Hey all ...

made it out to Muskoka again this winter....to try a spot that produces pike in the spring and summer...

and since Iwe had never icefished on lake muskoka before....thought it might be as good a time as any...

we set up in the most un-used and unlikely spot....just to see what might develope

right at the pier in Gravenhurst....

the ice was a good 19 to 20 inches about 14" clear and 6" white on top plus

a little water.....

it was sunny and warm....about plus 6...

quite a few people were interested in how we were doing ....since I dont think to many people icefish here...

we talked to alot of people out for a warm day stroll....

It wasnt long before (to my surprize) before my rod took a good bounce....and I set the hook...

and It had some weight to it....but the fish head shook and was gone....

a couple mins later...the other rod goes down....and this little guy was on the other end...lol

we fished the spot for about another hour before a guy (avid fisherman) came along walking with his wife and kids and told us of another spot.....where just last week he had managed a 29 lber pike....

and swore to us the walleye were in their thick as well....

so we packed things up got a bite to eat....and headed off to the other spot....

it was quite a long walk out for us about 2.5kms....thru the slush....

but once we got there.....it was time to rest and fish....

we set up in about 44 feet of water....and fished for a couple hours with only a nibble or two...

and figured all the activity on the finders was none other than smelts....

the locals also fishing this spot were nice enough to come over and give us some tips...

and the best water depths etc....and so we moved in shallower where they were fishing....

and the backed up the guys story we had talked to in gravenhurst....

I have always said the local know best....and if you are friendly....they dont mind sharing some of their experiences

we found out the average walleye's in this spot were all over 5 lbers and with the slot size we would at best only be able to take one fish.....since they hardly ever caught any under 18"

still the only thing we marked was smelts....and plenty of them....

here is ratherbe's smelt caught on a lure...(isnt it cute????)

one thing I do know is where the smelts are the trout and eyes wont be too far away....

the day light was fading and we hadnt brought lights.....so we packed it up....and headed in...

some of the locals were just coming out to fish....which meant they were doing the evening bite...into the dark

next time we check out this spot we will come prepared with a lantern...

all in all a slow days fishing but when ever you are hitting a lake that is new to you...

you can only expect to get a small sample of what a spot has to offer....

keep on drillin
