Raine looked down at the piece of paper she held in her hands. A simple shopping list, one which she'd been tasked with collecting the components of. Three lots of writing could be seen on the paper, two fairly neat and flowing, and one thicker and with more force. Nakashima and Mae had of course been the former, and her being the latter. That stupid Swordsman had elected her as the collector of their supplies... Sending her shopping, what an arsehole. Why couldn't he do it himself? After all she was the one that knew about repairing the ship, and she was fully aware that theirs needed a lot of care. "Stupid fish armed gutless... Ugh..." She complained loudly. She'd found herself within the center of town, the floor cobbled and the houses surrounding the square she stood in made out of a mix of more stone, and wood. There were countless stalls which looked like they would have the stuff that she wanted, but out of stubbornness she was struggling to read Nakashima's writing. Well, guess she'd go and get her stuff first. Alcohol and cigarettes. Those were the only two things she'd written down... Well, that'd have to do then. Heading off towards a nearby stand filled with tinted bottles, she began eyeing up their wares. Most certainly alcohol, and most certainly good quality... "I'll take... Four of the Drum Whisky, one Cretakari Rum, and... Hell to it, three Drum Wine" Whilst she didn't drink much wine herself, she knew that Mae had picked up a taste for it. Upon hearing the total price she couldn't help but sigh, but she knew this stuff was expensive and handed over some beli. She might have been a pirate but she wasn't heartless, and she was willing to pay for goods. She quickly placed all her alcohol in her bag, and now was ready to move onto the next part of her shop. Note Rio yawned in the noon sun, a gentle breeze caressing his skin pleasantly. The marketplace was rather busy today, a circumstance he had taken advantage of earlier to escape the attention of a particularly nosy marine, but it was also cathartic to him in other ways. Commotion like this reminded him of the fairs he'd gone to with his tutor of old, of the only real childhood he'd had. Then again, it also reminded him of the hectic markets of Toroa, where a man could get trampled to death for the crime of standing under the wrong stall when a local nobleman decided to come for a visit. Pleasant thoughts, Rio, he told himself as he weaved in and out of the crowds. Now that he'd gotten into the mood, though, it was hard to shake off. He really just needed something to take his mind off the subject. "Refreshing drinks! Cold, refreshing drinks!" A merchant screeched from behind a huge stall littered with all kinds of incredibly refreshing-looking beverages. Oh, that was just perfect. Ashes began to flake from his skin in an ashen mirror image of the drool that he licked from his lips as he rushed towards the stall. He couldn't believe how thirsty he suddenly felt. "Excuse me, coming through, I'm sorry ma'am..." he muttered as he pushed past the crowds. People pulled back once they realized that he was leaving a trail of ashes behind him. Except one of them. "A-ah, excuse me, could you move aside?" Rio asked the woman, his lips parched. |

As Raine looked at one particular stall, she couldn't help notice that the temperature had increased to one side of her. A meek voice called out for her to move, which led to her to simply turn to look at him. She was... Surprised by what her eyes saw. Whilst the man she'd turned to see looked naturally fairly normal, his body appeared to be literally flaking and leaving what appeared to be ash wherever he went. In fact, every breath seemed to be releasing smoke, like some sort of chimney. Weirdo... Without saying much she simply just took a step to one side, allowing him to pass. However, as he went to pass suddenly she changed her mind, turning again and this time reaching out and trying to grab his shoulder. "Hey, what's up with that smoke and ash? Seems pretty weird to me. Swallow a cigarette or something?" She joked, though suddenly in need of a boost of nicotine. She staved off the need for a moment, instead looking serious at this weird man. Just what was with him? This man gave off a lot of heat, enough so that contact with his skin was uncomfortable and she released him quickly, although not before her hand was dirtied with soot or something. Seriously, what was with this creepy guy? |

Rio jerked to a halt as the woman grabbed his shoulder in a strong grip. He sighed, then turned to reply. But his throat was really, really dry. And so when he opened his mouth to say something polite, his voice caught up in his throat and he caught a coughing fit instead. Soot and glowing hot embers struck Raine full on in the face. Rio looked on at his accident with wide eyes, trying to still his coughing by placing a hand over his mouth. "S-shit, I'm real sorry-- cough! Just let go of me, al-- cough! - alright?" |

As the man turned to face the redhead, instead of simply explaining his situation, instead he swarmed her face with that smoke. Now, she was fairly used to smoke in her eyes, but this was something else. It was like someone was holder her above a blazing fire. She could feel her face reddening and tanning just from this brief exposure, and the pain... It felt like she'd been set on fire, and her eyes slowly drying out. She growled in pain, before being overcome with confusion and rage. Instinctively she lashed out with a punch, her fist speaking for her as she swung with considerable force towards the sootman. "THE HELL ARE YOU DOING... BASTARD!" She cried as she swung. She then quickly reached to her eyes to try and clear them, just about managing to gain some vision back but her tear ducts still causing them to water excessively. She could see blurs and that was just about it... But she could clearly see that glowing bastard... What the hell did he think he was doing?! Who the hell did he think he was?! She seethed in rage as she tried to finish clearing her eyes, her breathing pained too but nowhere near as bad as her retinas. |

"Hey, I'm really s--" Rio's vision blackened for a moment as something crashed against his skull. It was only a moment after that he realized it was Raine's fist. "Y-YOU'RE GOING TO PAY FOR THAT!" he yelled as he stumbled backwards, hand going into his coat for his concealed weapon. The beverage stall was right in front of him, and his throat felt like Desertia itself. He wouldn't be held back from his prize. Ash exploded forth from his body in every direction. Rio breathed out a thick cloud of soot and embers, and even as he did so, extended his Wapometal spear into its standard length - as long as Rio was himself - and took a battle stance. People everywhere around them began to retreat from the scene in terror, some faster than others as they looked into the eye of the storm. In the middle of the whirlwind of ash and embers stood Rio, and his weapons and body took on a fiery, glowing cast, as if they were made of the embers too. Somehow, he suddenly looked taller, and amidst the whirling ashes it almost looked like he'd sprouted horns. Maybe it was just the heat, or the month, but this was getting way out of hand. Rio lunged towards Raine, shouting, and aimed a blazing thrust at her center mass. Note

Finally, her eyes were beginning to clear a little bit. She could even breathe without too much issue, which was a huge relief. However, just as she took a huge gulp of fresh air, her eyes spotted what was in front of her, that being a... Well, she wasn't sure. The man she'd just smacked had suddenly grown large sooty horns, and was wielding some sort of dark black weapon. Her eyes struggled to adjust, but she couldn't help but feel like she was making a bad habit of picking on the wrong people. "Ah shit" She complained as suddenly the huge blackened weapon flew towards her. In her uncertainty she only just managed to move aside, her side being sliced open and suddenly the wound searing in pain. She cursed and staggered away, holding her side trying to ignore the sensation of burning which was crawling up her torso from her wound. Stupid... Stupid, stupid.... "STUPID ARSEHOLE, I'LL KILL YOU!" She screamed, darting towards the particularly dangerous looking man, pulling her arm back before punching forwards with force. This punch in particular was unlike your average punch, after all, your average punch didn't tend to break everything in the nearby vicinity. As the paved ground cracked, and the nearby stalls literally splintered, a certain rage could be seen in the redhead's eyes. Well... Rage was perhaps not quite enough to describe the sudden seething hatred overcoming her, as she then proceeded to punch the nearby floor. If the ground hadn't been cracked before, it certainly now was as the cobbled stone now was sent flying. Tech

Rio hadjust enough time to pull back and steel himself before the angry woman threatened to kill him and punched the air in front of her. "Why did you..." Then it hit him. Rio dodged back and to the side, desperately trying to avoid to the shockwave, but it hit him regardless, sending him stumbling backwards holding his stomach. Who coulda thunk this woman was capable of attacks that traveled through the air? The first bit of the attack that hit him caused his vision to swim dangerously, and as he jumped back expecting more attacks the ground suddenly trembled under him. Rio realized with shock that now the woman had crushed the ground, too! The shock was ultimately short-lived. He'd fought strong people before. Rio took a deep breath, steadying himself. Unlike the angry woman, he didn't yell or even really speak; he just blew away a cuff of hair and stepped towards her, willing his spear to expand to three meters in reach. Then, he attacked. Tech

"AGHH!" Raine cried out in a mixture of pain and anger as her body was suddenly pummeled with pain, her vision once again obscured by the excessive amounts of smoke that she was having to deal with. Gasping for air and her eyes completely out of use for now, confusion, fear and most importantly rage kicked in as she grabbed out for whatever she could manage. After a few wild swings suddenly her hands came in contact with the man's spear, allowing her to grip it, and tightly at that. It would be a challenge to wrench that back from her. "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU?!" She cried out blindly, suddenly wrenching the weapon forwards to hopefully drag its user with it, assuming he didn't manage to pry it from her grasp first, or simply release it. It was hard to tell if he had being currently blind and all, so once she'd tried to pull forwards, she then lashed out with another powerful punch, this one capable of sending most foes flying. As soon as she had, she would attempt to throw the weapon to one side, beginning to wipe her eyes in the hopes she'd be able to see soon. Techs

Everything had gone according to Rio's plan - except for one thing. He floundered as something suddenly jerked at his weapon hard. "Oof!" he coughed as he stumbled forwards. Then, mustering all of his strength, he attempted to right himself. There was one thing the woman hadn't taken into account. She was holding a weapon that could extend. "Compress!" Even more ashes flaked from his skin, now forming into a vicious, solid shape. The Wapometal spear snapped back to its original length even as an ashen one was forming next to him, bringing the woman with it... and right into striking distance. Rio gasped, spitting out blood as her fist connected with his chest region, sending him flying backwards. His grip almost loosened on the Wapometal spear but he kept it, if just barely, willing the weapon to compress again, this time into its small baton form. The ashen spear construct followed him, but mid-flight he came to his senses and sent the sharp ash construct flying towards Raine with a shout. He flipped over mid-air and landed on his feet, skidding a meter or two backwards from the force of the blow. "Damn, I got really careless there..." he said, coughing and wiping a bit of blood from his mouth. If enough time, he would take a defensive stance - this time, keeping his spear in its compressed form, waiting for an opportunity to extend it by surprise. Techs

In her blindness, Raine actually had no clue what was going on. All she knew was that the fool had kept hold of the spear, however as she tried to yank it away, instead she found herself flying forwards instead. She was sure that he didn't have that strength, but she was unaware of the shape changing power which the weapon had. Thankfully this also meant that her attack struck, although it also meant that she was unable to keep a proper grip on the weapon. She growled with anger, running her arm across her eyes and hopping backwards several feet to give herself a moment. Whilst she was successful in clearing her eyes again, she didn't have enough time to move out of the way of the incoming ashen spear. "Crap..." She cursed, looking down at the weapon that had literally wedged itself in her lower torso. She went to reach for it, only to notice her right hand was red and raw, having nearly completely missed the burning coming from the previous attack. She'd... Work with it. Grabbing hold of what had impaled her, she tugged hard on it, managing to free it from her along with a trickle of blood. Cursing, she threw the chunk of soot to the ground. Getting in close wasn't working, especially in a fight versus someone with sharp weapons like that. She needed a different approach, but in her anger it wasn't easy to think straight... "EAT THIS!!" She suddenly snarled, reaching to her backpack and drawing one of the bottles of alcohol she'd purchased moments ago. She tried not to clench too tightly, and instead simply launched it at the man, hoping that he wasn't immune to a bit of glass and alcohol or something. She wasn't done there though, as suddenly she lifted the next best thing, a stall which was situated next to her. It didn't require too much effort to lift the wooden structure, and seemed to require even less to send it hurtling towards the man at high speeds. "AND THIS!" He final thing to bombard the ash man with wasn't actually a projectile per say. Instead she balled up her fist and hopped forwards, and then launched a powerful punch at the floor. For a brief moment nothing happened, before the ground in front of her began to crumble, the cobble cracking and sundering, flinging rock aside and creating a straight line going through the floor towards the man. As it got near, suddenly a large piece of the ground uplifted to hopefully hit him too, essentially finishing her bombardment with even more property damage. Techs

While Raine was busy with the spear wedged in her torso, Rio had other ideas. He willed for his embers to whittle down, removing the fiery coating from his weapons. Clearly, that strategy had played its part. When the hot, soot-laden ashes had dissipated from his weapons - and even from around him - there was a moment of quiet. Then Rio took a deep breath. A massive amount of ashes exploded to every direction from his body, and he breathed thick soot and embers into the mix to create a truly boiling ash-storm, sticking to clothes and clogging windpipes if allowed to. Even as the ashes expanded from his body, however, Rio saw that Raine preparing to throw something at him. He simply sent a stream of the ashes, formed into a vague object, at the bottle and knocked it out of the air. The bottle of alcohol crashed to the ground away from both of them, the liquid spilling out on the ground. But if one looked closely at the liquid, they noticed that the liquid dissipated the ashes. Rio noticed this, and realized it was a threat - but that was when he noticed the massive stall that was about to be thrown his way. So she was focusing on ranged warfare now, was she? "That's not gonna work!" he shouted as he dodged to the side, easily anticipating and dodging the cumbersome stall. He was already anticipating the next thrown object, when suddenly the woman punched the ground again. This time, Rio knew what was about to come at him. And it was then that something in his brain snapped, urged him on, told him that this was an opportunity to seize the initiative. He knew this was a risk - he'd likely be exhausted by the end of this - but his instincts screamed for him to use the chance. It was now or never. "Soru!" Rio blitzed towards Raine, outspeeding both the cracks forming on the ground and the stones that descended where he had been standing a moment ago. He appeared in front of Raine, attempting to superman-thrust his spear right into her midsection while willing it to extend to its maximum range, hoping to cause the spear to both impale her and send her flying. Raine's eyes narrowed as the alcohol caused the ashes on the floor to slowly dissipate. Was that this man's weakness? Alcohol? Or was it liquids in general. She had a feeling this couldn't have been performed without the aid of a devil fruit, and those always seemed to be linked to the sea and water. If she wasn't seething with rage she might have laughed, but instead all she did was grunt. Her attacks seemed not to be working all too well on this man, as proven as suddenly the air around them blackened with ash, as if the very world itself was burning. She growled, however soon was cut off as the man appeared in front of her without warning, his weapon suddenly thrusting into her gut and piercing straight through her. She paused, blood spurting from her mouth before suddenly she was sent spiraling backwards. The rage machine's vision blurred as she tried to accustom to where she was. She now had two blazing holes in her torso and was leaking blood at an alarming rate. This whole fight had been terrible for her, but a mix of endurance and natural hatred towards everything had kept her moving on forwards. Slowly she gathered her wits and pulled herself up from what appeared to be a crater her injured body had made in the side of a house. Looking towards her opponent all she could see was a thick cloud of ash... Her own body was covered with the stuff and she was struggling to move because of it... But of course this just irritated her more. "You damned demon... I guess you'd like a taste of your own medicine..." She cursed, wiping blood from her mouth once again and readying her on weapon, a simple enough guitar, a present from Mae. Raine took a deep breath, before suddenly springing forwards. She couldn't meet the ridiculous speeds that she'd just seen, but she could meet and easily outmatch him in a challenge of strength. Thankfully his wall also hid her from view, whilst the glowing embers of himself were still evident from the outside. She had the advantage! Her rage overflowing and becoming evident in her suddenly reddened skin, she began her assault. Springing from the unknown, the redhead charged towards the spear user, swinging from low to high at him with full force. Techs |

Rio drew a ragged, shuddering breath as the impact of his blow ran back up his arm and through his body. That woman was tough. But it had to be over. He'd felt the spear diggind deep. The damage to her internal organs alone... Something crashed in the background. That must've been the woman, crashing into whatever had been in the path of her flight. Why had they started to fight anyway? There was something... something about a cold drink... He coughed, collapsing onto his knees. The ashes around him whirled violently, as if the intelligence controlling them had suddenly wavered. His vision swam dangerously. That had been way too much all at once. Soru was a superhuman technique that placed an incredible amount of stress on one's body - he shouldn't have used it so recklessly, with so little practise. Maintaining the storm of ashes during that maneuver had been a hellish experience. There was a noise coming from the background, like something sliding from the rubble. Rio looked up, leaning hard on his spear. He'd placed it tip-down against the ground at some point, instinctively supporting his weight. He gathered his strength and pulled himself up, taking deep breaths in an attempt to level his breathing. That was when a silhouette resolved itself into his vision. A silhouette in the shape of a woman he was certain he'd killed. "Y-you've got to be kidding me! You're a monster!" Raine burst through the ashes and sprinted towards him. Rio swallowed, trying to skip backwards and create distance like he'd normally do, but his footwork felt sluggish. When the woman caught up with him, he did the only thing he felt he could. An old technique, something he'd created when he was younger, less experienced. When every battle had been an uphill one. He uncoiled from his slightly awkward stance, lashing out with his weapon. He crashed the silvery spear against the club-like guitar's side, slapping it away from himself and avoiding its upwards momentum. He snarled, carrying the momentum into a desperate roundhouse kick, just trying to create distance between them again. His mind spun at the sudden motion, completely unprepared for that kind of exertion, and he would stumble backwards after the kick, drawing a deep, raking breath. Techs

Raine roared in anger as her attack not only missed, but had been pushed aside with the help of some skilled movements. It wasn't strength but technique that her foe had used to shift aside her attack, and in that regard he was lucky. Without that spear he'd be useless... She was tempted to wrench it away from him, however she noticed him swinging around to try and catch her. She only just managed to notice however, bringing in arm up in time to catch most of the blow. Her footing was still thrown off though... But so would the devil man's as she reached out and grabbed a hold of his outstretched foot. Her grip tightened as she made sure he'd have a tough time to escape. "THIS IS WHAT YOU GET STUPID DEMON!" She cried out, before pulling as hard as she could, attempting to literally fling the devil fruit user with an overhead throw. Most noticeably about this technique was that she released high in the peak of her throw, which might decrease the distance her target flew but instead meant he'd feel it more when he landed. And when he did land... Whether her throw succeeded or not, she charged forwards with all the rage in the world fueling her attacks. She was heavily injured and couldn't keep going like this, and yet she knew she had to, she would make this man regret his actions! "GO BACK TO HELL!" She screamed, despite not actually believing in such a place. Raine unleashed a powerful punch akin to the first she'd thrown at the demon man, one which whether it struck him or not, would damage the very structure of the nearby area. That sort of attack tended to prove difficult to defend against, but it also proved taxing on her body, as well as inefficient in comparison to a simple pummeling. Or as it seemed, stabbing someone with a flamey spear until they started to get faint, as had happened to the redhead. Techs
