Just keep looking ahead Gary. Drink your tea and look ahead. His mother had told him about places like these, weird countries with strange people, she always said "You're already a big enough freak Gary without catching more freakishness off other sods, just ignore them" So ignore them he did. He stared down at his coffee, sat on a bench too small with his knees touching his chest. His back ached from contorting his body onto the seat and his mouth burned a little from the much too hot coffee he had bought from the machine. He took another swig and grimaced at the heat, his tongue stung. Ouch. At least the people were avoiding him, which made his task of avoiding them much easier. Some would grimace as they walked past, others would step out of the way like he had just defecated on the spot. One guy even spat in his direction. He chuckled at that, fond memories of the games his brothers would play with him flooded in his mind. Brotherly love, the purest form of love. Oh crap, a man was walking towards him. Gary froze like a possum, his coffee held in front of his mask, halfway towards pouring it down his throat. What does he want? Oh crap, oh crap, what if he wants some freaky things from me? Flashbacks to his mothers wise words flooded Gary's head "Freaks want one thing Gary. Sex. And they will take it either way, mark my words. even off your ugly face. If one approaches you just tell him to have his way and be done with it" Gary nodded, your right mother, I've got to face this man. "You okay there, sir?" Gary jumped as the man stared up at him and smiled. It was sinister Gary knew. What did he want to do with Gary? He could barely hold his body from shaking at the thoughts that ran into his mind. "Sir?" Gary nodded shakily inside his helmet. The man stared at the mask that stayed unmoving, staring blankly at him. His eyes searching for Gary sweet eyes as he gave a lecherous frown. Oh god, say something Gary, quick. "Y-you c-c-can ha-have m-y b-b-body" Gary whimpered. The old man took a double take, shocked by what he heard "What?" Why was the stranger so confused by his offer? Was it because he didn't hear what Gary said? "M-my b-body... Y-you can have m-my body sir, i-if it please?" He called out louder. Surely he heard this time? The man, to his confusion, looked even more taken aback. Was this man really one of the freaks his mom told him about? He was certain he was. "I dont want you body! I work here. I was asking if you needed any help because you kind of looked lost sat on your own here" Oh thank the lord. Gary let out a sigh of relief as the shakes of relief dissipated throughout his body. He shakily placed his cup down as he spoke "Thank you sir" He must've been mistaken about the man, not a freak, just a bit strange is all. Although his mother did say "Strange people are everywhere. Who knows what they want" so he prepared himself for the heinousness that could arrive from this stranger. "Do you have any questions then?" The man looked pleasent enough and claimed he worked for this building, whatever this building was. Gary could only assume he was a good guy, perhaps even a friend? he dropped his shoulders as he relaxed around his new found friend. He looked around at his surroundings, the men andwomen who walked past and the building. On observation, it was like being in an audition room for the next great boyband. Everything was witewashed and all the people wore white clothing. If Gary was a cynical man, he may even of said perhaps a little racist? No black colours? seemed a bit off to him. "Whats up with the...uh... Clothing?" The old man chuckled, he seemed almost expectant of Garys question. Seemed suspicious. "A long time a go,something happened to this island and turned everything a white primer" Gary nodded along, even though the story was boring. Friends like it when you do that for them. Makes them seem more interesting and they like you more because of it. "Now, everything is White. The downside for you, is Beli has no worth on this island. The upside is, colour has lots of worth. If you have lots of colorful clothing, you can make a fortune on this island" Gary looked down at his white underwear, the only clothes he had. Seemed likemother was right, even on an island where money is worthless, Gary was poor. Wait, he had his brown Helmet. That was good for trade "I have this helmet to trade?" The old man shook his head. A sure sign that Gary was about to receive bad news. "Im sorry but mud colours like brown, grey and black are almost as worthless as white around here" Gary thought so, racists. He looked around at his grey iron baseball bat, then at his brown guitar in his black case. Well, this island was a waste of time. He wanted to leave, walk away and find a proper island to gain money on but he couldnt. There was one thing from stopping him from walking away. He didnt know how to end this conversation. What was he to do? Say bye and just leave? That seemed rude. Just leave without saying anything? Even ruder. He didnt want to hurt the old mans feelings after he was kind enough to help him out. Plus, the guy had a kind smile. There was onlyone thing for it. Sit in silence and wait for the man to act. So that is what Gary did, he sat and twiddled his fingers as the man stared at him. After what seemed like an hour (More like 5 minutes) the man broke the unbearably awkward silence. "....Y-you can buy stuff with beli at the front desk" Gary sighed a breath of relief. Thank god for that. "Yes sir, lead the way" The old man nodded, slightly perturbed but obediant to his duty. He motioned Gary to follow him as he walked back to his desk. Gary smiled, and gotup, his too long legs awkward and gangly as he struggled to get out from the benches grip. After he freed himself he followed the old man thinking to himself 'well that went well'. Maybe things would be good today. |

Supply and Demand were the basics of economics. One could charge more for things that were in demand but having more of something than was wanted made it harder to sell at a high price. Gesso Island seemed to embody this concept down to it's very core. An unavoidable lack of supply in something as taken for granted as color leading to a high, high demand. If Kanon had known that this island would be her first stop in the Grand Line then she would have stocked up on some colorful wares, but sadly it seemed like her run of bad luck when it came to her business plans was continuing. The next question was: Could she figure out some way to turn a profit here before moving on to the next island? Moving into the Grand Line might have been a good way to distance herself from the potential risks of the people that forced her from her family's business but it was beginning to seem like she should have prepared a bit more. Well, risks were just part of the business so she wasn't going to get anywhere worrying about not being prepared enough. Making her way into town from the dock she spotted the Visitor Center and approached it, beginning to talk with the person running it to get a good idea of the goings on locally. It was clear now but the regular color-draining rain would be around, well, regularly on it's consistent schedule. If she was going to do anything to make money here she would need to take advantage of that. The demand for color was bound to be at it's highest right after the rain cleared, when the color was freshly removed and people would be eager to replace it. If she was going to strike that would be the best time. |

Upon further inspection it seemed that, while potentially profitable, attempting to play the color market seemed like it would be a long and arduous process with a good risk of failing. Perhaps if Kanon managed to have more capital to risk it might be worth it but as she was still trying to get things together it was becoming increasingly obvious that this plan might be something left for some other time where she could prepare more. For now she needed to keep her head, and the color on it and the rest of her, low while she waited for her Log Pose to update so she could leave. Oh well. Her chance at profit would come along someday. |
