One week. One lousy, gorram week.

That's how long it'd been since Captain Walsh had given Nell the boot and left her stranded here on this gorram dustball. There wasn't a proper port anywhere on the planet, just a scattering of new settlements that were struggling to survive in the poorly terraformed landscape. How in the hell was she going to get off planet?

She'd been asking around, and from the sound of it, this "prosperous" little town didn't get ships through very often - they were self-sufficient, more or less, but they sure as hell didn't have a lot of spare cargo lying around that'd make it worthwhile for ships to pay a call. Sure enough, she'd missed the last ship that had been on planet by just a handfull of days - Solace, she thought it'd been called.

Hell, she could sure use some solace right now... She'd spent the day out in the hot sun, tilling a field for one of the local farmers. Sure, she'd managed to earn a few platinum for her efforts, but mucking around in the heat and the dust did nothing but remind Nell how far she was from the black... And it could be months before the next ship came through.

She could use a drink. She could use several drinks.

She cleaned up best as she could in the barn, and then slouched her way over to Destiny's End, scowling at the sign as she passed it. Destiny's End, huh? No gorram way this was gonna be where Nell Dodson wound up, no sir... Not if she had her way about it. She'd find a way off-planet. Eventually.

Grumpily, she made her way to the bar and planted herself in one of the seats. "Whiskey... If you got any. Otherwise, gimme whatever whatever you got that don't taste like it came from the netherends of a horse."

Cheng-Wang Lin grabbed her mug and leaned back in her seat, feet propped up on the table. As she enjoyed her drink--which had a very nice kick to it, really, for something made on such a backwards planet--she observed the other clients of the tavern. There were the typical farmers and farm hands, and...hello.

Sitting up and taking her feet off of the table, Chen watched the woman who had entered the tavern and walked to the bar. Shaved head, tall, and well-muscled. Obviously a spacer. And that tattoo on her scalp was quite interesting. The young mercenary arched a delicate eyebrow curiously as she continued to observe the woman.

"Interesting," Chen muttered to herself as she finished her drink. "Very interesting."

What was a spacer like this woman doing on a gorram dustball like this? It wasn't as if there was much in the way of serious work here outside of farming. That was a fact that Chen was all-too aware of. She had come out here hoping to find some work that would do more than pay for the food she ate. Hell she had been hoping to get some better clothing for her to work in. She needed clothing just like any woman, even though she didn't give a good gorram about fashion. It was nice to be able to have clean fabric against her skin.

Noticing that her mug was now empty, Chen stood and walked over to the bar. As she ordered a second drink, the slender mercenary glanced over at the spacer.

"Hard times?" she asked with a chuckle, blowing a loose strand of black hair out of her eyes. "I can sympathize with that."

Dodge lounged against the bar and watched as the bartender poured her drink. She'd done a quick scan of the bar on the way in, but no one in the room seemed to be ships' folk, so her attention had just sort of slid over the young asian woman sitting on her own. Sure, it was a little odd for a woman to be drinkin' on her own in a place like this, unless of course, you were a woman like Dodge. She wasn't like the towns' folk, and everyone knew it and kept their distance from her and vice-versa. She had no particular urge to be overly friendly with any of 'em, and they certainly wouldn't give her the time of day.

So it was a bit surprising when she heard a voice addressing her. Slowly, she turned her head and gave the woman a once-over. She was petite, almost delicate looking, and dressed in pretty standard Chinese clothes. A local, maybe? If she was, she was a local who'd been through tough times. There was a certain set to the woman's jaw, a fierceness in her expression that told Dodge that this wasn't one of your average soft townsfolk.

"You don't know the half of it..." Dodge replied bitterly, and tipped back her glass. The whiskey was strong enough to strip paint with, but she got it down in one go without her eyes watering. Despite the taste, it hit the spot, burning pleasantly in her belly. She did a quick mental calculation of her day's earnings and figured she could spare enough for another glass. "Gimme another." She said to the bartender, setting the empty glass back on the bar with a 'thunk'.

She leaned against the bar while the bartender collected her glass and just looked at the other woman for a moment before breaking out into a sly grin. "You ain't from around here, are ya? I can tell." She said, tapping the side of her head with one callused finger. "Most of the locals don't got the balls to come talk to me, but you, you're alright."

She stuck out a hand. "Name's Nell, but most folk call me Dodge. Nice ta meet'cha."

Chen watched with a smile as the strange woman ordered another drink and then turned to look at her. Her smile turned sarcastic as she watched the woman hold out her hand. It was a callused hand. A working hand. But not in the way that these farm people's hands were. This was a hand that had seen combat; some manual labor, but not to the extent of most folk on the Frontier Planets.

Taking the offered hand, Chen nodded in the typical manner of a polite Chinese girl. Though anyone who knew her would laugh to think of her described as a 'polite' girl. She was a fighter and not a homemaker.

"Nice to meet you as well, Dodge," she replied. "My name is Cheng-Wang. Folks tend ta call me Chen or the Jade Dragon. But the latter is only if they get on my bad side," she added with a smirk. "And you're right that I'm not from around here. Just looking for work. With little success, as I'm sure you are partially aware. Pity these Frontier folk can't pay a decent wage for someone with skills like mine."

As her second drink arrived, Chen pulled her hand free of the very powerful grip of the taller woman to grab the mug. Downing whatever the hell kind of whiskey this was, Chen made a face at the taste before turning her attention back to the other woman. Idly, the mercenary let the fingers of her right hand wander over the lines of the intricate dragon tattoo on her right arm that wound around her wrist and ended on the top of her hand.

"What brings someone like you here to the edge of the known 'Verse?" she asked curiously. "It ain't often that folks like these see your type around here."

Nell took the woman's hand and gave it a hearty shake. She had a surprisingly firm grip for such a tiny hand, and Nell wondered if there wasn't more to this petite little woman than met the eye. The name, though, made her raise an eyebrow.

"The Jade Dragon? Haw! What are you, some kinda Kung-Fu Master or something?" She laughed, and then cocked her said sideways at the small woman. She wasn't laughing. "You know what? Don't answer that." She said, laughter fading to more of a smirk. "You'd probably have to kill me or something, right? I know how these things work, and if it's all the same to you, I'd rather be drinkin'."

She took another sip of her drink, savoring the warm feeling of the liquor now that she already had some in her. "An' I hear you about this being a piss poor place to look for work. Ain't work for no one around here, unless you're lookin' for a career as a professional farm hand." She snorted, casting a glower towards the table full of rowdy farm lads who were making some rather unflattering comments about the both of them. A few of them stopped making comments about her as soon as they got a look of her face, but that didn't much help the pretty little Chinese woman.

She turned back to her drink, ignoring them. "Stranded here." She muttered, finally answering the woman's question. "Was buying passage into the border worlds, where there's actual decent ports to find work at, when the First Mate decided that there was better ways for a woman to pay for passage than with platinum. I didn't take too kindly to that, so I laid him out. Pow!" She mimed swinging a punch, battering one thick fist into the palm of her other hand with a resounding 'thump'. Then she shrugged and sighed heavily.

"Captain kicked me off, next planet we passed. You?"

"To answer your question, no. I am not a Kung-Fu master. The name Jade Dragon comes from this," she said, holding up the jade pendant in the shape of a dragon she always wore. "That and those who get on my bad side don't tend to live long enough to regret it. Lucky for you, you're not on that list yet."

Chen arched an amused eyebrow at the woman's story. It wasn't often that you got a woman who would lay a man flat for even suggesting that they pay in their...feminine attributes. She herself had dealt with quite a few men who had not been able to take her seriously because she was a woman mercenary. A smirk crossed Chen's lips as she listened to Nell's story. How interesting.

"My story's a little less dramatic," she said with a laugh. "I heard that the people on this planet were willing to pay someone to keep troublemakers away from their farms. I hadn't had a decent job in a while, so I figured what the hell. Found my self on this gorram dustball with more people willing to question my ability with a firearm than to pay me to use that ability."

Scoffing lightly, Chen finished her drink and eyed the mug thoughtfully for a moment. Should she...? Alcohol didn't affect Chen the same way it did some folk. She had practically been raised with sake by her father, so her ability to hold down liquor had started at a young age. No. She wouldn't have another. She wanted to be able to keep the troublemakers off her back when she returned to the room she was renting from one of the local folk.

"Ain't often you find a place that'll accept a woman mercenary without question. At least, not on dustballs like this," Chen concluded with a scoff.

Nell listened to the other woman's story, sipping at her drink as she spoke. So the woman was some kinda mercenary, huh? Interesting... Nell had known more than a few mercenaries in her time, and even done a little work as one in between piloting jobs, but she'd be hard pressed to remember one who'd been so dainty looking. No wonder Chen was having problems finding work here. The locals weren't exactly open-minded about gender roles...

"Feh. You got that right." She said. "Around these parts, womenfolk are either schoolmarms or shopkeepers. Or, you know, good little wife-y types." If they'd been outdoors, Nell would have spat. As it was, she looked sourly around at the room and shook her head. "Gorram farm folk. They ain't like us, no sir. They're good, simple, boring people."

"Rough timing..." She continued. "I'm guessing you haven't been on planet long? There was a big dust-up here last week, just before I arrived. Town's been having troubles with some kinda gang for a while now, but a ship was by and they sorted 'em. Dragon Class vessel. Name of Solace, I believe. Seems like they cleaned up what little work there'd be for a merc on a planet like this. Hope you got yersself a backup plan, or you'll be stuck here like me." She finished, sourly. "Ain't a lot of ships pass by this way."

Chen listened to the explanation about the little mess that had been taken care of before her arrival and frowned darkly. "Jing Chai," she muttered sarcastically as she drummed the fingers of her tattooed right hand on the tabletop.

But the ship interested her. Dragon class...Idly Chen wondered if they were still here and hirin'. If they were, she would have to have a word with the captain of that vessel and see if she could hop onboard for a few platinum. God knew that she needed both the work and the money. Her weapons didn't buy ammo for themselves, after all. Out of habit, her left hand travelled to her thigh where she usually hid her small shotgun. Today she had left the thing with her rifle in the rooms she was renting, but she still had her lucky six-shooter strapped onto her waist.

"Wonder if this Solace is still here," she murmured thoughtfully. "Might see if they're hirin' and get me a decent job, which is more'n I can hope to get from these hillbillies," she added with a distastefull look at the surrounding farmers and farmhands. The sooner she was off this gorram dustball and on a nice ship with a few platinum in her pocket, the more citizens of this town full of backbirths would be alive or at least relatively healthy when she left.

Nell shook her head sadly, her cheerful smile of earlier replaced by a glower. "Nope. Solace pushed off day before I arrived. Can you believe that luck? The gorram day before I arrived." She thumped her palm down on the wooden bar and muttered a few colorful curses under her breath. "How's that for luck, huh? Gawd... And the way ships come by this place, it could be weeks, hell, maybe even months, before something touches down here again! Or, at least, anything that'll take passengers."

She glanced around, and leaned in conspiratorially. "Used to be," she whispered. "Used to be, smuggling ships'd be through here all the time, running goods for the gangs. Don't know how far the word's gone out yet, but it could be onna them might not have heard yet, and might still make a stop by. Local law's real good about turning a blind eye, or they used to be, at any rate."

She leaned back and shook her head, voice returning to a normal level. "But, that's just spec-u-lation. Maybe that's the ticket outta here, or maybe not. Way my luck's been running, I'd almost say it'd be 'Not'". She she said sourly. It had been a bad month, all around.

Chen couldn't help the feeling of disappointment at the news that the Solace was no longer here. And Nell was right; with the rate of how often smuggling ships came through this place they could very well be stuck for a good month before anything became available, if not longer. Frowning darkly to herself, Chen ordered another drink. Hell with not getting drunk. She could take large amounts of sake without getting drunk, so one more whiskey wasn't going to hurt her too much.

"Ai yah tien ah," she grumbled into the glass as she took a drink. "How wrin bu lai, whai wrin bu jwo..."

Whoa! As she swallowed the whiskey--which tasted more like something from the engine of a ship than alcohol--Chen was hard-pressed to not fall on the ground in a coughing fit. That stuff was powerful. Luckily her eyes weren't watering so much that it was noticeable after she had blinked a few times. Note to self: never take such a large gulp of local whiskey ever again.

"Well there goes one opportunity," she commented dryly before she shrugged. "But such is life. I'll just see if I can make a few platinum here before the next ship arrives. Then...I don't give a damn what kind of ship it is or what sort of cargo they're carrying, I am off this gorram dustball."
