Welcome!

Welcome to Out In The Black, an RPG set in the Firefly verse. This is a totally original RPG, thus no canon characters or canon ships.

It's not mandatory to have seen the show or the movie, as everything you need to know is located on board! If you have any questions feel free to leave a message in the cbox or pm a staff member!

Ships and Space Habitats

  • Firefly class – A medium range cargo ship, Firefly class ships have been modified by Captains and engineers to suit a variety of purposes. Firefly class ships have a flexible design specification, and can run at speeds up to 30 times faster than the speed of sound when high enough above a planet’s surface- around 62 miles above sea level. The Firefly class ship's gravity comes from a rotating ring just aft of the ship's midsection. It produces a gravity field using a physics principal that also acts as a momentum dampener to allow passengers more freedom of movement during all phases of flight.

  • Dragon class – A larger class of ship than the Firefly class boats, the Dragon class was originally designed to be a commercial vessel. They serve well as colonial ships, and like the Firefly class, the Dragon class ship's gravity comes from a rotating ring just aft of the ship's midsection. It produces a gravity field using a physics principal that also acts as a momentum dampener to allow passengers more freedom of movement during all phases of flight. Being bulkier than the Firefly, it is slower than the Firefly the closer to surface level it gets.

  • Space stations (Skyplex) – Both privately owned and owned by the Alliance, space stations are huge ships, housing the owner’s closest allies, or the Alliance’s current troops in the area. Rather than being mobile space stations orbit around planets, but often contain smaller shuttles and allow docking for a number of smaller ships, depending on the size of the station. Consisting of multiple decks, they are able to partially power themselves by way of solar energy.

Ships/stations aren't limited to these classes mentioned above at all. And as we go more classes will be added!

Onboard life support systems - humans inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Without a life support system, they wouldn't be able to travel between planets; the air would quickly become stale and chances are anyone on board would freeze to death before they suffocated. To allow for interplanetary travel, ships [or boats] are fitted with life support systems, consisting of fans which circulate air around the vehicle, and tanks of algae, hidden from view, which keep the air fresh via photosynthesis.

Faster Than Light (FTL) Travel - Not possible in this universe.

Surface travel
Most commonly, people on the surfaces of planets walk. Some might ride horses, and on some of the outerlying planets some may even carts still, reminiscent of the Old Wild West. An enterprising smuggler may have a mule (similar to a quad bike) or a skiff (like a flying car with no wheels and no roof), and both Firefly and Dragon class boats have shuttles that can cope with surface runs and short range interplanetary travel. Certain planets outside the core have rail networks, but as with much of the Alliance it is the core planets that receive the best transport links.

Weapons
Shotguns, pistols, crossbows... Weapons in the 'verse are no different to what would be available today, although some might seem a little anachronistic. 'Cultural' weapons such as katanas and shuriken etc have had no showing in the canon-'verse, but hatchets, knifes and anything with a sharp edge can be considered a weapon in the hands of, say, a Reaver.

The better weapons are generally held by Alliance forces, although the Reavers have some pretty nasty tricks up their sleeves too.

These are two links with weapon info and the sort of weapons you can find in the verse:

Technology

Technology in the 'verse is more advanced the closer you get to the core, but there are several items that seem to permeate throughout the system thanks to interplanetary trading.

  • General Technology
  • The Cortex - A general information system, the Cortex appears to be a system-wide version of the internet. It can be accessed via touch screen technology, which can take the standard form, or be as flexible as a piece of paper.
  • Ident Card - An identification card apparently digitally encoded with a person's personal information. These cards can be scanned (using the correct device), allowing the viewer access to all of said information. Having an Ident card might be a sign of... more legitimate citizenship, and it can be considered most folk on the border/rim don't have Ident Cards.
  • Atmo'lyser - An atmosphere analyser. In it's simplest form, it will detect atmosphere composition and breathability. More complex versions also detect toxins, pollutants and other nasties in the air, although this can take up to fifteen minutes if a reliable check is required.
  • Holography - Recording and projecting images in three dimensions.
  • Holo-recorders - Extremely expensive kit. A holo-recorder can store up to five hours of high quality audio-visual data, and can stream live via the Cortex too. It was a holo-recording that revealed the truth about Miranda to the System.
  • Paper Screens - A paper thin computer moniter, CPU, and touch screen all worked into one sheet of paper. This sort of miniature computer is seen throughout the 'verse. And thus apprently not very expensive. image of paper screens
  • Solar Sheeting - An inexpensive way of collecting power from the sun. And would also provide hot water (as water is used to absorb the waste heat). A sunny day would give you approximately 30kW of electricity from solar absorbtion alone. In contrast, the average home only requires approximately 10kW.
  • Terraforming - Terraforming is the process of transforming a planet's surface and atmosphere to Earth-like standards, so that human and Earth animal and plant life can live on it. Once planets are thus changed, colonists are placed on them with minimal resources and expected to develop on their own. Thus, the closer to the center of the Alliance one goes, the older the planets and higher the level of technology, and, as one might expect, the further out towards the rim you get, the younger and less developed they are.

The technology of terraforming worlds is clearly not perfect, resulting in a spectrum of colonial worlds ranging from plague-infested rat holes to clearly privileged worlds with all the latest advantages of technology.

    Space/Ship Related

  • Grav Dampener - Given the name, it's likely that what this device actually does is reduce the effect of natural gravity and inertia on the ship and its crew, so to be accurate, the ship could still turn, but doing so would probably kill or damage everyone and everything on board. Could also be possibly used in certain terraforming projects.
  • Land Lock - A system that disables a targeted ship's engines and keeps it docked or on the ground.

    Medical Related

  • Dermal mender - A piece of medical equipment used to mend injuries such as cut off ears.
  • Med Bay - Most ships meant to transport humans for any length of time have at least one Med Bay. Although they might be primitive or rudimentary, most any stocked Med Bay will have one or more exam tables, surgery supplies, a supply of basic pain-killers and sterilization kits, and some form of electronic imaging systems (which might range on the low-end from simple EKG-like displays and a small surgical camera all the way to Core-World-level technology like an Imaging Suite).
  • Imaging Suite - An entire room, found in Core hospitals (and large ships?), which scans bodies and displays the data with Holography. One component is the Three D Neuro Imager.
  • Three D Neuro Imager - Scans a body's nervous system. Probably a typical component of an Imaging Suite. Such technology is probably not commonplace outside of advanced Core hospitals.
