It was a beautiful day. The sun shone brightly in a cloudless sky. The seagulls squawked over head. The ocean currents were calm and the water was pleasantly cool. There could not be a more perfect day...to wash ashore. Millo drifted on the soft currents haphazardly clinging to a barrel full of salt that bobbed on top of the ocean surface. His hat was soaked and pulled halfway down his face by the weight of the water. His skin was wrinkled from the moisture and his clothes were thoroughly wet. He lacked the sword he usually carried having broken it on his last adventure and instead replaced it temporarily with an odd transforming little girl. Friends however were short lived and after parting ways he found himself bound back for safer seas. Or at least that was the idea when a rogue wave took out the ship he had charted and left him drifting to shore wherever here was.

Millo's barrel washed up onto the sand and he flopped off of it. His chest heaving as the water washed around him calmly. He couldn't even be bothered to drag himself up to dryer sand at he moment. Instead he pulled his hat off and rolled over squishing the water from his clothes and sputtering up water from his airways. Once his lungs were clear he rolled over once more and heaved a heavy sigh. "Man, screw the ocean." A few minutes of rest. That's all he wanted. Just a few minutes. Millo's breathing came slower. His eyes were heavy. The sand was warm. There was even a pleasant scent on the air that was just so relaxing. He really just didn't have a care in the world that could make him get up from where he was and he breathed softly as his eyes drifted closed.

Eldon Stammets was very busy. He had found a little patch of damp wood near the ship's kitchen and had found no less than three different species of mould growing on it. "What do you mean I can't put it in a little jar?!" he had asked the ship's captain when the man came along to tell him that no, that area was off limits to passengers and would Eldon please go back to his quarters.

Eldon Stammets had noted that his quarters were, in fact, very dry and very sunny and those were exceedingly poor conditions for moulds! His specimens, the very few he'd been able to bring along, very very few indeed because he'd had to travel light, needed the damp and the dark and the cool. And, glory be, he'd found that place right near the kitchens where they stored all the other things that needed the cool dark damp.

"You must be crazy! Bringing mould into the larder! It's all we can do keeping it OUT!" the captain had shouted.

"It'll be fine! Look, there's already mould there! A gigansetia bougainsvillea if I'm not wrong," Eldon Stammets had cheerfully replied, and unturned a sack of potatoes. "See? You can smell it a mile off, it's got that very particular smell of apples turning to cider inside a potato," he said, and the captain and all the cooks had stared wordlessly at him.

And so the upshot of it was that nobody had had any potatoes during the entire voyage from Boin, and Eldon Stammets had been shooed back to his room whenever anybody caught him outside in the corridors. It also meant that Eldon had started sleeping at odd hours so that he could wake up in the middle of the night and go down to the kitchen to visit the damp spot where the moulds were, and to get fresh water for his own jars of fungi. There had been a few close calls and certainly at least one time where he'd gotten caught, but so far nothing too bad had happened other than the captain getting into high dudgeon!

"ALL ASHORE!" rang the cries up and down the ship, which woke Eldon up. He sat on his bed blearily, rubbing at his grimy face. "GILLIGAN, GILLIGAN! ALL ASHORE AT GILLIGAN!"

Eldon sniffed the air. That sure smelled nice! He beamed. "Gilligan, eh?"

"Yeah," said the crewman who was passing by his room with a clothespin on the nose. It made his words come out funny. "All ashore!"

"Right," said Eldon cheerfully, picking up his jars and stowing them away in his clothes. "Gilligan! Even sounds nice!"

Scooting her way to the front of a limo, Pepper opened the small, tinted glass pane separating the two sides, complaining, “What’s going on up there? Why’re we stopping here?! I refuse to pay for your services if you’re not going to get me anywhere near the destination!”

Pepper’s face had a mixture of frustration, confusion, and worry, three emotions that usually bubble up when she gets flustered. If it was hard to tell, Pepper was indeed flustered. She had hired a fancy amphibious limo to take her to another island so she could discover new ingredients, but apparently they were stranded on some deserted island in the middle of nowhere now. Her worry was increasing by the second. Only seconds had passed since she asked her questions, but she was already getting impatient.

As Pepper’s feet tapped on the floor of the limo, the driver nervously responded, “T-the limo’s broken down apparently. The engine started to act up since we entered the area around the island, and now something else feels like it’s been damaged, ma’am.” Taking a pause, he lowered his head a bit in shame, adding, “We will have to dock on this island temporarily until the limo is repaired, m-ma’am.”

Running her hands through her hair and pulling her head back in frustration, Pepper groaned, “Fine, but please, get it done soon! I’ll pay extra if I have to!”

With some final sputters, the limo’s tires rolled onto the beach. Now on the shore of the island, Pepper cracked open the door of the limo and stepped out onto the white sand. The driver was already getting out and walking to the back to push the limo further onto shore.

“You need help with that?” Pepper asked, mildly annoyed, but feeling obliged to do so.

“No need, ma’am. Customers should not be required to aid in the repair of the vehicle. You are paying for our services, after all.”

Nodding her head, Pepper turned around to face the rest of the island, largely covered in foliage. Looking down, she saw a piece of driftwood with bite marks on it. There was a particular aroma lurking around, and Pepper’s refined sense of smell definitely caught a whiff of it. It made her feel somewhat woozy, but she quickly got used to it. Nothing compared to the smell of her father’s restaurant in its prime, anyway. Crossing her arms, she began to think. Maybe she could find some interesting ingredients here. Preparing for the worst, she loaded some potatoes into her cyborg arms. Popping out a french fry from her right palm like a toaster and grabbing it between her giant fingers, she began snacking a bit. Maybe it would help her think better.

Millo lay on his back, halfway in the tide, halfway on the sand. His face was the picture of relaxation and he moved in small jerks and twitches. The exhaustion of floating ashore and the pleasant relaxing atmosphere had lulled him quickly to sleep. He would probably have remained asleep too if it weren't for a small crustacean which came scuttling over the sand. Confused and wary the small crab investigated the washed ashore chef. A sudden twitch caused the crab to spook and it snapped it's claw at Millo catching him on the ear. The sudden pain jolted him awake and upright. "Gyaah! Ow ow ow ow ow ow!" Millo swatted at his ear until the crab let go and plopped into the sand. It immediately began scuttling but Millo wasn't about to let this go. He pounced on the crab catching it and stuffing it in his still wet hat.

Realizing the weight of his wet clothes and the salt crust which covered everything dry the chef stood up properly and looked around. The beach he was on was featureless and perfect. White sands. Tall palms. Clear water with plenty of fish swimming about. What a pleasant place to be. He tied his hat off to keep the crab from escaping and began to wander the shoreline in the afternoon sun. The breeze was chilly due to his dampness but the constant sunshine ensured that would be remedied shortly. A rumble in his stomach alerted him to the time, eating time, however he lacked any proper utensils. Millo put a hand to his chin as he walked. There must be something on this island he can use to cook. Maybe a few flat slab rocks in the sunlight? Driftwood might make a decent fire if he can find a way to start one. How could he prepare crab though?

His explorations carried him down the beach picking and searching. He couldn't boil it without a bucket of some sort. He could probably just toss it on the fire. Maybe he could come up with a big solid plank or log to use as a good platform to cook on. The chef's musings continued much like this until he kicked a rock and managed to wake from his thought due to the sudden pain. He grumbled. This island almost seemed to be deliberately causing him pain. Why was there a rock buried in the sand? Millo knelt down investigating and found several rocks in a rough circle. The remnants of ashes buried by the sand. He appeared to be in a small camp of some sort or, maybe just a bonfire pit?

"Sounds nice?" said the crewman, doubtfully.

"It isn't nice?" said Eldon, pausing in the middle of deciding which specimen should go in the middle. That was always the trouble with having so many favourites! It was so hard to arrange them! "Anyway, tell me! Should the estatic spikelet go here, or the gold bag, do you think?" he asked the crewman, holding out the two different specimen jars. "See, the ecstatic spikelet really likes the warmth, and it's a sunny day, but it likes it way too much for its own good, moulds are like that a bit don't you think?" He frowned. "And it's already had its three hours in the sun yesterday so I should put the gold bag out -"

"...Gilligansoundsniceit'saperfectlygoodname!" shouted the crewman over his shoulder, departing at high speed. "I'msorryIhaveotherthingstodothanksfortravellingwithusseeyounexttime!"

"Oof," said Eldon disappointedly. He looked between the two again, and sighed fondly. "Well, I suppose I get to choose to spoil you again!" he said to the ecstatic spikelet, and tucked it into the outermost part of his clothing where it would get the most of the sunshine outside. "I'll just have to spray you a bit more in the evening if you get too thirsty, you naughty thing!" And laughing, Eldon left his cabin. On the way through the corridor, a thought occurred to him.

"I bet that gigansetia bougainsvillea down by the kitchen must be feeling pretty lonely right about now, don't you think?" he wondered out loud. "The chefs and all the other crew people must be outside the ship doing their own things. I bet they wouldn't miss a little bit of wood!" He paused. "And anyway I did pay them enough so it should be perfectly fine, let me see, aha! Got an empty jar!"

He beamed and strolled away down the corridor. He got the wood and the mould growing on it and put them both in his jar, which he carefully tucked away so that if he met any crew people on the way out they wouldn't get all huffy. He stood on the beach, beaming in the bright sunny breeze. It was beautiful weather, though not exactly mould weather, and anyway you tended to get only a few kinds of mould at the seaside. Eldon thought he'd seen them all.

"But that's not a good attitude to have when Going Out Exploring," he scolded himself, and began making his way down the sandy shores. "I wonder if there's anything around!" he said. "There, that's a better attitude!"

Wiping some residue off her lip, Pepper managed to smear some blue lipstick on her large, metal thumb. It was usually pretty hard to get this stuff off without making a mess. If she tried licking it off, the blue coloring on her tongue made it worse. And all her clothes were white or gray. Sighing, she figured it would eventually dry or something. Looking through the forest, Pepper realized it would probably be a smart move to scout the beach before anything. Who knew what could have been lurking deeper into the island. Maybe it actually was inhabited, but not by friendlier people. With caution, she tread the sands, looking for anything of interest. That was when Pepper saw a figure in the distance. He was dressed in plain clothes and looked rather ragged. With a wary eye, she approached, making sure the figure was not hostile. He seemed to be inspecting the ground. Judging by his modern clothing, he seemed like he was not from this island,

After swallowing another french fry, Pepper asked Millo, “Excuse me… A-are you stranded here too…?”

Somewhat intimidated by the fact that she was alone with a stranger on a possibly deserted island, Pepper slipped her large cyborg arms through her jacket sleeves and wrapped jacket gently around her body, covering up at least some of herself. It was way too hot to button it up. Pepper then saw the crab the man was holding. Must of been what he was planning to have for his lunch. Was he looking for a way to cook it?

Nervous to ask, still unsure if this guy was hostile or not, she stuttered, “M-my parts can process food if you want a quick meal out of that crab…”

Millo had set himself to uncovering the old campsite. He shoveled sand aside with his hands as best he could and fully uncovered the crude fire pit though whatever seating if any had appeared to have been moved or washed away ages ago. It was a simple beach side encampment. Probably for nothing more than getting through the first night. Millo clutched at his hat tightly and put a hand to his chin descending once more into thought. He could probably gather some drift wood, or make use of the barrel of salt he floated in on to start a fire. Ahh, if only there was some kind of civilization around, he wasn't prepared to live here at all.

The sudden intrusion to both Millo's peaceful thought and his solitude set off alarms in his baser instincts. He jumped at the voice and immediately shifted into a defensive stance. Why did he let his guard down? Normally he was a lot more perceptive. The initial surprise ran aground quickly when that word came out. Stranded. Yeah. That sounds about right. Millo took the moment of awkward silence to inspect the girl talking to him. Her forearms were mechanical? She seemed to be nervous and now that she was in full view Millo's wasn't getting any feeling of a threat from her.

"Crab?" Millo glanced down at his hat and saw that the crafty bugger had clipped his way through the fabric and was hanging from his escape hole. Millo's hands flashed to the creature and captured it again keeping it's wriggling and snapping claws far away from him. "Yeah uh, that's the idea. Woke up here. Where is here exactly?" Millo hadn't put much thought into it but if this girl here was a local then maybe she could help. Wait, she said she was stranded. Didn't she? "You don't know either. Do you?" Millo didn't need to hear the answer really. He turned away and sighed. "Catch." Millo tossed the crab over his shoulder to the girl. Her hands were metal so it's not like she was in danger, his hat however, was now in tatters and he frowned at it. "Name's Millo."

Eldon strolled along the edges of the sea. The sandy parts of the beach seldom tended to have anything really interesting, in his experience - just people, and people were really just... everywhere, he guessed? You never seemed to have a real lack of people anywhere anyway! But the bits of the beach where the water only sometimes was, now there lay all the interesting things. There weren't a lot of salt-water mosses or fungi, but there were some, and that hope was enough to keep him going along the beach.

"But maybe just not along this part of the beach?" he mumbled to himself, ambling along; he was a large man, and he was hunched over something dreadful, peering at the little stones and beach-parts as he went. "It's awfully clean, so far, and that's never a good thing is it? I wonder if there's people out there who came along here and did the cleaning up! Never thought of those things." But maybe there were those things? Eldon G Stammets didn't have a super clear conception of other people's priorities but he knew they sometimes had irrational levels of care about how clean some things looked. So maybe somebody had gone up and down the beach cleaning away the interesting bits because they didn't look nice, which was absolutely something Eldon thought people did.

He frowned. "Guess I'll have to hope they missed out something!" he said to himself to buoy himself up, because that was also something people did a lot. He looked up, because the sun was getting kind of hot on the back of his neck and that was a bit uncomfortable. He'd wandered far enough from the docks on his search that there weren't all that many people around; actually, there were just two people near him! He'd wandered close enough on accident to hear the last bit of their conversation. It looked like it was lunch-time for Millo and... the other lady?

"Hello!" called Eldon, beaming and waving his hand energetically as he strolled up to them. "Are you here to clean the beach? I'm looking for some new friends, I got a new gigansetia earlier today from a ship but you can never have too many! Did you see anything while you were going up and down? Only I haven't been able to see anything, it's all so clean, good job!"

It looked like the guy Pepper was talking to was also stranded here. Hopefully it would turn out to be a stroke of luck. As he talked, Pepper saw him toss the crab, which she caught. She then heard his name. Apparently he called himself Millo. Flicking a bolt on the side of her right arm, Pepper stuffed the live crab in, seeing it foam slightly as it was pressed in. Steam puffed out the arm violently as it cooked the meat of the crab. From seemingly nowhere, she also procured a potato, opening the hatch again and throwing that in. She also had not noticed it while creating her dish, but someone had walked up behind them. Was he with the Millo guy in front of her?

Regardless, Pepper walked up to the greenery behind them, squatting down to look for any kinds of greens. With a slight grin of satisfaction, she stripped the leaves off of one of the plants, opened the hatch on her right arm again with her left pinky, and threw the leaves in. Perfect! With the meal ready, Pepper then looked around for a big leave to use as a plate, which she found quickly. Giving it a quick sniff, she concluded it was nothing bad. Hopefully. Walking back over to the newly formed group, she took a seat on a nearby dried up log and stretched her arms and legs out, keeping her legs outwards, but bring her arms back in. Placing the big leaf on her lap, Pepper positioned her palm downwards and dispensed three cakes onto it. With a quick movement, she opened the hatch and dumped out a pile of incinerated crab shell behind her. Holding each end of the leaf carefully, she raised the leaf and held it out, offering the cakes to Millo and the new guy.

“The name’s Pepper Jack. Not sure what the new guy’s talking about, but I’m also stranded here.” Looking to one side of the beach with her head, Pepper added, “I was traveling to another island, but my ride broke down and ended up over in that direction. The thing should be fixed soon. By tonight at least.”

Unthrilled to be the woman between two guys on a deserted island, Pepper cracked a nervous smile as she held out the crab cakes.

Millo watched with an interested expression as Pepper went about just dunking the crab into her arm. Cybernetics weren't a foreign thing, he had encountered them briefly before and he knew their was a market for them but they really were strange when examined up close. Waiting patiently Millo took up a seat in the once-upon-a-time campsite. The scent of something foul reached his nose. Perhaps her cybernetic cooking wasn't as good as Millo was expecting it be, or maybe that crab was bad somehow? Millo was going to say something but the unexpected greetings from behind them caught his attention. Turning he spotted the real source of the odor. A large lumbering man approaching in an almost upsettingly happy manner.

Millo had no clue what the large man now assaulting him with both scent and sound was talking about. He was closer to beach trash himself than he was to being someone here to clean the beach up. Millo accepted the offering of crab cake while still eyeing the new comer suspiciously. He idly bit into it and found to his surprise it was actually quite pleasant. It wasn't much but it at least improved his mood.

"So big guy, I washed up here, she's stranded, what's your story?" Millo asked simply while chewing a mouth full of crab. It really was surprisingly good for being cooked in a weird robot arm. He waited patiently till there was another lull in conversation and injected another talking point. "What is the deal with those arms, Pepper? Can't say I've seen anything quite like em before."

Millo idly pried into the nature of Pepper's cybernetics. They seemed useful enough though it was just small talk. Millo chewed at his cake in a few more bites finishing it out quietly and shifted to lay down in the sand. At least he got back at that damn crab. It seemed they were all stuck here. Millo's nose itched. Something had been bothering it since he woke up and it wasn't the fat guy's stench.

"I don't suppose anyone knows what that sickeningly sweet scent is that seems to be all around us."

Eldon bounced up and down on the balls of his feet while he talked, cheerfully rubbing his hands. These looked like nice people, even if they'd gone and cleaned up the whole beach while he wasn't looking. It wasn't like it was their fault, anyway, right? Honest job and all that! And it seemed like he'd arrived on the island just in time too, if they were cooking.

The girl especially did it really well with the strange stuff she'd got on her arm, he thought, picking up the crab-cake. "Oh, thank you for the food!" said Eldon happily. "I'd offer you something but it's really leftovers from last night's dinner so it's not super warm, unless you want to try heating it up?" He bit into the crab-cake. It was actually not too bad at all for something, well... he'd watched her gather the ingredients and cook it right in front of them with beach-stuff! Which made it not bad at all! He beamed. "This is good! You've had a lot of practice!"

The crab-cake vanished in just a couple of bites, though; it hadn't been a very big crab to begin with. Maybe if she'd put a bit of leaf in or something to spread it out, though Eldon wasn't a big fan of eating leaves. They were way too stringy and never quite tasted the way they looked. "Oh, I'm Eldon, Eldon Stammets, and I just got off the boat over there!" he said cheerfully. "And so you're not beach cleaners after all! I didn't notice! It's a nice island anyway, Gilligan's!" He grinned, then scratched his head in puzzlement. "Smell?"

Eldon sniffed the air, and shook his head. "There's nothing sweet in the air, but there's... probably something ripening in the trees over there, but I dunno what it's called?" He waved vaguely at a clump of trees farther up the shoreline. "I guess you could call that sweet but it's really more of a savoury sour thing, don't you think? Some kind of citrus!"

Pepper replied to Millo’s curiosity with the short version of the story she told everyone, “These old things? Lost my hands to some nasty burns and my dad dished out the money to get these fancy replacements.”

Of course, that was a heavily watered down version, but it worked well enough. Why did she need to delve deep into her past if there was no need? It was the truth anyway.

Turning to the eccentric one, she gave an awkward forced smile responded, “Ah, um… no thanks. My arms don’t work like that anyway. Glad you enjoyed the crab...” Then hearing Eldon introduce himself, Pepper reiterated, “My name’s Pepper if you didn’t catch it earlier.”

Eldon seemed a bit overwhelming to take in all at once, but Pepper tried to bear through it. Maybe he was an alright guy behind it all. Placing the oily leaf beside her on the log she was sitting on, she took the crabcake off from it with two enormous fingers and started to nibble on it. Not bad for something so makeshift, but could definitely be spiced up a bit more. Too bad they were stuck on an island for now.

Looking around, Pepper wondered as well, where the smell was coming from. Eldon seemed not to smell it, but Pepper herself had picked up on it the moment she stepped out onto the island.

“You sure you don’t smell that?” the woman inquired to Eldon. “Not sure if it’s the fruit, but I guess we can look.”

Finishing up her crabcake, Pepper got up from the fallen log and squinted towards whatever fruit Eldon was referring to. She started heading over to the tree, staying in the shade of the treeline. It was obviously humid with it being the kind of island it was. Her jacket was getting stuffy, but she still felt rather uncomfortable taking it off with just the two men around.

Finally at the fruit-bearing tree, Pepper put both hands on her hips and looked to the other two, asking, “What do you guys think?”

Millo hopped up. There was a bit of a disagreement here and Millo knew his nose. That was sickeningly sweet. Almost like overripe fruit. It's definitely something overripe and it's definitely obnoxiously sweet. It's, It's..Uh..." Millo wasn't normally the most eloquent speaker but he wasn't bad at it and he definitely didn't normally forget his culinary terminology. However his brain just wasn't processing things as fast as it normally would for some reason. Pepper began to wander along the beach and Millo followed after. It was an awkward sort of shuffle along the beach. The three of them trying to figure out what exactly they were looking for and in all probability looking for entirely different things.

It didn't take long before Pepper pointed out a fruit bearing tree and Millo shrugging walked up to it and hopped up to climb it. The climb took some effort, he was already tired and burnt from the exposure of drifting in recently and really wasn't in the condition to be climbing trees but regardless he struggled to the top and tossed a few of the fruits down. It wasn't one he was familiar with, or was it? It was certainly kind of sweet but not the sweetness he was smelling, it was more flowery and felt firm to the touch. It was round and a little patchy with small spots of discoloration. He took a bite and found it juicy, a welcome sensation. Millo devoured it sucking up all the moisture he could. "This is actually pretty great, but, it doesn't, mhm, smell quite right." Millo turned and idly started walking deeper into the jungle.

"Maybe it's deeper in, let's try moving up-wind and keep looking." The ferny overgrowth was relatively thick but the canopy let in plenty of light above. Every now and then there was a small bit of rope or other sign of previous explorers but for some reason none of these seemed to set off any alarm in Millo's head where normally they might. Instead he proceeded to search through the vegetation startling various small rodents and examining the general flora of the island.

Huh. Her arms didn't work like... what? If she could turn crab bits into crab cakes then surely she could heat up leftovers, right? Eldon tilted his head, looking speculatively at Pepper's arms. Maybe she meant she could only do small mushy things, like some kind of food processor-cum-oven dealio!

"Hello, Pepper, nice to meet you! And yup, really good crab, leaf really sets it off I'm sure!" He beamed. "'Course, what it could really do with is a bit of um, it's a special seaweed thing from Boin, could swear I had some on me," and he began patting himself down looking for it. "It's a fair bit too salty for most people by half on its own, see, but it's got a thingy in it that works with crab meat and makes them both absolutely great, just, huh," and he finished patting himself down with a disappointed look on his face. "Guess I used it all up on the boat," he mumbled, embarrassed. Then he brightened right up again: "I'll just have to show it to you all again the next time we pass by Boin, it's super cool, can't miss it! Bright red to scare people off but it's totally safe if you get to it the right way!"

They wandered up the shore towards the trees, though Eldon was mostly stomping his way up because the sand kept on shifting under his weight and if he didn't put his foot heavily down then he'd probably slip and fall! And that would be bad for the friends he was carrying! "Whoo-whee!" he whistled, wiping a great deal of sweat from his forehead onto the back of his hand and flinging it down onto the sand, where it immediately evaporated away. "It isn't half hot out today, isn't it? What a day for fruit-pickin's!"

The smell that Eldon had identified got stronger and stronger as they got nearer the trees, and Eldon beamed, convinced he was right after all. "Yup, that's the one," he said happily, though he was still sweating like an ice cube in an oven and the tree was really tall and all the fruits grew together at the top of it. He sniffed, though really he didn't need to when the smell here was as strong as it was! Millo went shimmying up the tree, which was something Eldon never really had gotten too good at doing without a few ropes and hooks and things, and tossed down a few of them. Eldon caught one.

"Oof, careful about the juice!" he said, laughing as he bit into one and juice sprayed all over his shirt. "Ripe things, these. Tasty though, thanks!" He chuckled as Millo rejoined them on the ground. "But if these ain't the thing you want, what is? Bit of description, bit of, you know," he waved his hand in a vague circle. "Thingy?"
