A method that is particularly good, especially for rear loops, is to use braided running line for the loop. This method takes some time, but it produces a loop of any desired size and is exceptionally strong if you add a couple of nail knots. ![]() Step #1. Cut off several inches of braided line, and insert a braiding needle (available at most fly shops that sell the braided line). You can fold a piece of fine stainless leader wire back on itself to form a tight loop and use that if you don't have a braiding needle. ![]() Step #2. Run the needle up the braid about 2 inches, and push it through the side. Catch the end of the braid and pull it back through itself forming the loop. Put the loop around something to keep it from coming all the way through if you should pull too hard. ![]() Step #3. Insert a needle that is larger in diameter than the braid as far as it will go, then heat with hot water. Follow with cold water. This will expand and set the braid making the next step easier. ![]() Step #4. Insert the fly line and work it into the braid until it butts against the base of the loop. Put a tiny drop of Zap-A-Gap just at this junction. Do not use much or capillary action will cause the cement to flow into the braid, which will destroy the effectiveness of this connection. ![]() Step #5. Add a nail knot to the rear of the braid and trim excess braided material. Add another nail knot on the braid just below where it meets the fly line. Some people report braided loops slip, but done this way they will break before they slip. |
