Rio only realized his mistake when his kick was blocked by the woman, and when he did he was too exhausted to properly react to her sudden pull. He felt suddenly helpless as Raine jerked him into the air and flung him away with truly monstrous strength, almost dislocating his ankle with the motion. The air rushed across past his ears, his cloak flapping violently after him as he flew across the plaza. Then he crashed right against a residential building's wall. The stone cracked from the impact, bits of the paint and cement falling to the ground after him, where he stood on his knees. And even as he did, the hindering ashes died down around him, retreating within his body again. Rio panted, blood and sweat mixing on the ground below him. His spear had embedded itself into the wall next to him. When he looked up, dizzy, he saw the bloodied shape of the woman coming towards him again. Rio grit his teeth. Did the woman ever tire? What business did someone like that have calling somebody else a demon? "Oh well..." Rio muttered. "Can't hit me if she can't see me..." Hopefully, at least. He'd been thrown just far enough to give him the time to react. Though his thoughts were muddled from the blows he'd taken, desperation forced him to go on. Though the ashes seemed to have settled down around him again, now they sprung to life - different than before. A pitch-black substance, like a cloud of soot, expanded from Rio's body, obscuring his shape and even the ground itself everywhere around him. When the shockwave from Raine's punch momentarily parted the ashes, Rio was no longer there. Only a crater and Rio's spear, embedded in stone, were visible. Rio tried to staunch his bleeding as he limped away from the place he'd crash-landed against. He didn't need his spear to finish this off, he told himself. Just a little more time. In a little more time, he'd have the strength to create more ashy spears to impale the demonic woman with for once and for all. Techs

Raine's attempt at throwing the man had in fact been a success, and she had followed up on the throw with a punch, however where it had traveled she soon noticed the devil fruit user was no gone. She growled in frustration, the world around her still morphed by that weird creature's abilities. Whilst she could make out shadows, it was as if that the sun had been switched off, only leaving nearby buildings to burn. And hell, they weren't even burning. But where the hell had that slippery bastard gone? She looked around, her eyes spotting his spear he'd left behind. Was he trying to run?! Rushing over to it and throwing her guitar over her back again, she noticed a trail of blood on the floor... "YOU CAN'T RUN FROM ME!" Unlike what might be expected of her, she didn't chase down the demon. Instead, she opted for the logic that whilst he could run and hide, if she struck enough ground then it was unlikely he could dodge. She knew the general direction he'd gone by a thin trail of blood, but he could literally be anywhere now. And that was why she'd fling a warning shot... Ripping his spear out of the wall, she tested it's strength. It was wrong, stronger than anything she could break... Perfect. Gripping it tightly, she looked out into the black nothingness the demon had created, and then threw the spear full pelt, sending it hopefully in the right direction. She wasn't done yet though... "YOU CAN'T HIDE!" She cried out through the darkness. If Rio had been stood anywhere near where the spear had been launched originally, then he would have to move fairly fast, as a loud crashing and groaning could be heard in the distance, before a small house would find its way flying towards him. Debris flying off in all directions, but a solid building still making its way with considerable speed. Raine had exhausted a lot of her energy from that though, and remained stood in the darkness, breathing heavily and hoping to hear a pained scream or something. Techs

Rio heard the woman screaming through the soot-laden air. He'd managed to regain control of his breathing, and he'd managed to quickly bandage his largest wound with a ripped-off piece of his shirt. It was enough that he dared to will the ashes to part slightly before him, as he tried to peer into the direction he'd heard the voice coming from. He saw her rip out his spear and throw it somewhere to his left - hey, that was delicate craftsmanship! - and then run over to the building itself. The ashes cleared around him for a moment as he looked for where his spear had clattered to, and when he saw it, formed ashy hands from the substance to retrieve it. Rio narrowed his eyes as he watched her fingers dig into the stone. Wait, the building... it was lifting? No, she'd-- oh, oh crap. Rio could hardly believe his eyes as the woman ripped the building off its base. What was she going to do with that? She threw it. Of course she did. Rio watched as the shadows deepened around him in the building's lumbering descent, and threw his head back in a defiant yell. He struck out towards the building with his spear. "Still not enough." The building exploded outwards at the force of his attack, splitting straight through its midsection. Rio slapped away the small pieces of falling debris that threatened to land on him as two halves of the building crashed to the ground on his either side, the force of his shockwave parting his own ashcloud momentarily. When the dust had settled, he glanced towards Raine and studied her, as if trying to decide something. The ashes died down around him, dropping onto the ground. The ground bled into black around him. "That strength of yours is impressive," he called out, turning towards Raine. Though Rio was still tired and bleeding, it was easier to hide that now. He had no idea if the drinks stall he'd longed for was still standing, but even the idea of such a lovely thing was surely worth fighting for. "But now I'm going to have to ask you to get out of my way." He took a wide stance and drew a deep, calming breath. Then he slammed his foot down on the ground, the stones cracking apart under the powerful step-in, and stabbed the air in front of him with all of his strength. Techs

The darkness began to clear, just in time for Raine to see the man cleave the building in two. Her eyes narrowed at him. So he really was a demon... Figuratively still, because she seriously didn't believe in any of that, but nonetheless a demon. After he'd poked two fairly large holes in her, she probably should have deemed him someone to take serious, but it was only now that she was finding herself requiring to. Hell, he even had the strength to goad her after a feat such as that... She growled in response, her natural response to anything that pissed her off, that and punching things. She was a little too far away to punch him this second though. It appeared he wasn't too far away though, as a sudden wave flew by her suddenly, ripping into her already bad arm and causing her to reel in pain, surprise and pure rage. This required another method of approach... Reaching towards her bag again, Raine found her hand being spiked by various shards of glass. All but one of her purchased bottles of alcohol had shattered, and she only realised this after a little bit of searching and a few small cuts across her fingers. She found it though, just the thing to help her think straight. Because, of course, alcohol was known for that. Ripping the cap off she took a big gulp, keeping a little in her cheeks to savour it, before simply holding the bottle by her side. She'd seen how it had worked against the man's powers before, so really, she only had one thing she needed to do... "BREAK YOUR NECK!" Not quite her first port of call, but she was certainly going to do that afterwards. Her screaming was slightly muffled though for some reason. Her energy was waning though, she'd need to bring this fight to any end, although she wasn't sure how... She growled, whatever she could come up with she'd have to make it work. Growling like a wild animal with anger, she began to run, straight for her opponent. Her bottle was in her non dominant hand, and although in a state of fury she was still able to concoct a sort of plan. Once Raine neared the devilman, she lashed out with a heavy punch. She was hoping to catch him off guard or at least to force him back a little, although if she hit even better. The punch held a lot of force to it, enough to knock the devil back if he were to be struck. That was a mere distraction though. As her right hand ended its swing, her body suddenly spun, revealing the bottle as she threw it full pelt towards him. Whilst not the most accurate, in close range she was more confident, especially with the speed that it traveled. She did love her alcohol, but she loved the idea of jamming her thumbs into his skull more. Her onslaught wasn't stopped there though, as she unleashed another powerful punch, hoping that the previous distractions were enough to stop him from reacting in time to the devastating force headed his way. Ash scrunched underfoot as Rio took a step back, settling himself into a more defensive stance. His earlier attack had blown back the woman's hair and shattered most of her bottles, but otherwise... it was as if he'd just sent a gust of wind her way. She was certainly tough, he could say that much. She hadn't fallen even after he'd started fighting seriously, in fact she'd only gotten more violent and more fierce as the battle progressed. Rio resolved to wait for the woman's move this time, unsure of how to proceed. Rio saw the punch coming for him, intercepting it with the midsection of his polearm. The force of the attack sent him skidding backwards but he managed to keep the momentum under control, though his arms felt a little numb afterwards, grinning nervously at the ferocity of the attack. He noticed the bottle coming for him - but a millisecond too late. He misjudged the trajectory of the bottle of alcohol and accidentally broke it with an attempted parry. Alcohol sprayed everywhere, even to Rio's face and clothes, though he tried to dodge the worst of it. Through the shattered glass and spraying alcohol he saw Raine winding up for a strong-looking punch. Rio forced himself into action despite the protest of his straining muscles, leaping towards her attack, driven by his own frustration and earlier failure to deliver a finishing blow. Just as Raine's fist lashed out, Rio's spear shot out to meet it. The force of the two attacks clashing shattered windows nearby, blowing back ashes and buffeting Rio's hair and clothes. He hoped the attack would be enough to pierce through hers and damage her more than it damaged him. Groaning at the combined backlash of having met Raine's attack and his own counter, he stumbled backwards, hacking and gasping for air, and then by some hidden reserve of strength, braced himself. He released a vicious circular slash almost at blindfold, twisting his entire body along with the attack. Techs

Her first attack missing only enraged her, but the satisfaction of the second making contact was too great, which only egged on her third attack, one which she found herself at a disadvantage when throwing. Her attack was caught by an opposing one of similar force, one which began to force back her fist and eventually found her being overwhelmed and forced back, the skin on her hand being stripped back which only led to her growling in pain and frustration. In response she stepped forwards to try and lash out, just enough for the tip of her opponents attack to catch her belly, opening both her shirt and her skin rather cleanly, albeit not deeply. "YOU WON'T ESCAPE!" She screamed practically in his face, pushing off against the floor with a large amount of force. The ground where she pushed off from crumbled from the force, as the furious redhead charged towards her opponent. Deep down she knew what she had to do, and no matter what was going to do it. Her injuries were severe, and whilst maybe not fatal they were enough to sap at her remaining strength, surprisingly even that last hit she took which was causing a weird amount of bleeding. Nevertheless, as she closed in, she unleashed an overwhelmingly powerful punch, one aiming to fling her opponent backwards, or ideally to simply finish him off. "THIS IS IT!" Whether her punch landed or not, she aimed to finish things here, and she was going to continue with her onslaught. Her other fist now flew forwards, releasing a punch which aimed to strike those at a distance. Her energy was ebbing here, her blood severely lacking, and despite her rage driving her on she was struggling. After all, her eyes were streaming from the ash and even as a smoker she was struggling to breathe. Chances were, these last few moves would be the end to it, whether she won or lost. Yet... She still refused to lose, despite everything. She refused to give up fighting until that demon was down... Tech

The ground trembled in anticipation as Rio watched the woman speed towards him. His own reactions felt too slow, too tired. The frustration and the pain melded into one in Rio's mind, resolving into something worse than either one of them as he faced down the assault with a grim expression. Raine's fist approached him at seemingly lightning speeds. Maybe he hadn't put his heart into it before. Rio grit his teeth, anger at his own weakness bubbling up to the surface. This time... There was a whoom as displaced air suddenly rushed to fill the place where Rio had stood a moment before, the ground cracking and stone splinters flying from the force of Raine's attack. He resolved into vision above and behind Raine, his entire body coiled like a spring. The ashes rose into the air around him, whirling furiously as if the intelligence behind them wasn't in much of a state for precise movements anymore. "TRY THIS ON FOR SIZE!" Rio shouted as he uncoiled into a spinning motion, speeding down towards Raine like a whirling guillotine. He knew he couldn't take any more beating from the absurdly strong woman, so he aimed to end it here. Only a critical blow would end it. And this was his best one. Techs

And just like that, once again the weird demon beast had disappeared. One moment he was in front of her about to take a beating, and the next her fist was striking the ground and cratering it. As soon as she struck the floor she could hear the hammering of feet against stone, and turned instinctively towards the source in time to see an overly powerful attack headed her way. She had no real time to react, though she still attempted to bat the weapon aside with her hand, only receiving a gash across her palm followed by a deep cut running down the entirety of her torso. She howled and pain and found herself staggering backwards, continuing this only briefly before falling to one knee, her fists against the ground to try and keep her up. "SON OF A..." Her cursing was interrupted by a sudden vigorous coughing of blood. Through hazy eyes she looked up at the man... She wanted to crush him, destroy every bone in his body... But she hadn't the energy. She was exhausted, injured... Past her last legs. Blood begun to pool around her, yet she still wouldn't properly go down. This wasn't pride, or honour or anything like that. This was stubbornness. That, and the one emotion she was most familiar with. One which allowed her to defy any attempts at stopping her rampage. Rage. This man had pissed her off too much to walk away with a few scrapes and bruises... Her body began to numb as her breathing quickened, her fists beginning to dig into the ground beneath her. "I'LL MAKE YOU SUFFER" She growled, her hands now gripping a solid piece of ground in front of her. With a sudden vicious howl she sprung up, flipping the rock forwards at the man with force. This was it. Rushing forwards she grabbed for the man or his weapon to stop his escape, but whether it succeeded or failed her initial attack would hopefully give her enough time for just this... Once again her fist struck forwards, with unparalleled force which aimed to send the man flying, with enough force to turn every bone in his body to dust she'd bet. Her body and mind were roaring at her now, almost static, but still she had enough strength for this... Whether her first attack struck or not, whether he was attempting to land another blow, or anywhere nearby, he'd feel her wrath. As her body began to fall she brought her fist down towards the ground, roaring as it slammed into the stone below and crumbled everything within the nearby area, a circular wave of force blasting outwards and not only harming the floor, but anyone or thing stood nearby. As the dust and rubble began to clear around where she had punched, the lone redhead could be seen laid unconscious on the floor. She'd used the last of her energy in vengeance, in hate and fury, and now as she laid there, she was satisfied. But... Also incredibly pissed off still. Tech

Rio had a small moment of satisfaction to himself as he felt his attack connect, and connect well. He flipped around in the air and landed one knee down, exhaling audibly. But then Raine started screaming again. She wasn't down? Rio could hardly believe his eyes, but the ground cracked and fell apart again as she began to move - though this time in obvious pain. She screamed something about suffering and burst towards him, throwing something. Rio grunted as suddenly something heavy collided with his stomach. A rock? He hadn't even noticed -- Oh. His vision had been wobbly for a while now, ever since he'd taken that last shockwave. The world lurched around him, as if flipping upside down as Raine bull-rushed towards him and connected with her next attack. His vision went black as the rest of the air escaped from his lungs and he was sent flying, though he was only faintly aware of his surroundings at this point. Rio breathed in through his nose, hearing the air whoosh past his ears. Then he crashed into something. The sound of wood splintering and an axle breaking crashed across the plaza, accompanied by the sound of broken glass, and then... then Rio finally felt what he'd been looking for. The plaza slowly resolved into sight around him. Rio became faintly aware of something dripping onto his face and streaming across his parched lips, down to the ground. A broken vase of spring water loomed above him, out of focus, the water within sloshing down onto him. He smiled. The only thing he'd wanted out of this had been a drink, after all. He opened his mouth just a tad - the most he could do - and drank it in. Something felt wrong with his body, numb as it was, but that'd pass with time. Probably. But more importantly, even time couldn't have fixed his disappointment if he hadn't been able to get a drink today. And so, even as marines and city guards alike began to stream into the ravaged plaza, even as the ground trembled again when another cheaply-built building collapsed to the ground, Rio could feel the touch of victory on his lips. He recognized that taste well. Its name was... Spoiler: click to toggle ~~FIN |
