Account Name: Speedwagon
Basic Character Information Name: Gallow Greene Nickname: Viper Age: 19 Gender: Male Race: Human Affiliation: Marine Rank (Commendations): Chore Boy (0)
Achievements: N/A
Profession:
Assassin
The Assassin profession gives stealth skills, the ability to move silently through areas without being detected. It also gives general poison knowledge. An Assassin generally has little actual combat experience, since their victims don't fight back, and as such don't fare that well in a true fight. Assassins are able to create poisons that debuff, and have access to stealth techniques. Additionally they will be proficient in small weapons such as daggers or blow darts.
Martial Artist
A Martial Artist is someone who specializes in hand-to-hand combat, completely or very close to unarmed. They usually have good insight in the aspects of weight, balance and movement of the body.
Position: Crewman
Physical Appearance Height: 6'0" Weight: 160 lbs Hair: Blonde, windswept, ear length Eyes: Blue Clothing/Accessories: Gallow wears a golden yellow vest over top of a plain white tunic. The vest often has all buttons unbuttoned except for the bottom one, and the tunic has all buttons done up except for the last, top one. For pants, he wears black trousers held up by a green sash acting as a belt. Basic leather boots are worn on his feet, allowing for a happy medium between mobility and protection from the elements and terrain. He wears brown leather gloves to prevent accidental cuts or dirt, and for accessories he has a leather green choker around his neck with a golden coin attached to a chain freely dangling close to the chest.
General Appearance: Gallow is a man of average stature and lean build. As per recommendations from his former mentors, he has kept a strict exercise regimen that stabilizes him at a firm 160 lbs, balanced between muscle and fat. As per those same recommendations, he tries not to build too much muscle to avoid looking like a superhuman brutish muscleman. Trying his best to balance and maintain an "average" build for an adventurer, he sometimes slips up in other places. After posturing and propping up for his duties as a marine day after day, he has developed a habit of slouching when not onboard the ship or engaging in his usual rigmarole. This is often seen as him being lazy, but in truth his back just doesn't allow him as much leniency when it comes to standing up straight all the time.
His left hand has many scars running along it, alongside permanent proof of a burn wound from long ago. As a result, his left hand is less mobile when it comes to bending and less strong when it comes to carrying.

The Character Personality: Gallow is a man best described as carefree. While he does have burdens, goals and responsibilities as any other person would, he tries to live each moment as if it were his last. At first glance, one would most likely mistake him for a rugged bounty hunter or even a pirate given how open to alcohol and celebrating he is when in a tavern.
Considering himself a people's champion of sorts, he takes the time to hear the plights and tragedies of citizens, and likes to try to solve as much injustice as he can before moving on to the next locale at his captain's orders. Aside from a mutual understanding of the poor, he simply believes that the less fortunate are more likely to give their honest opinions without fear, or his true interest: information on key targets he might be after. For what more do the poor have to lose should these villains find out that they were sold out to marines? Their lives? It'd probably be a mercy.
Not to say he doesn't have a number of people within the marines that he thinks would be better off dead, as well. His true allegiance is to his own instincts and moral justice, but for now believes that the government is the lesser evil compared to the overwhelming wave of pirates and other criminals that need to be quelled.
He believes in his former order's code before all else concerning the marines, his own ideals, or anything else.
"Kill the lion. Carve its mane. Wear it, and stand as a new lion with snake's fangs. Pride and poison, brother."
Each member was to find their own meaning of the code, and Gallow took it to mean that talents are meant to be used as their user sees fit. Pride and poison don't mix well typically, but he took it to mean that every craft requires some degree of both brawn and brain respectively, and for an assassin one must appear to be the common man. Be every craft as the situation demands, hide your poison while displaying your pride, but never too much pride. After all, one is only a lion until the pack sees your scales and reveals one as a snake. Lions and snakes are the two types of people in the world, and Gallow's goal is to be both. In that regard, while Gallow is often an instinctual, carefree go-getter, he has the self-awareness to realize when that angle has been pushed too far, and when the "snake" mentality is required.
In that regard, he has the strength of will to push himself into an emotionless state by flicking a mental switch where the only thing that matters is his target. Often this comes out when conflict is unavoidable or a battle becomes long and drawn out.

The Jealous
Gallow was born in Alabasta, raised at an orphanage in Nanohana. He had no knowledge of his parents, and so relied on the company of caretakers and other orphans for his mental and emotional development. From a young age he was a bully of sorts, having a knack for beating on smaller kids when they had something he wanted or was jealous of them for having. He became quickly known around the orphanage as the "little tyrant" and was locked in his room much more often then he was ever allowed outside. This attitude only grew worse by the years when children he knew began leaving one by one, whether by becoming old enough to live alone or by being picked by generous families.
Gallow stayed, however. Not by choice, but because he was too young to adventure alone and too much of a problem child to even be glanced at by potential families. As years went on he secretly found himself wanting to stop and change his attitude, but snuffed those thoughts out. "It's too late for that, they already hate me.", he would say to himself, alone in the silence of his bedroom at night.
On his twelfth birthday, the head caretaker took a cake up to his room and scoffed as she walked away. Turning around before leaving, however, she looked Gallow in the one more time and held up a single index finger. One. He had one year left to either be picked up by somebody or be left on the streets by himself. His very essence shattered at the realization. His pride, however, left him unable to even act as if he liked anyone around him. Not even for the sake of a home. For happiness. The world had already decided on his life, after all: that of an orphan dying of starvation or thirst or some sort of venom out in the sands.
His violence escalated, until it came to a boiling point one day when he jabbed a stick into another orphan's eye, rendering him blind in that eye. From that day onward until the day before his thirteenth birthday, he was prohibited from interaction with the other kids by being locked in his room during designated outside hours.
He received a knock on his door later that evening, however. An adult had arrived specifically requesting him. Entering his room was a hulking ogre of a man, his body's soft lavender scent radiating around the room and allowing the entire orphanage to smell like Nanohana's finest perfume. Many rings, golden bracelets and necklaces adorned his body, and carried with him some sort of staff strung up with wind chimes tied at the tip that jangled when he moved. His head was shaven clean, with heavy eyebrows and a small beard braided with golden ringlets. Whoever he was, he was rich by some means.
"This is Mr. Ugo. Founder of Ugo Perfumes, down the street. He heard of your... attitude, and offered to take you as an employee and resident.", the head caretaker spoke, introducing the rich perfume shop owner.
The two sat alone in Gallow's room, making small talk. The boy's usually unpleasant attitude and sharp remarks did nothing to offend Ugo or make him so much as raise an eyebrow. He simply laughed along, seeing the angry orphan's comments about the staff and kids as cynical jokes from somebody who understood nothing about the world.
Gallow expressed his disinterest in being a perfume shop employee, stating that he couldn't handle the smell even from a distance. "I gotta have some persuasion here, see?" he claimed, raising a hand and gesturing for money.
Ugo stood up and straightened out, towering many feet over the boy, and raised out a hand mere centimeters from Gallow's face, palm facing the ceiling.
"I'll give you something better than money. Come with me and you'll learn about the other side of Anohana, boy."
With that statement and a snap of the fingers, Ugo's palm was on fire. It wasn't an illusion or a trick, Gallow saw a man create fire from nothing.
Ugo began walking out of the room, and didn't need to say anything else to get Gallow to follow.
The Flame
Upon stepping into Ugo's perfume shop expecting an immediate fire show, he was instead dragged through a lengthy process by many individuals he didn't care to know the names of, about how to manage the shop, handle money, greet customers, stock shelves, and all sorts of other things he didn't care about. He wanted to make fire!
When he expressed such a concern to Ugo, he was handed sticks and a rock. "Go make fire," he said, smiling arrogantly.
Trying to do his usual bit of storming away angrily, Ugo pulled him back just as Gallow was to step out the door. He wasn't done stocking shelves, and Ugo made sure to drill it home by reciting the entire tutorial from the beginning.
By the time Gallow's first night hit, he was already exhausted. He lay there in his bed, an attic above the shop, thinking of his new life here. More importantly, about how to weasel the fire trick out of Ugo. Alas, fatigue overtook him, and he fell asleep.
Waking up to a shock, he realized that he was in a different location than where he fell asleep. Being dragged along by chains and with ripped garb covering his mouth, he could only see a night sky above and feel cool, damp sand beneath him.
Eventually he was tossed onto some sort of circular stage. His chains were cut and the garb around his mouth removed. He tried to quickly get up and lunge at whoever was carrying him, but found himself winded by a knee to the gut. Collapsing slowly, he saw Ugo walking off the stage. He clapped his hands, and as Gallow stood up he saw various dunes, plants and rock formations in the vicinity disappear, and in their places were people. They approached in ragged garb, faces covered by masks of varying animals and insects, and stopped just outside the stage where Ugo raised his hand to signify silence.
"I bring to you today a new arrival! Some say a troublemaker of the local orphanage. I say a poison in need of a bit of refining."
The individuals simultaneously pulled out paired knives, clanging the flats together in agreement. Ugo brought a box out onto the stage, and opened it on the opposite end of Gallow. He opened the lid and looked Gallow in the eye.
"Fight or run. It's your choice."
Out of the box came a slithering red rattlesnake, fully grown and hungry. Sliding to just underneath Gallow's feet was a stick and rock. The words, "make fire" remained in the back of his mind. He quickly tried to sit down and start a fire desperately, hoping that it would perhaps scare off the snake. Due to panic however, he couldn't even hope to ignite a spark. Before he realized it, the snake was in front of him, lunging.
He barely managed to avoid being bitten in the neck, rolling out of the way as his foot got caught on the snake's tail end. Coiling around his leg as he hobbled hastily towards the edge of the stage, he could feel it winding up for a bite without even looking back.
In a panic, he reached with his left hand to smack the snake away - but alas, he was only met with a dodge and a swift bite to the hand. The pain alone was enough to send him unconscious in under a minute.
When he awoke, he was in his attic room, his hand bandaged and Ugo leaning over his bedside.
He immediately came to panic, but was quickly reassured that Ugo was not here to harm him. He explained that the perfume shop was merely a cover.
"Some still believe in the rebellion, and in spite of everything, the rebellion's remnants are closer to the king than he'd like to believe."
They were a group of assassins and hired mercenaries, banded together after the failed rebellion a decade prior, carrying out missions under the organization name of "Scarab". They still seek the king's head, even as they drop in numbers by the day. To recruit, they take people who have nothing and build them into new Scarabs. Ugo's Perfume is but one of many fronts used to hide their kind in plain sight.
Ugo had to confirm whether Gallow still had something to live for, so dearly that he feared for his own life so desperately; and indeed he did judging by the panic against the snake. He had to reaffirm whether Gallow had the mettle for it, and thus began the boy's training.
The Viper
Day after day he would study combat and poison in equal measures. He had to catch up for all the years he went uneducated, after all.
"You're trying to be a lion when you've naturally always been a snake." Ugo spoke. "Don't be a lion. Being brave will get a snake killed. Throw dust in the lion's eyes, trip them, bite at them, but never fight on their terms."
Balancing his duties as the new hire of a humble perfume shop in Nanohana with his nightly research of the human body and psychology, he was being broken down and rebuilt into exactly what the Scarabs looked for.
It took an entire three years before he was allowed to once more challenge the snake. This time he didn't need to be whisked away in his sleep, he went fully aware of the situation.
As before, he was handed the fire-making tools. This time, however, he kicked them off the stage and began to walk towards the snake, stopping just outside its lunging range. They locked eyes as boy and beast, Gallow shooting off a merciless glare to the best of his ability with his ocean blue eyes. The snake rose, showing its fangs and moving closer. Yet still, the boy stayed still, glaring. At the height of tension, the snake slunk back down and slithered away into the sands, off of the stage. Spectators clanged their knives in acceptance. Ugo stepped onto the stage.
"Your approach was different. Care to explain?"
Gallow nodded. "I was the lion. The snake tried to face me in the open, no tricks or deception or the element of surprise. No advantage given by fear. I was no more capable at fighting it than before, but I didn't back away. A snake's tricks don't often work on the same lion twice."
"And you claim yourself a lion?"
"No. But a snake impersonating a lion is the most fearsome kind of snake there is. Pride and poison. False confidence is real if others believe it is."
Ugo smirked, and had another figure bring out a small chest at a snap of his fingers, setting it at his feet.
"We had this prepared for you upon completion of the trial. You've passed, new brother. However, we require one further step to prove your conviction to our brotherhood. Have you anything personal to give?"
Pondering for a moment, Gallow's face became solemn but realized what he had to do. If not for the order, then for himself. He grabbed the stick and rock, and moved closer to Ugo, kneeling with both.
"When you first took me in, it was out of desire to see your fire trick again and learn it. I've since realized I need to learn my own tricks. I was arrogant. And so, I'll burn away the old, arrogant flesh I once used to cause harm to so many weaker than me."
He got to work making fire - not any kind of supernatural fire, but a fire made the same way his ancestors made it.
With a long breath, he held out his left hand.
"With this hand, I will never again harm without reason. More so, I'll burn my old self away."
As quick as a viper, he lunged his left hand into the flames, allowing it to stay within, engulfing the hand. Once Ugo nodded his head in approval, Gallow removed it from the flames and plunged it into the sand to cool it. Charred flesh, scars and some clearly permanent burn marks remained. He wanted to scream in pain so badly, but bit down on his lip to quell it the best he could.
"It is done, then." Ugo spoke.
Kicking open the chest, a small fruit was revealed.
"You've accepted your shortcomings and closed off a part of you. Thus, a new part has been open in turn. Eat it, and become someone else. Someone better. Pride and poison, brother."
He would later discover that he ate the Spin Spin Fruit, and though warned of the dangers of water around him, accepted the new assassination possibilities it opened up for him.
He spent more years training with the Scarabs as an official member, though only creating and supplying poison rather than actively killing.
At the age of 18 he was given a task by Ugo. He was told to take his talents and refine them on his own in the Blues. Infiltrate the marines, become one of them, discover their current manpower and influence. Refine skills and talents on the many expendable criminals of the world, gain some popularity, and rejoin the Scarabs when the time is right.
Gallow's objectives made clear, he was given a new identity. His old name didn't matter, he was now Gallow Greene of the marines!
Currently he's in the process of being assigned his first ship serving janitorial duty.
Abilities and Possessions Combat: Gallow prefers the fight that doesn't exist in the first place. Whether that mean taking his enemy out before they know they were being attacked or avoiding conflict through retreat or negotiation, he doesn't like playing the same game as the bigger, tougher combatants out there. He could be seen as cowardly or a pacifist for this approach, but he sees it as being smart.
If forced, he'll use any kind of dirty trick to get the upper hand, including but not limited to poison and hitting vulnerable areas. He prefers to be less aggressive and more calculating, relying on cunning, reactions and instinct to dodge and parry away while looking for an opening.
When his daggers and darts fail, he'll sheath them and rely on his martial arts which has a kickboxing style combined with the targeting of pressure points and enhancing his lethality with the Spin Spin Fruit's added spinning abilities.
