1582 Oda Nobunaga was on a conquest to control and unify Japan, a feat not yet accomplished. Nobles siding with the Daimyo's Campaign were given land under the new regime to hold as they say fit. In exchange for province control each clan had to pay a percentage of its wealth to the Daimyo each year. During the campaigns they served as a last line of defense for the lands each helping however they could.
In the peak of his power Nobunaga ordered a former Sandal Bearer, Hashiba Hideyoshi, to invade the Bitcshu Province and lay siege to Takamatsu Castle. Takamatsu was a vital point to the Mori clan protecting their domain form outside invasions. Losing it would leave their lands vulnerable to the armies of Nobunaga. The Mori quickly gathered reinforcements holding off Hideyoshi's men and leaving the battle at a standstill. Hideyoshi requested reinforcements to take the Castle and seat themselves in the Mori lands.
Nobunaga was in route to the Chūgoku region and stopped at Kyoto to stay at Honnō-ji. There he dispatched his two generals. Niwa Nagahide was to go and prepare for an invasion of Shikoku while Akechi Mitsukide was to supply reinforcements to Hideyoshi at Bitcshu. Nobunaga settled in feeling confident that his safety in the heart of his lands was assured.
Once his forces were dispersed Mitsuhide turned on his Lord surrounding Honnō-ji setting the temple on fire. Inside Mitsuhide found his Lord and forced the Lord to fight him. Mitsuhide was on a path of vengeance form Nobunaga's direct orders to have Mitsuhide's mother killed. In the end Mitsuhide was victorious and forced Nobunaga to commit Seppuku. His body was left in the temple as it burned down.
Nevertheless, Mitsuhide suddenly had Honnō-ji surrounded in a coup d'état, forcing Nobunaga to fight him. Nobunaga lost and was forced to commit seppuku. When they found out about the assassination, both Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu rushed to be the first to avenge Nobunaga and take his place. Hideyoshi got to Mitsuhide first, and Mitsuhide's allies such as Hosokawa Fujitaka, who was related to Mitsuhide through a marriage, betrayed him. Mitsuhide survived for 13 days until he was defeated by Hideyoshi at the Battle of Yamazaki.
1588 Under the rule of Hideyoshi, the campaign continued to do what his Lord has not lived to succeed. The Clans Nobunaga had honored were greatly appreciated by his successor being used both on the front lines but also keeping the rule and safety of the lands he had already claimed. As the Empire under Hideyoshi grew the clans were permitted to command there land as they saw fit often going to war with each other over the land and wealth each contorted. However, during the winter months warfare could not be wages without severe drawbacks. Thus during the winter months the clans often gathered to pay tribute to their Emperor.
In the dark of a winter’s night a spy in the Sagami Province reported seeing a figure representing the former Lord's image traveling to Odawara Castle. Angered by someone trying to take the image of his former Lord, Hideyoshi sent an army forward to Odawara Castle, only one of which returned. When he spoke of what he saw walking the Castle, Hideyoshi sought out the Clans his Master had trusted. Each was promised a fortune for bringing back the head of this impersonator. Hideyoshi never spoke of what the man had told him that frightened him so.
