her for being in there all alone. She could take care of herself...that much was certain. "...I was going home to Mother, but someone knocked into me, and my groceries fell. So I picked them up, though there's dirt on the bread...then I saw something in there. I thought it might be something bad. But it was just you." Jack felt his jaw relax, and he tried to smile a bit, but it was harder than he'd thought. He felt all edgy. But he wouldn't let it show, and so he inhaled deeply and continued to stand there looking at her. |

((I've been having trouble thinking of something to say. Buuut, I watched ItW today, and I think I gained back some inspiration. :] )) Little Red listened to his story, with one eyebrow raised slightly. She had to admit that it wasn't very interesting, but she let him finish. With anyone else, she probably would've interrupted with some sarcastic remark. As he finished, though, a slight smile played across her lips. "You were scared, weren't you?" A slight chuckle escaped from her throat at the thought, although it was mostly to keep up appearances rather than because she actually thought it was funny. "You were scared something was going to come out and hurt you." This statement sounded less amused than the previous one, and more curious. |

((Yaiii!!)) His jaw tightened, and he looked away from her, "You must always be careful around dark alleys. I was being cautious. It's my duty as a grown man to rid the world of evil. If there was something bad in there, like a dragon or a giant, I would be ready!" Jack straightened himself and puffed out his chest, folding his arms. This was how manly men stood. "You shouldn't be going about in places like that, little girl. There could be bad things in there. You might get yourself eaten up again. Or worse." |

Little Red scoffed at Jack's words as she looked him up and down. Somewhere deep down, she enjoyed the posture he was standing in, but she knew that any such feelings were ridiculous. "You think you would do better than me in such a battle?" she asked incredulously. "I don't see you with any sort of weapon." Here she paused, wondering briefly if he did have something concealed. Just because she flaunted her knife didn't mean that he would, but she hid this uncertainty. "I can take care of myself," Layla reminded Jack, almost defiantly. "And don't call me 'little girl' either." |

He sniffed. No, he didn't have his axe with him. So what? "I rely on my man instincts to save me." Jack replied, thinking that would suffice. He changed his pose. Standing like that was tiring, especially when you had to inhale so deeply to make yourself look bigger. So he relaxed, and swung his bag over his shoulder. It hit him with an audible thump. "Uuf." He said, again, though he tried to make this as subtle as possible. Which was difficult for him. "Well what else can I call you? It's not like anyone calls you anything." Though, he could have just asked her himself. But he decided not to mention that. "Little Red Riding Hood, that's all they say of you. That's a silly name. Because you don't even have a red hood anymore. I've never even seen you with it on. At least, not in person. I mean, I've seen you with it, but I've never talked to you whilst you were wearing it." He rambled a bit, trying to make sense of what was so clear in his head. Jack remembered quite well all the times he had seen her about with it. Skipping along, sometimes with a basket for her granny. He'd never talked to her then, though at times he would pass her on his way to market. Down the lane, she'd be kicking up dust with her jaunty steps, while he trudged along, eyeing her interestedly, at times with Milky-White in toe. |

Little Red shook her head, listening to Jack as he continued to talk about her hood. It really wasn't that interesting, was it? Finally she decided that he needed to stop talking. "My name's Layla," she interrupted his rant. Hopefully that would help his current predicament. "And Little Wolf Skin Riding Hood would just be a ridiculous name," she pointed out about her new cloak. "I like Little Red better, even if I did give my cloak to the baker." She put a slightly snooty tone in her voice, to remind the boy that she had done such a selfless act. Maybe it would impress him. |

He didn't object to being interrupted. "Layla." He tried it out on his own tongue, looking her in the eyes, to see if they matched it. "That's a nice name." They did. Jack didn't want to laugh, but he couldn't help it. Imagine calling someone such a long name! Truthfully, not a lot of people heard him laugh. He smiled plenty, that was plain. But laughing out loud, with an audible sound, was rare for him. The reasoning was as yet unclear. He did it now, however, as he stepped a bit closer to squint at the dead wolf's head hanging there. It didn't make him laugh again, but he smiled a little. "Yes, you did. Then my cow ate it." Jack returned, recognizing that tone. He wouldn't let her one up him, even if it was hard to do so. |

Layla couldn't help but to smile slightly as Jack looked into her eyes. However, she was quick to catch herself, and averted her eyes until she regained some composure. When she focused back in, the boy was laughing, though, and she felt as if perhaps she had missed something he had said. Her face was blank, so that if he had something, he would think she didn't think he was very funny. At the same time, though, she couldn't help but think that he had a nice laugh, and she wondered why she hadn't ever realized before. All of this "puberty" stuff was annoying to her, and she didn't know what to think. "I know your cow ate it," she reminded him, folding her arms across her chest and pushing her creeping thoughts about him aside. "I was hoping I would get it back one day." She made sure to sound disappointed. "I did really love that cloak, you know." |

Jack stopped smiling, and instead gave her a look mixed with sympathy and confusion, "Well you're cloak helped the butcher and his wife have a baby, however that worked... It also helped Milky-White give me milk again. I know how that works." He paused thoughtfully, thinking of how nice it was not to pull so hard on his poor cow. He--she was milking like a fountain these days. This made his odd look go away, to be replaced with one of vapid contentment. When he was done thinking about milk, he looked back over at Layla. "Layla...Layla were you going somewhere?" Jack couldn't remember if she'd said that already. She probably had, in which case he might just feel a bit silly. A feeling he did not often get, though his overall demeanor often conjured it towards others. |

Layla had to admit that she was pretty confused about the process of the cow being able to eat her cloak, but she supposed it was nice. "Yes, I suppose that is a good thing," she answered vaguely, sort of lost in the wanderings of her mind. It was true she missed her cloak, but it seemed like the baker and his wife would miss not having a baby more. Still, though.... She was brought back to her current surroundings by Jack's voice saying her name. "Was I going anywhere?" she repeated, as if the answer should be obvious, although her next words were less rude and she smiled slightly. "Well, I was, yes. Just heading back home from grandmothers. However...I don't really want to go home." |

That butcher was a nice fellow, if a bit...hmm, jumpy. He reminded Jack a bit of a little grasshopper. Well, not as little as an actual grasshopper, then the butcher would be a faerie butcher. Still, littler than he, Jack. Said Jack stepped back a bit, tightening his grip on the sack over his shoulder. "Why not?" He asked, after looking at her a bit, trying to answer his question himself. But he couldn't really figure it out. "I was going home too." Though that much was obvious, and again, he thought he might have said that already. The sack was getting a bit heavy, as was the coin purse at his waist. He thought briefly about putting both of them down, but then the bread would get mushed, and someone might steal his purse! |
