Dodge glowered into her own drink as the smaller woman cursed her luck. Seemed to be that the both of them had pissed in karma's crunchies at one point or another, and now they were both getting the shaft. On the other hand, she was glad that she wasn't alone in this mess - a merc stuck in this nowhere town was about as useful as a grounded pilot, and maybe they'd be able to work something out.
Her grump session was broken as the smaller woman took an especially large gulp of the whiskey. Dodge grinned, watching to see if the other woman would actually break out coughing or not. She didn't, and Dodge's estimation of her went up a little. She was tough stuff to have kept it down like that - Ol'Hall whiskey was damned strong.
"Hell. I'll drink to that." Dodge said as the woman swore she'd leave planet on the next ship out. "May whatever god of luck we dun pissed off forgive us, and may the next ship that comes this way take pity on fools and liars." That last phrase was a bit of a change on the usual expression "may the gods take pity on fools and liars", but it seemed appropriate for this toast. She raised her glass in a salute and then took a swig, feeling it burn all the way down to the pit of her stomach.
"So," she said, setting the glass back down and rubbing at her temples. "you managed to find any work in the meantime? I just been haulin' boxes and working fields, mostly." She looked distinctly sour as she said so, and scowled. "Ain't no gorram farm hand... But it's about the only work that's out here worth havin' that don't involve paintin' yerself up for the doxy house."

Chen repeated the toast softly and took another large gulp of her drink, this time grimacing a little at the taste. What she wouldn't give for a real whiskey...Turning her attention back to the other woman, a sarcastic smile crossed Chen's face. Her? Work? not for these farmhands. They were just a bunch of scared children who needed to be taught how the verse really worked.
"I got a few jobs of keepin' the drunk locals from doin' any damage to private property," Chen said with a shrug. "Not much, but it does keep me fed, and I don't like goin' hungry. Ain't had to since I was a kid and I ain't plannin' on doin' so again anytime soon."
Doxy house wouldn't take her anyway. Chen wasn't exactly the type that most menfolk were keen on gettin' into their bed. 'Specially not with that huge tattoo on her arm. While some whores did have tattoos, theirs were more of the pretty ones that folks liked to look at. Apparantly a Chinese dragon wasn't as pleasin' to the eyes as a gorram butterfly or some other little prissy critter. Not only that, the moment one of these menfolk got their eyes on the business end of Matilda, they were more likely to be runnin' for the hills than runnin' for her bed. That rifle was big and damn did she do good work.
A sort of sarcastic smile crossed Chen's lips once more as she chuckled to herself. "Though I do think I scared off more work than found it once the folk here gotta good long look at Matilda."

I tend to keep things clean, but if you want this to be messy, that's up to you.
