Character Template [-----] Account Name: ♥ Tengu Basic Character Information Name: Maru Maru Nickname: "Soft Belly" Age: 37 Gender: Male Race: Human Affiliation: Other Threat: 187 Achievements: Profession: Smith A Smith is a man or woman who makes weapons and tools out of metal. Generally swords, since they fetch the best price, but it is in no way limited to this. Making cannons and parts for inventors is also part of their business, and they also get good knowledge within metallurgy which allows them to make custom materials or mix new ones together. A smith is proficient in any melee weapon they make, and have no maximum rank limit for martial techniques involving these weapons. They have access to certain additional traits as well. Artisan An artisan makes his living making art in a variety of mediums, including the likes of painting, sculpting, and poetry. They have some form of talent for such things, but whether other people actually like their work is more up to personal taste than anything. Position: Ronin Physical Appearance Height: 6'1" Weight: 175 lbs Hair: Black topknot with an egg-shaped top Eyes: Black, shaped like sideways eggs Clothing/Accessories:A simple man of simple means, Maru prefers clothing that is rather plain and hangs loosely on his body with a priority being freedom of movements. Most times, this translates to solid color robes that seem to always be on the verge of falling off that are held in place by a similarly drab cloth belt that he keeps his two swords slung. He tends to wear these outfits until they are absolutely unusable and are little more than rags, which has resulted in them often being sloppily hand patched and stained with ink and paint once they have been worn for a while. Straw-soled sandals are his go-to foot wear sans socks due to a hate of anything constrictive on his body. General Appearance: A deceptively lithe individual, Maru’s body wouldn’t exactly jump out as one of a hardened and deadly warrior, amplified by a distinct lack of scars across most of his body. However, when his robes slide around as they tend to do a massive network of scars across his stomach just above his belly button reveals itself. More apparent than his very lightly muscled body is his oddly egg-shaped head that is pure white rather than the normal skin tone of the rest of his body. Most features on his head are similarly shaped, including his bulbous egg-shaped nose, his sideways egg-like eyes, and egg shaped end of his top knot. Despite the abundant goofiness of his appearance, this is kept somewhat in check by the thick and permanently furrowed brow of a hardened killer. Spoiler: click to toggle The Character Personality: Maru Maru is a man that is both troubled by his past and desperately striving to find some form of enlightenment. After spending most of his life as something of a crook in shining armor operating under the banner of royalty, Maru has adopted the strictest definition of the bushido code possible of his own design in order to make up for his years following no form of the code. This code has made him honor-bound to help those he finds in need of help so long as the cause is noble, restricted him to a life of relative poverty, and most notably has imposed the highest form of punishment for any code infractions in seppuku. The strictness of his code combined with his hard to shake habits and the utility of his devil fruit means that the excruciatingly painful ceremony is a daily occurrence at best. Old habits dying hard, Maru is something of a compulsive liar by nature that is inclined to take what he wants when he wants it- urges that the samurai fights constantly. In order to fight the temptation of his past demons, most of the time he keeps his dominant hand resting on the short sword of his pair as to not let him take things carelessly. His short sword is also his tool of choice for seppuku and the worn and dull blade that he hasn’t sharpened since he became a Ronin is a heavy reminder of the pain that comes with betraying his code. Maru’s compulsion to bend the truth is a bit harder to tame, and het mainly opts to put on a strong silent act to eliminate the possibility to lie altogether. In a more holistic attempt to improve himself, Maru has rededicated himself to more artistic disciplines in favor of using the sword to solve all of his problems. Painting and calligraphy are large interests to him, and though he lacks technical proficiency in both arts he finds them to be cathartic and relaxing in practice. Wood carving is another discipline he has taken up, often turning bits of stray wood into clumsy totems using his primary sword as a makeshift chisel. Lastly and most apparently in his list of artistic pursuits is poetry, which he uses as a tool to avoid lying when he has to speak. Most of this time this translates to haiku, as trying to organize his thoughts in the format slows him down and makes him think about what he is going to say. Swordsmanship is a bit of a difficult subject for Maru to wrap his head around. To him, swords are both tools and works of art and on their own cannot be good or evil. Just as he is trying to purify himself, he strives to lift the burden from his blade by working with it to become more noble. In order to become more spiritual in his connection with the sword and his understanding of them, he has dedicated himself to the practice of forging blades rather than simply using them. Though his swordsmanship has become slightly worse since he rededicated himself from a technical standpoint, he considers himself a better and more well-rounded warrior overall. Hometown: Wano, New World History: Born and raised in the land of Wano, ever since he was a little boy Maru Maru was groomed to be a noble samurai serving under a daimyo and eventually the shogun himself. Even as a child, Maru was a natural at the art of the sword and had a certain smarm about him that made him the center of attention wherever he went. Tall, handsome, skilled, and of minor noble birth he always able to get what he wanted when we wanted it or cut down those who didn’t follow his numerous demands. His natural talent and high birth proved more than enough to put him a position of power when he got older, acting as one of a daimyo’s most highly regarded lieutenants by the time he was in his 20’s. However, despite being older, stronger, and more knowledgeable than he was as a young boy, his attitude changed little between then. Where he used to take sweets and bully the other children when he was little, he was now a powerful samurai tasked with collecting taxes from the people of Wano. A lucrative job to say the least, Maru quickly began to line his pockets with excess money taken on top of the already steep taxes of the land, the Daimyo uncaring so long as he got the amount he was supposed to receive. Where his partially diplomatic immunity didn’t help him, his wicked blade did, cutting down men, women, and children alike by the dozens during his time as a samurai. As far as he was concerned, the world was on his plate and everything was for the taking without consequence. For the longest time, it was. This changed the day the daimyo grew ill in his old age with no heir in place to boot. It was a condition that had taken everyone in that man’s bloodline and one that Maru knew well of, but also one that wasn’t a concern to him. His years of service had made him extravagantly wealthy to the point that he would never have to want for anything ever again, so the samurai was actually more than ready to retire and live a life of luxury. Unfortunately for him, the code that he was supposed to be living his life by up until that point finally caught up with him. The Bushido Code demanded that as a samurai whose master had died, Maru was ordered to either commit seppuku himself with honor or be executed and be regarded for the rest of history as a coward. Everything he had worked for was being taken from him, and the mere thought was enough to make him want to vomit the first time he was told of his fate. Eventually though, bitterness turned to desperation. He knew he had lived a wicked life, and now that he was at death’s door he would have to own up for all that he had done. He was scared, but all he could do was accept the fate of seppuku and hope that it would be enough to atone, if even just a little. Before he knew it, the day had come. A lavish spread of foods and sake were laid out before the samurai to give him a grand send off to the beyond, but in his fear and his apprehension, eating was the last thing he was worried about. Only after a bit of prodding did he sheepishly take one tiny morsel- a piece of fruit. Bile is all that he could taste after his master had died, and all that he could taste then. His time had come. He took a deep breath. He held his tanto by the cloth around its blade. He plunged it into his stomache. Warmth, stench, pain. It was over. And then it was undone. Shooting up with a gasp, Maru broke out in a cold sweat as he struggled to get his bearings, only to find himself in the same room he had died in, surrounded by the same people who were there when he met his fate, though all were perplexed at best and horrified at worst. He hadn’t survived and the wound was in fact fatal, but he was still there all the same, albeit in a grotesque avian form. As confused as the officials were, Maru was soon dismissed since he had technically done his duty and bore the burden that was required of him. However, since he had died, he lost everything he had accumulated including his lavish home, vast fortune, and political position only being allowed to keep his swords after the fact. Maru wept. He was a wicked man that deserved nothing but death, but he was still alive. Some force in the universe had decided to spare him, though whether that was a blessing or a curse was unclear. Still, experiencing death gave him the greatest sense of clarity he had ever felt. He was given another chance and decided to change his path to one of righteousness. He was saved.
