"Why couldn't you choose someone else for this, I was in the middle of an investigation of great importance and now you've lugged me literally over a mountain... Whhhyyyyy. What am I even doing here?"

The young marine complained, a grumpy expression painted on her reddened face. It would have been a little easier to take her seriously if her curly pink hair didn't keep falling in front of her face, forcing her to take a break from her excessive hand gestures to sweep it to one side, only for it to repeat the process moments later. She stood inside a small office like room on board a marine vessel heading towards Cactus Island, having departed from Ketsuraku days previously. She'd been in the middle of an investigation when her time there had been cut short for apparently "pressing matters". She didn't even want to be in the Grand Line... Strong people resided there and she was in no way strong, not physically anyway.

"You're here because you're a trained and capable marine. Whether you believe it or not, you proved yourself as such on Mirrorball, and so will receive tasks of your level. Rest assured the case on Ketsuraku will be resolved, however we have wind of some troubling issues on Cactus Island which we want you to investigate"

The older more decorated marine replied, making sure to bring attention to his final word. As it so happened, Scarlett's mood and demeanor shifted incredibly quickly with the mention of investigating. Finally, her skills were finally being recognised. Heck, she hadn't even needed to beg for this one, they'd just straight up upgraded her experience. She didn't like leaving cases unsolved, but the two of them could figure things out she was sure. Heck, Cress deserved some recognition for her smarts, although she hadn't gotten a chance to try her apparently high quality sushi.

"Well why didn't you tell me earlier! We could have avoided this whole issue and gotten straight down to business. I need details, as many as you have"

She spoke, suddenly a whole lot more giddy. She got to do some investigating on an island unknown to her, in a place far away... From home... On her own... She paled a little thinking about that. Maybe she should just... Focus on the fact she could totally use that new magnifying glass she found. She'd hardly had a chance to test it out, but they'd always seemed so useful in the books. As her superior went to speak, he couldn't help but notice the sudden appearance of a tweed deer stalker hat on the younger marines head. He pushed that thought aside for a moment:

"There have been disappearances all over the island, people visiting only to seemingly vanish. We... Suspect that the priests of the island are involved, if only because they're the only people that really live there. We'd like you to go and investigate, and if possible bring in any suspects. We would prefer them alive, but then we'd also prefer the general public to stop disappearing, so just use your common sense"

He nodded towards Scarlett, who nodded back, before quickly raising her hand to her head as a salute. Time after time she forgot about that, and rather hated it if she was honest. Didn't need some weird hand gesture to signify respect, not that she held him in any different regard than the people of lower rank than her. They were all the same really, just some she was actually friends with. Unfortunately she'd not been able to make many friends on the trip here, but perhaps she'd find another pleasant local. With a second nod to her superior, she wandered out of the office and into the wider coridoor. Once the door had shut, she punched the air and quietly celebrated to herself. She was going to solve a mystery!

Chrysoara sailed on the ship. Alone. He had been dropped off on Salt Island of all places. From there, he had to secure a ship to take him to Cactus Island. It was not an easy task. His previous trip on Salt Island has left his face known on the island and no one was willing to let him book passage on their ships. It didn’t help he had heard rumblings of some new event occurring on the island which was revitalizing interest in the fight between Baga, Ceu, and Chrys. He wasn’t sure exactly what the rumors were talking about, but Chrys reported it to higher as soon as he heard and was safe. He had sent it to Lieutenant Boge, the man who had delivered Chrys’ orders to go to Cactus Island. He would have delivered it to this Commander Scarlett that he was told to report to but he had no way of contacting her.

Eventually, Chrysoara managed to find someone willing to work with Chrys despite knowing he was a marine. The problem was they weren’t willing to book passage on their ship. No, they had a ship they wanted to sell. The Medusazoa. A ship that was designed to imitate a Jellyfish. It fit Chrysoara so much that he laughed. While the money given to him to requisition a ship was not enough to buy one, he had some of his own savings and had dug into it to pay for the remainder. With that, he set off. The ship wasn’t the largest in the world – that helped when Chrysoara realized he had no crew to help him man the ship.

Thus, he was alone while he rode towards Cactus Island. He could see the famous Cactus Mountains ahead. Chrysoara didn’t know much about the island he was heading to but he knew that the mountain’s spikes were really tombstones from long ago. Green rivers flowed down from the peaks of the mountains and Chrysoara couldn’t help but admire the beauty of the island. It was beautiful – but it apparently held secrets. This was the first mission of this type for Chrysoara. An investigation into the disappearances of people on the island.

It was for this reason that Chrysoara found himself strangely excited as he pulled the ship into dock. He groaned and sweated as he performed all the tasks that would normally require an entire crew to do. Finally, he dropped the anchor, so the ship wasn’t going to go anywhere. The gangway fell, allowing access to the dock and Chrysoara began to walk down it. He didn’t lose his smile the entire time he had been working. An investigation! Where should he start?

Oh? Yeah, he probably should start by finding his superior. Was there a marine base on this island or would he have to walk around looking for her?

"Books, clothing, more clothing... More clothing. Mo- Why do I have so many clothes?!"

Scarlett complained as she dug through her stuff in search of essentially, more stuff. What she was actually in search of was a bag of what at the time she had deemed to be useless and slightly off putting crap, however now she was in the Grandline she knew that it was completely possible that she would need every piece of help she could get. Whilst incredibly excited for the whole investigation, she was very aware of the fact that the first person she saw would most likely be able to beat her up in seconds, or at least if her knowledge of this sea was correct. It was good idea to come prepared this meant. Eventually she heard a familiar rustle of plastic bag and fished it out, opening to see what was inside before nearly puking.

"Stupid pranksters... That's my job"

In the bottom she could clearly see something redder than her name, and she had a bad feeling about it. From her knowledge these were items which had been found at the scene of a crime, and for some reason or another people had found her to be a good successor to them. Among the what she could only assume were blood shards, she also found some sort of keg with a fuse, and a piece of rock which... It unsettled her. Tightening the bag and then chucking it in a basic brown backpack, she threw that on her back and headed for the deck.

The first thing that hit her was just how bitter the air was. Even the rainy days of Ketsuraku had her feeling warmer than this. She'd heard that the weather in the Grandline was a mess, and it was certainly a concept which had intrigued her. She'd read up on it some time, though not right now because the port was coming in fast and she was eager to go searching. She hadn't yet been informed of any people helping her, which meant she'd need to brave the social interactions which could lead to her getting one punched like she'd theorised. As long as she kept her eye out she was confident it'd be fine though.

The first thing that she noticed were the large hills which made up a good chunk of the island. They were fairly pretty she had to admit, though something seriously seemed off about them, and she couldn't tell what. She'd not seen the island on the approach having mostly stayed in her room, but now she was here she regretted not taking it in more beforehand. Planning was key in these situations after all. She sighed, too late now.

"Cactus Island. Well, here I come I guess"

With that she wandered on over to the edge of the ship where numerous marines were getting the boardwalk thingy ready. Whatever it was called, she began to wander along it the moment she was able to, and it was actually a fairly easy walk onto the wood of the deck. So, this was where she would solve her first mystery? She grinned, her hair being whipped back by the winds as she crossed her arms across her chest. She wore a simple, tight grey t-shirt with a pair of black jeans, and large black walking boots. She also wore her marine coat, which although a little showy, proved warm and cosy. Finally her marine cap was in fact missing, instead replaced with her deer stalker hat which she'd grown to love. Across her back was strapped an overly large rifle, and at her side hung a pistol and saber, standard marine issue. Now wasn't the time to stand around looking cool though, now was the time to solve a mystery. And with that, she stepped straight onto a loose board on the peer, causing her to launch herself forwards and practically faceplant. Good start.

Chrys was wearing a variant on a standard issue uniform. He was currently wearing a white Gi with a blue sash. It indicated his rank, as he was not yet a black belt in Fishman Karate. It also symbolized the marines as it was their colors. On the back of the Gi, Chrysoara wore the Justice Kanji. All officers were allowed to wear it and, technically, Chrysoara was a commissioned officer. It had happened some time after his time on Salt Island. He had made it to the rank of Ensign, the lowest of the commissioned officers. His arms moved perfectly fine now. The trip had taken far longer than going from Salt Island to Rust Pit had, and so he had more time to rest. His hands had gauntlets on them, one steel with blades along the finger tips and the other was iron. Simple gauntlets, but they protected his hands when he punched. They also made his punches quite a bit more powerful. He wore traditional Zori shoes. He had traded for them over the Geta due to the imbalance the raised platforms seemed to bring about.

As Chrysoara walked, he noticed something quite unexpected. The docks had marines on it. There weren’t too many, but they appeared to have just set up the gangway for their ship. Well, that makes things easy. Chrysoara sauntered over to the ship, not bothering to take his time on the dock. Many were afraid of falling, but Chrysoara was not. He was a Jellyfish Fishman. The water was his home. The worst part about falling would be wet clothes. Along the way, Chrysoara walked past a girl in a grey shirt and black pants with a marine coat on. He barely noticed her before turning around.

“Excuse me, Ma’am. Do you need help?” He said, holding his hand out to her.

"That was unsightly"

The pink haired girl grumbled as she sat up. She'd just about managed to avoid smacking her face on the floor by throwing her arms out, but now her hands were all damp and gross. Despite this someone that she'd paid no heed to initially was now offering her a hand. Instinctively she reached out, allowing the man to help her up assuming that he did so and didn't launch her off the peer or something. After all, she was making assumptions here. As she got to her feet she took a moment to look him over, quickly double taking. After all, she'd spent most her time in the blues and fishmen were a rarity there, even within marine ranks. She'd heard rumors of their strength and ferocity in battle, and this man's frame certainly matched her general expectations.

"Ah, thankyou. I was a little distracted for a moment and completely missed the gap in the floor, you know how these things are... Maybe?"

She awkwardly brushed some hair out from in front of her eyes, a little unsure how to proceed with this encounter. On one hand she could simply slip past him and get to investigating, but something about him made her reconsider. He wore fairly standard marine uniform, which meant he took his job more serious than some, but also the fact he seemed to walk with intention towards the marine ship. She wondered...

"Say, what is it that you're here for exactly?"

Correcting her hat to keep her hands busy, she wondered if her inkling had been correct. She was treating this like a warm up for herself, to see if she really was in the right mindset and to see if her months of reading books had paid off. She wondered if this guy liked reading... Hm, possibly not. You couldn't turn pages with gauntlets that size. Speaking of, she was glad that he'd helped her up with his other hand, she didn't feel like getting impaled through her own incompetence. Or, did that count as his? It didn't matter. Noticing some dirt on her knees she quickly brushed it off, whilst suddenly asking:

"You weren't... On the ship beforehand were you?"

She was sure she'd have seen him, and it was unlikely he'd made it to shore, run off down the peer and then headed back, but considering their fabled capability in water it was plausible he'd hopped off the ship earlier to take a look around and make sure everything was in order. Surely she'd have been informed of someone doing that though? Hmm, maybe she was just being overly twitchy about things because she'd never met a Fishman before. She saw no reason to treat him differently of course, and if her inkling about his reason for being here was correct... Well, one thing at a time.

“Only a little bit unsightly.” Chrysoara said, though he thought it was too low for the woman to hear. He didn’t want to insult her. Though, Chrysoara had to admit that she seemed quite nervous. She didn’t wear traditional marine clothes and she had the marine coat on. Chrysoara thought he glimpsed the Justice Kanji on the back, but he couldn’t be sure. That meant this woman was an officer of some rank, though he had no idea if he should be saluting her or not. That made the encounter rather awkward for Chrys. How should he act? The marines really need to take a cue from other military systems and wear ranks on the front of their person. It made things so much easier and Chrysoara longed for that simplicity.

“I was not on the ship. I’ve come here because I have been assigned to one Commander Scarlett. I do not know who she is, but I figure the first place I should search is on this marine ship. After-all, someone there must know my commander.” Chrysoara stopped to consider things as the waves lapped gently at the sides of the docks. Chrysoara could see the spot that the woman had tripped on. It really was a tripping hazard. It may have tripped Chrysoara had the pink haired woman not been laying in front of the tripping hazard. He would have to thank her for that one day – perhaps when the subject of her tripping wasn’t quite so fresh. This woman must know his Commander. That rank was not given out lightly and most would know someone on a Marine ship of that rank, especially if they were an officer.

Though, Chrysoara did hesitate to ask the question. This woman was looking at him strangely. It was almost as if she had never seen a Fishman before, which was not uncommon. The marines really didn’t seem to employ very many of his kind. Perhaps she was simply a little put-off. Either way, he thought about asking someone else on the ship about his commander. However, that could be seen as a waste of time and Chrysoara didn’t feel like aggravating a Commander that he was about to ask for a favor. So, he decided to ask this marine.

“Do you know of this Commander Scarlett? “

"That makes sense, I suppose that's smarter than wandering the island in search of a marine and hoping to get lucky"

She replied, only half paying attention due to being a little disappointed that she'd been incorrect about her assumption. After all, she'd assumed that he was in fact someone that was meant to be helping her on her mission around here, but if he was looking for a Commander then she supposed they'd most likely be on the ship. She hadn't realised that there were that... Many... Wait... She was a Commander! And her name was Scarlett!

"Oh yeah, I'm Commander Scarlett, heyyy"

She replied a little awkwardly, looking up at the man to meet his eye whilst talking. She should at least be a little formal if this man was looking for her. Suddenly a wave of glee hit her as she realised her assumption hadn't been incorrect at all. She wasn't working alone this meant, but she essentially had herself a fairly strong looking bodyguard. She wondered if he was much into reading... That was a question for later, for now, mission details and stuff.

"I can't say I've been told all that much about this mission here, including how many of us will be on the mission, but it's nice to meet you"

She smiled, sticking her hand out to shake his. She had a feeling he was of a lower rank to her, but that didn't particularly phase her. If his size was anything to go by, he probably deserved her rank more than she did. Her mind swam with the plan she had been making since she'd been given her mission, and was beginning to add this man into the equation. The range of people she could now talk to without getting beaten up had broadened significantly, and her mild fear of a scuffle had been silenced at least for now.

Chrysoara stood there stunned. He wasn’t surprised that this woman was a commander. Well, it would be a lie to say that he had expected the very first marine he spoke to on this island to be his commander; however, he also didn’t expect to find his commander lying facedown on the docks. Chrysoara stuck his hand out awkwardly. He made sure he didn’t use the hand with the spikes on the fingernails. He needed to get rid of that gauntlet anyway. The awkwardness came from two separate sources. First, this was his commander. A handshake felt…improper almost. He was an ensign. The rank difference was far too vast to be shaking hands. Second, there was the matter of the size difference. His hand was far bigger than her own.

“I’m afraid I know very little of the mission, either, Ma’am.” Chrysoara said formally before realizing he had yet to salute her. He hurriedly snapped a sharp salute to his forehead and waited for her to salute back.

“I am Ensign Chrysoara Fusce, reporting to duty Ma’am. My last mission was on Salt Island where I ended a slave ring with the help of Ensign Ceu Violante. From there, we travelled to Rust Pit island in order to get supplies on our way to Nemea. We encountered local pirates but dispatched them quickly. I came as quickly as I could once the orders were delivered to me, Ma’am. So far, all I have been told of the mission is that involves disappearances on this island.” Chrysoara gave his spiel, hoping that knowledge of his missions and recent work would help her formulate his plan. Then, he continued after realizing that he had left out a brief mention of any skills that he may possess that could be beneficial to the mission. “I am a blue belt in Fishman Karate and have been trained in the ways of a merchant. I find I can read people quite well and these skills proved useful on Salt Island when I masqueraded as a slave in order to infiltrate the slave ring.”

Chrysoara didn’t mention that he wanted transferred to Nemea as soon as the assignment was over. That could come later.

Scarlett nodded politely as she shook his hand, still distracted by the thought of getting to do some investigating and having her own bodyguard. His salute only led to her pouting a little bit. She didn't deserve that much respect, and even if she did it was nicer just to be polite and treat her like a friend or something, instead of making arm gestures. Sure she did it for her superiors, but that was because they got grumpy if she didn't. Thinking about it, the main issue here was simply that everyone had incorrect priorities, though she did try and ignore the many flaws which the marines had. Still, could be worse, could be the kidnappers she was totally gonna foil today. Or... Assumed kidnappers at least.

"Ensign Chrysoara Fusce. Hm, nice to meet you. No need to the saluting or anything, I don't mind. Or... Uh, at ease? Yeah."

She proceeded to listen intently to his exploits, feeling more and more like their roles should have been opposites. After all, she was a simple marine with a rifle who had incapacitated a few people that she'd needed to. Meanwhile this guy was literally out there freeing slaves! Why wasn't she out there freeing slaves and foiling mastermind plans like that? It did sound dangerous though... Like today... No matter, she had her new bodyguard Chrysoara. That name was going to need to be shortened though, but maybe she'd get to that later.

"I've never heard of those places, but good work nonetheless. It's important we have brave people like you doing work like that out there. And you say you're only an Ensign? Mhmm... Silly ranking system to be honest."

His last comment about being a blue belt only confirmed her suspicions that she'd in fact been given a bodyguard. As much as she disliked being seen as weak, and needing someone like... Chrysoara, she knew it was true and appreciated being looked out for. She couldn't remember how good blue belt was but she was going to assume it was only a few below black. If he was trained to in being a merchant she supposed that meant that he was a fairly charismatic fellow, that or highly threatening. Either characteristic could prove useful when asking the locals about the disappearances.

"Thankyou for the rundown, I will keep your talents in mind and hopefully this will allow us to work well together when figuring out this case. Oh and uh, I'm Commander Scarlett as we clarified and I... Shoot things with this gun on my back. And I have apparently done it enough times that I'm now a commander. I suppose I also helped defend Mirrorball from a pirate raid that one time... That's how I got this"

She tugged at the neck of her t-shirt slightly to reveal the top of a nasty scar on her chest, before realising how inappropriate it was to encourage a fellow marine to look down her top. Allowing the elasticated neck to ping back into place she quickly changed the topic. She wasn't even that proud of that scar, why was she off showing people... She shook her head, before continuing.

"Where was I... Uhh, oh yeah, I like investigating things and I imagine I have a fairly keen eye. And no, I'm not about to say I like long walks by the beach... Though I've not been to enough beaches to say whether I do or don't. Hm, shall we head into town? Perhaps you can tell me... About your hobbies whilst we walk!"

She was still a little uncertain how to act like this. She normally only had to have brief conversations when it came to people that saluted her, due to her tending to work alone, but also her promotion only being fairly recent. Tightening the strap on her rifle slightly she began to walk towards town, encouraging... Chrysoara to follow her. The more she thought on his name, the more she felt like his middle name should be Rex. Chrysoara Rex. Hmm... She decided if he was ok with the name Chrys then she'd use it, because she was struggling to say it properly, let alone figure out how to spell it.

"Also, it is ok if I call you Chrys? In-formalities all round here with me as you can tell... Kinda"

Chrysoara stood with his hand raised when the commander said At Ease. That…that wasn’t exactly correct. One needed to be saluted back before they could transition into At Ease. Of course, she was speaking informally overall. That changed things. If a superior officer told Chrysoara to go to At Ease then that would be a different command than just telling him to relax. He got the impression that she wanted him to relax. Strange that she wasn’t as interested in the drill and ceremony of being a marine as Chrys was. Still, the informality that she wanted and the uncomfortableness with which she spoke made Chrys curious about his new commander. Who was she and why wasn’t she as comfortable with the basic respectful actions that a marine would show to a superior officer? Maybe she was newer to being an officer? Still, commander wasn’t exactly a rank one reached easily. She must be extremely powerful and have impressed some high ups to be promoted quickly despite not caring about the finer points of military decorum.

Chrysoara hesitantly lowered his salute as Commander Scarlett began to say that she had never heard of the islands he had been on. Another interesting point. She was unfamiliar with the beginning islands of the Grand Line, then? It was true that neither had a significant marine presence, so perhaps that was why her knowledge of the islands was lacking. Despite just meeting her, he did beam a little at the comment about how it’s silly that he was only an Ensign. It wasn’t long ago that he hadn’t even been a commissioned officer. Now Commanders were telling him it was silly his rank was as low as it was. Chrys couldn’t help but think that racism within the marine ranks had some part to play in that. Hopefully this next mission would allow him to prove himself with a fair and unbiased superior officer in charge of him. As she talked, Chrysoara made mental note that she was a long-range fighter. Perhaps that was why they were paired together. Chrysoara was the definition of a close-range fighter. Then, his new Commander attempted to flash him.

Chrysoara looked at the scar and got a good view of other things in her shirt. Well, itwasn’t a [i[good[/i] of her chest but he did see. He blushed furiously. He had not even thought about Commander Scarlett as a woman before that, but it was true she was a woman….Enough of that! She was his Commanding Officer and perverted thoughts would not be allowed – even if she attempted to flash him. She probably hadn’t even considered that he was of the opposite sex due to his nature as a fishman. Many humans didn’t consider him that way – so it wouldn’t surprise Chrysoara. It didn’t upset him. He was here to do a job and nothing more. At the end of her spiel, Chrys considered her question. He didn’t mind being called Chrys. In fact, that was what he most often went by. He was just adjusting to the informality of the way she operated, still.

“Chrys will work fine, Ma’am.” Chrysoara said as they began to walk. “As for interests, I have a strong interest in people. I like to know why they do the things they do. What makes them tick? That sort of thing. I find observations tend to be the best teacher for this type of hobby.”

Honestly, considering that this Chrys was blue, she didn't think he could turn red, and yet his face turned a similar shade to her hair. She supposed she hadn't particularly thought about what she was doing, but... She'd been caught up in the moment and had gotten a bit excited to talk about her adventures. Sure, fighting wasn't at the top of her agenda, but she was still proud of herself for managing to fend off as many pirates as she did that day... The scarring from it was deeper than simply torn flesh though. Her innate cowardice was still present after all.

"People hey? That's perfect, that's just the sort of thing we need around here. I don't suppose by any chance you're much into mysteries. You know, classic mystery literature and stuff. I admit, that's where I've learnt most my analytical skills from"

She was eager to fangirl over some of her favourites, but she knew it best not to, in fear of scaring off her new bodyguard. Reaching into the pouch by her side she drew a single rifle bullet, beginning to twirl it around her fingers as they walked along. She was a little conscious of the size difference between them, her being a fairly average height and small frame, and him being rather large at least by human standards with large muscles and the rest. Fishmen tended to be larger from her knowledge though, so she supposed it wasn't all that surprising.

"You said observations are the best teacher. What do you observe when you see me then?"

She questioned casually, her pace picking up a little bit so that she could briefly turn to look at him and grin, before turning back to continue walking in line with him. They were approaching the town now but she was still curious about what the man thought of her, partly because she was being a whole lot less formal than most marines, and she knew it. The town in question was fairly pretty if not a little drab, with a large cathedral looking building to one side, and then countless white buildings littered at the base of one of the large mountains. Scarlett took note of a green waterfall... Most intriguing, and something she would keep in mind. Whilst she waited for a response, she did wonder where these people were disappearing to, as well as who was behind it. Even from here the only people she could see wandering about wore very samey black and white robes, most likely the priests of the island.

“I’ve read a few mystery books over the years as I travelled. My family dealt with a lot of different kinds of merchandise – books were among them.” Chrysoara said. His voice had a slight tremor in it as he struggled not to say the word ma’am. It was clear she didn’t want to be as formal as other marines and he should respect her wishes.

“You seem to be a kind person who is motivated by a desire to learn and solve problems. I don’t know if that is what drove you to join the marines, but it seems to be what you like the most. You seem almost brazen in your desire to not fall into the formalities of the marine world and I am afraid that it will infect me." Chrysoara stopped his observation comments at that as they walked. The grin she flashed his way caused him to blush again. He thought his commander was slightly flirty. True, he did find her looks to be slightly…. intoxicating, but she was his commander. He wasn’t about to tell her that he thought she was flirty. He was pushing the limits by mentioning her informality. He had worked so long to perfect his military decorum that Chrysoara was scared to lose it. He was a fishman and the world was not so kind to them. “Have you ever met another fishman?”

Chrysoara asked the question so as to impress the reasoning behind his extreme loyalty to decorum. Any error in how he acted could be an excuse for punishment when one was the only fishman around. Thus, he had to be perfect.

As they entered the town, Chrysoara began to absorb everything around him. Priests sauntered around as if they had nothing better to do – and they likely didn’t. There were very few non-priests on the island. There were a few who travelled in between the packs of priests. Chrysoara noticed that some of the priests seemed to be carrying papers and other documents for other priests. Priests in training, perhaps? Could they use that?

“Commander, how does one become a priest?” Chrysoara asked his boss, who he was beginning to think may be slightly younger than he was. She was at least of a similar age.

Scarlett's already excitable mood seemed to increase tenfold upon hearing that her fellow marine had in fact read some mysteries. She'd keep that in mind, and then maybe later she'd start to question him all about them, and ask for a few recommendations of the ones she hadn't read. Also of interest was his assessment of her which wasn't too far from the truth. Whilst her motivation to join the marines had actually been just to keep things the same, she supposed reassessing that he'd thought into it more than her... Joining had allowed her to live out fantasies she'd have never thought possible if she'd have stayed at home, she got to be a real detective!

"You're certainly observant. Learning is cool, but problem solving and being a real detective is what is most exciting to me. Just, without all those fights and stuff which have a tendency to break out... Yeah, none of those. I don't really see the need for formalities though, it just undermines people that shouldn't be y'know? But uh... I can't say I've ever met a Fishman before, so hi and all! I only just transferred from the Blues, so... Everything is fairly new to me"

It wasn't all that common to see a Commander within the Blues, but she'd been with the marines for a few years now, or at least... She was fairly sure she had been. She hadn't really tried to keep track, but it didn't matter now. The duo approached the town and soon found themselves stood on the outskirts, with numerous priests and only the very rare individual that wasn't. In fact, the two of them stood out like... Well, like a fishman and a pink haired girl in the middle of a town full of priests. The sudden question from Chrys had her wondering for a while, before she simply replied:

"Not a clue. But, that is a brilliant first line of inquiry. If it's that easy, then anyone could be joining, and then they could be using priesthood as a mere facade! Wait... That's what you were thinking right, and not..."

She paled slightly as she imagined having to both dress up like that, and follow their rules. He'd mentioned having gone undercover before, was he insinuating they try that here? Surely it'd be better to survey the land beforehand? Well, Chrys had done this before, perhaps it would work in their favour. Or perhaps one would go undercover and the other would be fed information and work on the outside. Either was plausible.

“If you’ve never met a Fishman, then you wouldn’t understand why I cling to the formalities.” Chrysoara said, beginning to regret his words immediately. This was his superior. An attractive and flirty superior, but a superior nonetheless. “With all due respect, Ma’am, not everyone treats Fishmen kindly in the marines. It is difficult for us to go further in their ranks when our superiors hate us. I am still convinced that I was sent to Salt Island to die. My superior wanted to be rid of me. I do not say this to disparage you, nor do I say it in an effort to stick to formalities with you. No, I say this only to explain why I am the way I am. I can drop the formalities while it is just us two…. But, when other’s are around, please don’t be surprised if they come crawling back to me. It is not meant as disobedience.”

Chrysoara stopped talking. He closed his eyes momentarily, trying to wrap his mind around what just happened. Did he really just talk to his superior in such a familiar tone? Did he actually just try to explain racism to his superior who had never left the blues or met a Fishman before in her life? That was impossible to one who had not experienced it before.

“As for my line of thought regarding the priests, I don’t know if anyone has snuck in or not though it is one line of information that we can pursue. I was thinking that at least one of us could try to infiltrate their ranks and discover what they know of these disappearances.” Chrysoara opened his eyes and noticed that his pink haired commander had paled. Her face now had a shade of skin somewhere between a ghost and a sheep. “If you don’t like that line of action then we could walk around. I worry that if we reveal ourselves to be marines that we would lose the opportunity to sneak in as neither of us is particularly able to not reveal that we are one of the marines that was walking by recently. Ultimately, it is your decision, Commander.”

He spoke to her pink hair and Chrysoara’s…. well…. Fishmanness, of course.

Scarlett listened to Chrys speak, actually going quiet and for once acting a little mature and serious, her walking just that, no spring in her step, just a normal walk as she listened to the man's words. It took her a moment to comprehend how moronic some of her higher ups were, though she supposed she'd heard of numerous instances of corruption, and those were the ones which hadn't been covered up. The whole organisation was a mess. Sometimes she wondered why she was even a part of it, although she supposed she understood that now she was here, anything other than obeying could lead to her end. And that was the fear of a human, the fears and horrors a Fishman would go through...

"That's fine, I can understand why you would want to. The marines aren't a particularly... Pleasant organisation at the best of times. Some of our superiors are real a-holes. But uh... Yeah, whilst we're here I doubt we'll run into too many other marines, so I guess just let your hair down a bit, or uh, you get the idea"

She wondered how many other figures of speeches didn't work for Fishmen. She had a feeling there were many which she'd accidentally run into, but hopefully Chrys wouldn't take any offense. After all, she had nothing against him, he seemed reliable and if half the things he'd mentioned were true, which she was sure they were, then he'd prove a valuable asset to both the marines and this investigation. Already he was proving knowledgeable by pointing out a few possibilities and ways they could do some research on the topic.

"Hm, I wish that we'd been given more information than this, it'd make this a whole lot easier. I feel like important information about this place is key before we make any bold steps. I wouldn't feel comfortable with either of us walking into a cult blindly after all"

They needed information, although he had a point. The obvious marine attire would make any hopes to infiltrate the priests futile. For her it was easy enough to lose hers, but he was wearing practically the full attire, she doubted either of them would be comfortable with him removing it either. She thought to herself for a moment, plying her jacket from her shoulders and laying it over her arm. Removing her large shouldered jacket did emphasise the size difference between the two though.

It took her a moment to realise that by removing the only proof of her being a marine, she was essentially volunteering to jump into the unknown, when the priests might even be kidnapping via having people join them. That didn't fill her with glee, but, there was still a mystery to be solved and that's what kept her moving forwards. She also wasn't comfortable with sending Chrys into the unknown alone, after all although he was essentially her bodyguard, she was his superior and whilst she hated the marine ranks, she did still feel a level of responsibility about him.
