"Is there any other point to which you wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime."
"The dog did nothing in the nighttime."
"That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes.

Gryphon set down her book and pinched her eyes. It was late, and she was getting a headache. Yes, she could have been using a reader, but the glow would have aggravated the dull ache behind her eyes.

She couldn't go to bed yet either, not until she'd finished running her tests. As the new medic onboard the Solace, she'd insisted that each crew member get a full check-up and blood work. The last of it was going through now- God, she missed techs. Back when she'd been with the Alliance, there had been people who would do all of these tedious tests for her.

On the other hand, she had quite emphatically disagreed with certain Alliance policies. She was better off out here, making her own way. Even if it meant that she had to run her own tests and bloodwork.

The doctor slid off her stool and went to go find something for her headache. She had at least another hour or two of work left to do- best if she were concious and not suffering while she waited...

It had been a whirlwind day for Nell Dodson. Captain Nass had given her a brief introduction to the crew, and then, more importantly, introduced her to the ship. Nell had spent several hours getting to know the old girl - her quirks, her temperment - all the little things that'd make a difference once they were out in the black. So far, she liked what she saw.

Nell had been lucky enough to fly a Firefly transport for a bit, hauling cargo between border worlds before her luck turned sour. She'd always liked the class of ships, but the Dragon class looked to be even more interesting to fly. It was a lot bigger than a Firefly for starters, and probably a little more gutsy, since they had space for a larger engine core. Her fingers were almost itching to get this thing off the ground...

She'd showered earlier to get the dirt & dust off of her, and caught a quick cat nap in her new quarters. Things were looking up. She hummed haphazardly to herself as she pulled on her cleanest set of clothes - though in her wardrobe, clean was a fairly relative term, meaning "least stained & torn up'. She sauntered through the door, eager to get another look at the controls before she grabbed some food, when she noticed a note stuck to the door.

Report to the med bay to get yourself checked out.

"Huh." She said to herself. "Well I'll be... Full medical and everything. Wonder if I get dental..." She smirked, and tucked the note in her vest pocket.

A few minutes later, she poked her head into the infirmary. It was late, by her estimate, but ships' folk kept wierd hours, and she wasn't too surprised to find the doctor still awake.

"Hey, doc." She said. "Captain sent me down here for a med e-val. You got time?"

Gryphon finished the glass of water she'd poured to go with her headache tablets and turned to look at the newcomer. Tall and muscular, she screamed 'spacer' with her no-shit attitude and shaved head.

"Plenty of time, luv," the doctor replied. Her accent put one in mind of a half-dozen trainwrecked together- mostly Coreward, with the crisp Ariel intonations sparring with a snarky Cockney pronunciation more reminiscent of Londinium being the primary ones. Unlike the newcomer, her own tattooes- a gryphon and a dragon- were hidden under the long sleeves of her shirt. "Don't 'ave much t' do til the centrifuge runs down. 'Cept read 'Olmes, of course." She gave the book's cover a loving pat as she went by, going to stand in front of the new woman.

Placing her hands on her hips, she looked her over thoroughly. Pilot, though not unskilled at other tasks. A practiced shot, judging by the callus on her trigger finger. That tattoo though... the Pangu's seal. Gryphon raised an eyebrow, surprised that the Captain would hire on the lone survivor of a Reaver attack. Well, that was the Captain's business. Gryphon herself was about as unsuperstitious as Holmes himself had been- she certainly didn't believe that Reavers would bother coming to hunt for an escapee.

"Pleasure, Nell Dodson," she said after a moment's inspection. "I'm Doctor Gryphon Lee, the one currently in charge of patching this ragtag band up after you go get yourselves battered t' bits."

Nell Dodson

At first glance, Nell liked this woman. Her mish-mash of accents were certainly pretty Core-heavy, but she seemed not to have the innate stick-up-her-ass-iness that most Core-worlders had. She must have been in space long enough for it to have worn off. But then Nell's eyes narrowed dangerously as the woman's gaze lingered just a little too long on her Pangu tattoo. She'd seen the woman's eyebrows raise. So, she'd heard of the Pangu, had she? Not too surprising, a lot of folks had... But what did this woman think of her, for surviving that mess?

There was a dangerous sort of silence in the medical lab. Nell watched the doctor warily, her eyes seeming to dare the other woman to say something, to make an issue out of it. Luckily for both of them, she didn't. She rather chirpily introduced herself, and Nell relaxed, putting on a friendly grin as if nothing had just happened.

"Pleased to meet you Doc." She said. "Nice to know there's someone around to glue us back together if we go get ourselves shot at. Last ship I was on, our cook was the one who stuck us back together, and he was real lousy with a needle and thread. Made great dumplings, though."

She shrugged, and then looked around the facility. It was small - no ship's med day was going to be partiularly large, not when they needed every inch they could get for cargo - but it seemed well stocked and clean. Pile of books on the table - seemed this woman had some books smarts, to boot. She squinted at the title, and then gave up. Nell liked her words in small, illustrated chunks, when she liked 'em at all.

"So, uh..." She said, jamming her hands into her pockets. "You're gonna want to bleed me or something?"

"You make me sound like a vampire, sayin' it like tha'," she replied with a wry little smile. "Fraid I will need t' get some blood from ye."

Gryphon crossed the infirmary with her usual birdlike, darting movement. One moment, she seemed to be standing in front of the pilot, the next, in front of the drawer where she kept her needles. Had Dodge blinked, she might have missed the transition from one place to the other entirely.

With practiced ease, she put a fresh needle tip on the syringe and dug out an antiseptic pad and tie. "Don't worry," she said, "I'm good at this- it'll only sting for a mo."

Again, that quick darting motion. It was no wonder that the infirmary floor was as clear as it was- otherwise, she would likey trip over something without realizing. Once more she stood in front of the new pilot. "Arm please."

"Well, that's what doc's do, innit?" She responded, grinning. "If they're not cuttin' at ya, they're bleedin' ya. Gorram unnatural is what is is." The wide grin and joking tone made it pretty clear that the spacer was joking - trying to see if she could get a rise out of the birdlike little doctor.

She blinked in surprised as the doctor flitted about the room, darting back and forth between the medical equipment like some kind of hummingbird. Huh... Nell wondered if the woman hadn't been sampling some of her own 'uppers'.

She strode deliberately over to the exam table, her firm, heavy footsteps an amusing contrast to the other woman's movements. She sat down, resting one elbow on her knee, and stuck out an arm. "All yours, doc. Bleed away."

"Oi, I only cut on folk t' put them back together," Gryphon replied. She hadn't missed the wryly amused look in the spacer's eye, either at the comment on doctors or upon seeing the way she moved. She had most certainly not been sampling any 'uppers'.

She briskly wound the tie around Dodge's bicep and waited a moment to let the vein in her elbow fill. There was certainly nothing to complain about concerning the shape the pilot kept herself in- the powerful muscles of her upper arm attested to that.

"Ever 'ad any clotting problems?" she asked, swiping down the other woman's skin with the antiseptic bag and neatly inserting needle into vein.

Nell looked away as the doctor stuck the needle into her arm. It made her uncomfortable - reminded her too much of the bits of metal the Reavers had forced through their skins.

"Clotting problems?" Nell asked, raising an eyebrow. "Nope, just bleedin' ones, and that's only when someone goes and puts a bullet in me." She grinned again. Even her accent - the slow, drawling talk of a Rim-worlder - contrasted with the small, energetic woman. They made an odd pair. "But you don't gotta worry about that too often. I imagine that since I'm working pilot instead of muscle, people won't be shooting at me quite as much as usual. Someone's gotta stay alive to fly this boat, after all."

She looked around the med bay again, trying to ignore the cold feeling of the needle in her arm. "Lessee... No ad-verse medical conditions to tell you about. I'm healthy as a horse - always been."

"Better you flying this bird than me," she said dryly. "I wold be likely t' crash and kill us all. Which would be a shame, as I am rather fond of living."

She withdrew the needle and capped it, setting it by the centrifuge to spin out once the current batch was done.

It was nice to hear that the woman considered herself healthy for the most part, though Gryphon was entirely used to patients lying during checkups. It was not uncommon; at least, when the person wasn't immediately screaming in pain from a bullet in their belly or the like. She'd seen more than a few soldiers slip into the fighting ranks by hiding their conditions even when said conditions would have had them relegated to non-combative positions.

Gryphon opened a new patient file on her tablet and began entering in information. "No troubles with eyesight or coordination?" she inquired.

Dodge grinned. "Well, I gotta say I'm pretty fond of livin' too. So I'll leave the cuttin' to you, and you leave the flyin' to me, and everyone should get on just fine."

Yup. This doctor definately wasn't the typical Coreworlder. She had a sense of humor, for starters. Nell wondered how long she'd been in the black, but didn't want to go prying just yet. There'd be enough time between when they launched and when they reached the next planet for talking. Besides, Nell knew better than most that a lot of spacers had real rough pasts, and were a little touchy about being asked.

She was glad when the blood-drawing part of the exam was done. Bleeding from a cut was one thing, bein' bled was something completely else. She flexed her arm to rid it of the lingering feeling of the needle under her skin. "I'd be a piss poor pilot if I did have troubles with coordination, now wouldn't I?" She replied to the doctor's question. "And I can see the target at the end of a shootin' rage real clear, so no troubles with my eyes."
