"New Dune Film from Paramount

We've been working on this for years, and we can finally make the proper announcement. Brian Herbert and I will be official co-producers on the film.

-- KJA

From Variety Daily (March 17, 2008):

Berg to direct 'Dune' for Paramount

Misher producing adaptation of sci-fi novel By TATIANA SIEGEL

Peter Berg is attached to direct a bigscreen adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel "Dune" for Paramount Pictures. Kevin Misher, who spent the past year obtaining the book rights from the Herbert estate, will produce via his Par-based shingle.

Herbert's 1965 novel is a sweeping, futuristic tale set on the remote desert planet Arrakis, which produces the interstellar empire's sole source of the spice Melange -- used for distant space travel. An empirewide power struggle ensues over the control of the spice. Berg would be the latest helmer to take a crack at the property, which spawned a 1984 David Lynch film as well as a 2000 Sci Fi Channel miniseries starring William Hurt.

The project is out to writers, with the producers looking for a faithful adaptation of the Hugo- and Nebula Award-winning book. The filmmakers consider its theme of finite ecological resources particularly timely.

New Amsterdam's Richard Rubenstein, who produced Sci Fi's "Dune" and sequel "Children of Dune," is also producing alongside Sarah Aubrey of Film 44, Berg's production banner. John Harrison and Mike Messina exec produce.

Paramount envisions the project as a tentpole film.

Berg and Misher enjoy strong ties dating back to Misher's executive days at Universal Pictures. Misher also produced Berg's second directorial outing, "The Rundown." Actor-turned-helmer Berg most recently directed the upcoming Will Smith starrer "Hancock." His directing credits include "The Kingdom" and "Friday Night Lights."

The Article

Yes! I'm totally excited about this!

The last two movie adaptations of the book Dune have been, in many fans opinions, not nearly as good as what they could have been. This will finally give the book a chance to have a motion picture worthy of its name. =D

Nope, not yet. The only reliable information that has been released yet is what was in that article.

Yeah, both of the previous movie adaptations were okay, but they left out some key things or change some things such as Feyd's fight in the arena. As for the sandworms, I think that the mini series did a wonderful job of presenting them to making them look really cool and at the same time accurate. The biggest problem I have with the mini series are the actors the chose for the roles of the characters.

I agree. william hurt provided a weak performance in my opinion. I wonder if the nw movie will have any big to semi-big actors in it! Angelina Jolie as Serina Butler! lol most of it will be CG I assume, like the ThinkingMachines and other stuff. btw you DO it's chandler, right?

Funny, but Serena Butler and the Thinking Machines are long gone by this point in the Dune timeline. That took place ten and a half thousand years before the original Dune. XP

As for CG, the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that would need CG are the sandworms. Maybe some of the weapons and props, too. And probably the body shields.

And as for actors, personally, I'd rather see actors that I either haven't heard of before, or are not well known. That way, I can see some fresh faces on the big screen.

And yes, I know it's you, Chan.

O.o Like, New People Trying To Go Into Acting? But If They Don't Use The Same Characters Wouldn't Be Confusing? (Like, Harry Potter, In The Movie He Is The Same Person)

Naw, it won’t be confusing for a number of reasons.

For one, I always picture characters how they are described in the books, and not in the movies. For another, if they decide to continue the series past the first few novels, they are going to be entering another part of the Dune timeline, currently unexplored by film. For a third reason, most of the actors from the first two film adaptations were terrible. XP

Now then, the main reason that they are using different actors is because each film adaptation is made by a different company. The 1984 movie was made by David Lynch, and the 2000 mini series was made by Artisans, and the upcoming movie will be made by Paramount. I’m estimating a summer of 2009 release.

As a side note, one thing that the 1984 David Lynch movie had that none of the other versions could, or will be able to possibly beat, is Sting's role as Feyd-Rautha. He played it so psychotic and accurate. XD
