The Verse is rich in slang and the chinese language. And well it's fun to use those in RP'ing, thus a very nice list of Chinese and English Slang! So don't be ornery and read the gorram list :D.


Chinese Slang in the Firefly verse.

Below is a list of Chinese slang, this isn’t a full list of every word/phrase used out there in the series/other media of Firefly, but should be sufficient to use in Roleplaying.

English Slang:

Advocate: A lawyer
Atmo: shortened form of atmosphere
Backbirth: One born on a primitive or outer planet; implies naivety or stupidity.
Bang-up: Great 'It was a bang-up job"
The Black: Slang for outer space.
Blackout: A shutdown of all ship power to avoid detection. Example: “Go to Blackout!”
Browncoats: A nickname for the rebels who fought against the Alliance in the Unification War, in reference to their brown duster jackets.
Bughouse: Mental hospital
Bushwhack: Ambush. Example: “We were bushwhacked!”
Cod: A form of the male genitalia.
(The) Core/Core planets: The central, Alliance-governed planets of the star system in which the series takes place.
Cortex: An interplanetary information network roughly analogous to the modern-day Internet.
Doxy: Female lover or mistress, a prostitute
Drops: Illegal addictive drugs
Feds, Federals: Members of the Alliance, its military, law enforcement, or functionaries.
Footpad: Pickpocket thief in a town
Genseed: A type of genetically engineered crop seed issued to those sent to settle terraformed planets and moons
The Goods: Loot
Gorram: variation of god-damn
Hornswoggle: To trick someone.
Hump: substitute for the term "screw/fuck"; as in, "we're totally humped."
Oh-two: Oxygen
On the dodge: Wanted by the police
On the drift: Floating in space without fuel, unable to travel
Ornery: Stubborn, not passive
Pipeline: A communications channel
Preacher: Any individual who is religious.
Pretties: Fancy things
Purple-bellies: A nickname for Alliance soldiers, in reference to their purple body armor.
Reader: Short for mind reader
Reavers: Modern pirates. Men gone mad on the edges of space, flying dangerous ships and preying on other space vessels. Basically, if they board you or you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, they will kill you, rape you, and eat your flesh. And sometimes, if you're lucky, they'll do it in that order.
Run afoul: To get into trouble
Rutting: A mild emphatic expletive, a less offensive synonym for "fucking", as the word 'rut' is a verb meaning 'to have animalistic sex'.
Scratch: Valuables or treasures
Second Story Job: Breaking and entering robbery.
Shindig: a party, usually with dancing
Shiny: An adjective roughly corresponding to modern-day "cool," "neat" or "sweet."
Skyplex: Orbital city or space station
Sly: An adjective meaning "homosexual," rather than the modern word, "gay." ("Heart of Gold")
Tetchy: Sensitive or complaining
Tonic: Amateur or illegal alcoholic drink
Triplex: A slang term for a planet side shopping and entertainment megaplex
U-Day: A shortened version of Unification Day.
Verse: A shortened form of the word "universe".
Wave: A form of two-way instant audio-video communication, similar in prevalence of usage to modern e-mail or phone calls.
Went South: The plan fell apart when troubles appeared. Example: “Things went south when the Reavers showed up.”
