I was wondering if any body out there knows anyway of catching smallmouth in dark stained water? The visibility of the lake is about 2 to 3 feet, the water isn't cloudy at all it is just a very dark rootbeer color. The temperature of the surface is 72.4 degrees. There are reports of 4 to 5 lb smallmouth beening caught but not by me. Thanks for your input. |

Always had good luck with a rattle and rap body bait or try a jig with some bait. |

Bright colours like fire tiger and stuff help on medium sized crank baits. The rattle and thump help bass hone in on them. Try some tubes and shads. Here is a link to an excellent article on worms........ http://www.in-fisherman.com/magazine/articles/if2902_smbWorms/index1.html |

try a brown 3.5 inch tube jig. The dark tube will silloette well in that water. |

most of the lakes around here are very dark water as well, I've always had good luck with tubes of different colour. I always think, If your not sure just throw a tube out there and it usually works. Bass fishing of course. |

Thanks for the tips guys, on day two of the tournament we weighed in a five fish limit of 19.86 lbs. We broke off a couple of real beauties at the side of the boat on day one so we only weighed in 14.58. with five fish. Edited by joe, Aug 20 2008, 08:04 PM.

Find the drop-offs and the cover. Rock piles, trees, etc close to deep water. Jigs, tubes and so on as mentioned above. |
